Hello friends, you would have noticed that things have gone quiet recently for Training Ahead, and this is the reason why: we have ceased our activities completely in Austria as Paco Villalvilla has now been employed on permanent basis by Guide Dogs UK. Three years after leaving Scotland, Paco goes back to the organisation where everything started back in the year 2001. We would like to thank all our clients in Europe for the trust they put on us in the last three years.

Photo is showing Paco standing outside the Forfar Guide Dog School with the Guide Dog sign behind Paco.

Blast from the past... I can't believe it has been 7 years since this was recorded. A great video about the story of my friend Leigh, his guide dog William and how we worked together.

We follow the inspirational story of Leigh Davis, a partially sighted man who was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 17.

Off-the-leash obedience with Felino the Barbet

We went to our local hardware store to do some obedience with Felino. Off-the-leash obedience will be assessed at the Austrian official exams for assistance dogs, so it’s important that we work on this.

The video starts with Felino lying down next to me on the lead. With the command “sit”, Felino sits up and walks next to me. Felino then gets unleashed and is commanded to walk to heel again. Eventually I ask him to make contact with me by putting his paw on my leg. This behaviour can be used as “anxiety alert” and would help a future owner to focus on the dog and to calm down. The video ends with Felino heeling again and going in a down position on command, with me walking away from him. How do you think Felino did?

Practising with the family

In order to prepare Felino for his future role as an assistance dog, we took the opportunity to take a walk with Sebi who uses a super cool special pram to get out and about. Sebi is a one-in-a-million boy who likes to say hello and give high fives to anyone passing by. Mr Felino walked like a pro next to us.

Photo shows Paco (pre-lockdown) with his nephew Sebi who is one of around 100 known cases of Snyder-Robinson Syndrome in the world. Felino looks up to Paco who is pushing Sebi's pram.

Back from a successful visit to Poland invited by the Polish Blind Association Polski Związek Niewidomych Instytut Tyflologiczny, to present a seminar to the three main guide dog foundations in Poland: Fundacja na rzecz Osób Niewidomych Labrador-Pies Przewodnik, Fundacja Pies Przewodnik and Fundacja Vis Maior. The two-day seminar was specifically aimed at helping them improve the training of guide dog staff and unify standards across the country. Like in many other countries with small schools, these Polish foundations don’t have any full time staff, everybody has their own day job so they dedicate their spare time (and some family time too I’m sure) to training guide dogs and their clients. Hats off to them! It’s been a pleasure to get to know you all and I hope to see you again soon!

Are whistles good for recall? The short answer is yes! The sound of the whistle travels far and is very unique and consistent (whistles don't have bad days or lose their voice like we do!). It can easily be transferred to another handler, regardless of the handler's tone of voice or ability to shout loudly if the dog goes far away. Creating a strong pairing between food and whistle and slowly increasing the level of distraction normally leads to strong comebacks. One just needs to be careful not to misplace the whistle, so our advice is to have more than one – for example on your key ring or on the zip of your jacket!

Video shows Yoshi and Zuri, our training dogs from Independence Dogs Austria, free running together on a grassy field with a backdrop of mountains and trees. They quickly turn around when the whistle is blown, running back to Paco's hand to be rewarded.

Third episode of the Assistance Dog Café with our colleague Ken Brydon. Ken started his career as an Apprentice GDMI at Guide Dogs UK in the late 1970s. Compulsory living-in for staff members at the training centre, an on-site bar, and 18 dogs in a van…

A big welcome to Zuri and Yoshi!

We are very excited to announce a new professional collaboration, this time with Independence Dogs Austria, who have put their trust in us to turn these guys into guide dogs for the blind. The two beautiful siblings belong to the gundog group… and that’s how much we are going to say… Can you guess the breed? Extra brownie points if you can also guess the country of origin of the breed.

A well trained guide dog should be able to compensate when its owner is not following adequately. In this video you can see how Light into Europe guide dog Chilli puts up with very poor following while he was in training with us in Austria. Despite making him work hard, Chilli still gets to the upkerb with a wagging tail.

We recently received the sad news of the passing of retired Guide Dog William (a.k.a. Will.I.Am) A Flat Coat X Golden Retriever full of character who guided my friend Leigh all over Edinburgh. William was Leigh’s first guide dog and a real life changer for him. Thanks to William, Leigh went from being stuck at home, to do daily 6 miles walks and even get back to employment. Run free Will.I.Am… you were a great dog.

Last month we said "Happy Retirement" to one special dog. William (a.k.a. Will.I.Am.) who hung up the harness after working along side his owner Leigh for many years. William was Leigh's first dog and I had the pleasure to match and train them together. Sometime after they qualified, Leigh joined Guide Dogs, so I had them both working in our office everyday.

The office ain't going to be the same without you Mr. Will.I.Am.

Have a great time running wild and rolling in all the stuff you can find!

Do you know what Off Kerb Obstacles are?
An Off Kerb Obstacle (OKO) is when an obstacle blocks the pavement forcing a guide dog team to get off the pavement onto the road, and return back to the pavement to keep travelling in the original direction.

In this video you can see me with my Training Ahead hoodie, doing an OKO training session with black Labrador Charlie, a guide dog in training from Light into Europe. Walking along the pavement with the road on the left, we approach two different OKOs. In this session, I encourage Charlie to make the wrong decision by asking him to walk into the obstacle. Even after he has positively taken me to the side kerb, which is his way of telling me that we cannot continue on the pavement, I re-direct Charlie towards the obstacle, but he insists on returning to the side kerb. From the side kerb we step onto the road to quickly return to the pavement after passing the obstacle. The video shows the approach to the obstacles from different angles. Charlie’s tails is wagging throughout despite having to work really hard to keep me on the right track!
