Just sitting here thinking about our role as a small farm in the big picture of this country.
It has just dawned on me and hopefully quite a few of you, that food in the United Kingdom is mostly produced by small farms like ours.
While walking the cattle shed I realised we produce 500kg of British Beef every day of the year. That is a whopping 2000 steaks EVERYDAY!
Then as I checked the sheep fields the thought of producing 18 tons of lamb EVERY YEAR!! That equates to 49kg EVERYDAY which is nearly 250 lamb chops.
As I visit the poultry house I just saw protein in the form of an egg, to be precise nearly 110,000 EVERY YEAR!!!
Then we think about Christmas and the 500 turkeys produced to make sure our local communities have the chance to eat proper poultry and not the chlorinated sort that could begin to arrive on our shores with the loss of our British Family Farms.
After all the farming related activities I went on to the government's dream of environmental enhancement on farm. Hang on they do not realise how entwined both are and have always been but hey ho, we as British Farmers do not care about the countryside that we live and work in. So here's away with our environmental commitments of planting an additional 1km of hedgerow, sowing 100 acres to GS4 herbal ley mix to help our farmland birds. As well as our 7 ponds to give space for the wild waterfowl along with over 20 acres of woodland to help squirrels, birds and deer with cover from the outside world.
Yes Starmer as farmers we take care of the livestock, the farm, the wildlife, the countryside. We are custodians of the British countryside and we like to think that we are a big part of Great Britain creating the backbone of Britain protecting food security and in turn you should be proud to have us not neglecting the fact of national security.
As a small farmer in a great big country I am proud of our achievement to support the British public with wholesome, high welfare food that is produced in a environmentally enhanced farm to benefit everyone and everything.
Let's think wisely as this picture could be somewhat different in just a few years.
