It’s pouring with rain outside. Since there’s no garden or bee pictures to take, we thought we’d share a photo of our cat fast asleep on the sofa. Seems like the best way to deal with the relentless rain today.

All the gear and no idea? Doing a few wood work projects today for our Bantams. New roosting bars and some enrichment frames. Not a bad view, even if it goes wrong.

Back to doing what we love. Having a look at our bees! When you have beautiful, sunny, warm, still weather conditions the bees rarely take any notice of our intrusion. Today conditions are perfect and it is great to see healthy hives, with lots of brood (have a look at the top right hand corner of photo 1, as it shows lovely plumb larvae developing before its cell is capped.

The sun is back! After a 2 month absence the orchard has sunlight again. Still low in the sky, this was taken at lunchtime. Tommy the Turkey joined us for a wander too.

S.o.u.r.d.o.u.g.h. Six days in the making, but a really delicious bread. Six days ago I mixed 60g of organic wholemeal bread flour with 60ml of warm water in a jar, took the jar for a little walk and hoped to catch some wild yeast! Since then it’s been feeding the ‘starter’ with equal amounts of flour and water each day, adding nothing else. Today, baked this loaf to see if indeed the starter is alive. Well ‘proof is in the prove’. Haven’t been this excited about baking bread for a while. Safe to say I’m now a sourdough baking fan. It’s really tasty too!.

We had our last craft fair of the year yesterday. Winter hibernation time now!

Delighted to be exhibiting with three super talented Moray Artists .mackenzie.716 and Lisa Colwell. We will be up on The Mezzanine at Threaplands Garden Centre, Elgin From the 22nd until the 29th October. Opening gathering from 2-4pm on Sunday 22nd.

A marrow 😂 makes the 1.3kg of tomatoes and a 1kg squash look small.

Windfall and any fruit on the apple trees with damaged skin picked today. Going to try to make our first Cider.

It’s Apple squashing day with windfall apples to make juice. Heating at roughly 72 degrees for 20 minutes then it’ll keep for a couple of years (in theory!)

But a question to the Apple fans! What is this Apple? We have identified most of the apple trees we have and thought this was a Discovery (it’s an eater) but seems way too red inside for that. Ideas?

We often leave a lot of our honey for the bees, or eat it ourselves 😁🍯
This year, we have a small amount excess which we’re selling tomorrow

Honey extraction time for us (and the bees). Exciting to try the honey as each season tastes slightly different. Our bees were a large part of our move so it’s nice to spend some time appreciating what they do for us.
Here is a frame partially capped. When the honey is ready, the bees will cap it. At this point the honey will be at 20% or below moisture. You can test honey by using a refractometer. Ours is at 18% this year which is perfect 🍯🐝

Look at this beauty. It's apple season and having quite a few trees, our preserving game needs to be on point! As well as eating lots of crumble we're going to freeze some, make some apple chutney, juice some, and give cider a go for the first time.

It’s time to find new homes for our rare breed Blue Slate Turkey poults. They’re 12 weeks old. 3 males (probably) and a female.
Lovely birds that’ll make great pets and unlike Chickens, don’t trash your garden! Super inquisitive and make really funny noises.
