Snail varnish 🐌

We have been preparing over 2,500 extremely rare Partula snails to be released into the wild in French Polynesia! Before making the 15,000km journey, each snail is marked with a dot of UV paint meaning they will glow under UV torchlight, helping conservationists monitor them in the wild at night when they’re most active 🌙

Our wildlife conservation charity the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has been part of a collaborative initiative (including ZSL, Marwell Wildlife and Bristol Zoo Project) helping to bring the species back from the brink for over 40 years 💛

We were DELIGHTED to welcome illustrator Axel Scheffler to the zoo to meet Jonty the gentoo penguin chick, who was named in celebration of Axel’s brand new picture book with author Julia Donaldson, Jonty Gentoo: The Adventures of a Penguin 🐧📚

Axel pitched in and helped keeper Lorna feed some penguins, and even did a sketch of Jonty too!

Meet the Magic Forest’s new residents… 🌿✨

Prevost’s squirrels, also known as Asian tri-colour squirrels, are native to the lowland forests and gardens of Southeast Asia. Their genus name ‘callosciurus’ means ‘beautiful squirrel’ 🐿️ 💛

Even though a giraffe's neck can can be up to eight feet long and weigh almost 300kg, they only have seven neck bones - the same as us!

Their long neck allows them to eat leaves high in the tree tops, decreasing competition for food between them and other herbivores 🌿🦒

Cleo has been put on some new medication, so we’ve closed her habitat for a few days while our charity's expert vets keep a close eye on her.

We'll let you know when you can spot her again 💛
