The law for all XL bully dogs to be muzzled when out in public comes into place by 31st of December. Certification of ownership will be mandatory by February 2024.
To be successful with muzzle training, you want to aim for consent from your dog. Start with a game - use an empty, clean plant pot with treats in the bottom which helps get your dog used to putting their head into a novel space, covering the snout. Use an agility cone too if you have one, dropping the treats through the holes. Then place treats in a basket muzzle, (best for dogs with a broad snout/face) and let the dog repeat the exercise of putting their head in, and after daily repetitions of 10-30 seconds...increasing to 1, 2 then 3 + minute positive reinforcements over the course of 3 weeks, transition to slipping the muzzle on with food sitting in the gaps. Try without strap first, then with straps fastened. There should be good clearance on the muzzle for the dog to breathe and tongue to loll and enough room to feed treats through the gaps. Short trials at first, using food to reinforce. After 3 weeks you can build up the time they have it on which will become as routine as their lead being clipped on.
Muzzle training is useful for vet and groomer visits regardless of breed.🐾🐾

Do not wait until the night of the fireworks to prep your dog - play very low volume fireworks for 5 mins a day (spotify), then build up to 30 mins on slightly louder volume (but not too loud) for 4 days before.🎆🐾 use a 'white noise' recording on actual firework night so it mutes the real thing a little. 👌🐾

Happy Spooky Season! 👻
Remember, if you are having visits from ghosts, witches and creatures of the night - these can be potentially scary for dogs. So in order to enjoy the trick or treaters (or not) be sure to:
*Indicate to them with a sign to not ring the bell if your dog gets a bit up a height at the sound.
*Any parties, keep your dogs in a quiet space with some low volume background music such as wild life download, classical music, or the radio.
*Do not let dogs anywhere near sweets, chocolate, candles , or lanterns.
*Remember to do their comfort break before nightfall.
*Do have some of their dog treats ready to reward good behaviour and ensure they have fresh-water available.
*It's fair to have someone present in the house to answer the door whilst the dog/s stay on their boundary with a chew or a lick mat to enjoy - licking releases endorphins in the brain to help keep your dog happy. .

Recall distances and avoiding predictors are this weeks update from Northern Zen Dogs 🙌🐾

These are safe distances for your dog being off lead and able to recall. Ideally you want them hanging out near you at 5 or 10 metres, however some dogs will circle you from a 20 metre distance quite well, enjoying sniffs and niffs and peeing AND will recall 😆. Beyond that loses some control. Mix up your walk and change direction to engage them to break their predictors. 🐾

Household manners and what are termed 'Threshold Behaviours' are key to a harmonious household with your dog. Your dog learning: sit, down, wait or stay and how to enjoy time on a boundary or crate will boost the bond you have with them. Waiting for you to go over a threshold into another room or outside and returning to the house are good impulse control behaviours and they become good habits. ✔️😍🐾

Begging at the table is a learned behaviour by dogs, reinforced by humans. Rather than creating an 'Extinction Explosion' of massive frustration by stopping immediately, try phasing it out. Gradually reduce the value of the food, and make it intermittent with tinier amounts before stopping altogether. Remember the reaction may be worse for a while before becoming extinct however better than cold turkey (I think thats a pun)🤩. Stay strong 😊🐾💪Use their daily food allowance always for training away from the human table - you'll see great results!😊

Our weekly update from Northern Zen Dogs: Dog Hu***ng, what causes it and what to do about it 🐶:

Dog hu***ng is not a dominance trait nor is it the outdated alpha myth (the only alpha examples in wild dogs are the parents of a pack).
The cause of hu***ng is rooted in anxiety and lack of confidence in a dog. Neutering a male dog too early locks in the anxiety and they do not develop coping strategies compared to dogs allowed to be intact until around 4 yrs of age (Mitchell, T.; 2023). The best solution? Work on your dog's confidence and calmness with specific games and active rest with a tool called the 'Calmness Triad'.☯️

'Pica' is a behaviour that occurs in humans (especially in pregnancy when the sufferer has a desire to eat strange things such as coal or toothpaste). Dogs get it too. Eating p**p, soil and rocks etc. It could require a tweak in diet or it could be down to boredom or anxiety behaviour. This behaviour is very receptive to brain reshaping. 🧠👍🐾
