Snuppy (short for 'Seoul National University puppy') was born on April 24, 2005, in South Korea.
The scientists used a technique called 'somatic cell nuclear transfer', which involves taking the nucleus of a donor cell (in this case, from an adult male Afghan Hound) and inserting it into an egg cell from which the nucleus had been removed. This egg was then implanted into a surrogate mother dog.
From 1,095 embryos implanted, only three pregnancies occurred, and just one pup survived—Snuppy.
Snuppy lived a fairly healthy life, dying of cancer at age 10 in 2015, which is an average lifespan for his breed. In 2017, scientists cloned Snuppy himself, producing four healthy puppies—a kind of “clone of a clone.”
If you could bring back a beloved dog through cloning, would you do it—or does it feel unnatural?
