Please be mindful of your pets in the hot weather!
Dogs can die of heatstroke, and can go downhill quite rapidly.

❌ Do not walk your dogs until later in the evening or first thing in the morning when it’s cooler - they will not die from missing out on a walk!
❌ Ensure plenty of fresh water available at all times.
❌ Do not leave your dog in the car!
❌ Ensure plenty of shade and indoor time.
❌ Be mindful of hot conservatory’s.
❌ Be aware that Astro turf is a lot hotter than normal ground.

If you are concerned about your pet at any point due to the heat, this can be an emergency! Call us on 01353 658333.

🪰 FLY STRIKE 🪰

Fly strike is a serious condition in rabbits. It occurs mostly in the summer months and can be potentially fatal.

Fly strike is caused by flies that are attracted to damp fur, urine, faeces and the odour of the rabbits scent. Flies will usually land on the rabbits rear end and lay their eggs. Within a short time, the eggs will hatch into maggots. The maggots then start to feed on the rabbit!

How to prevent fly strike:
- check your rabbit frequently (ideally twice daily)
- groom and clean your rabbit if they cannot do this themselves especially checking their rear end
- provide a clean environment for your rabbit to live in
- ensure there are no open wounds

Even though fly strike is most common in rabbits, cats, dogs and other animals are vulnerable to this too!

BLUE-GREEN ALGAE POISONING!

Be aware of blue-green algae poisoning in dogs. It looks like 'pea soup' scum that floats on the water but it is actually bacteria.

It can be deadly if dogs lick or drink any of it. Wild animals will be affected too, so if you‘re out near water and you see dead animals (even fish or birds) don’t let your dog in the water!

Signs to look out for:
- vomiting and diarrhoea
- pale or yellow (jaundice) gums
- breathing difficulties

These toxins can cause:
- liver damage/possible liver failure
- muscle tremors
- seizures

We advise to always rinse your dog off with fresh water after swimming. If you suspect your dog has been effected then please do give us a call on 01353 658333.

Why do puppies need vaccines?!

Regular vaccinations protect our pets from major life threatening diseases. The four main diseases we vaccinate against are:

Distemper virus - attacks several body systems and can be fatal.
Hepatitis virus - effects liver, kidneys, eyes and lungs.
Leptospirosis bacteria - transmitted by infected urine or contaminated water sources. This is a zoonotic disease which means it can be passed between animals and humans.
Parvovirus - highly contagious virus. It can be fatal and most common in puppies.

We can also vaccinate against Bordetella (kennel cough) which is a highly infectious between dogs that socialise in any environment.

If you need any further information about vaccinations then please contact us on 01353 658333.

Today is... Fresh breath day!

Have you thought about your pets teeth?

Your pet’s teeth are just as important as yours. Tooth brushing is the number one way of ensuring minimisation of gum and dental disease. Feeding biscuits and bones can encourage your pets to chew therefore aiding the removal of plaque and tartar.

Check your pet’s teeth regularly. Dental disease is extremely painful, and the presence of infection in the mouth can put pressure on other bodily systems through passage of harmful bacteria. Treatment is better than cure! Dental treatment in animals must be done under general anaesthesia, which is completely avoidable if good dental hygiene is achieved throughout your pets life.

If you’re worried about your pets teeth, and would like a check up, please call the practice on 01353 658333 to book an appointment.

Just a reminder to check your dogs/cats nails frequently to prevent any curling and imbedding in to their pads! 😬

Nails imbedding in pads is extremely uncomfortable and painful for your pet and could results in infections. It also reduces their ability to grip when walking and may alter their gait.

We find this occurs more frequently in senior pets as they are usually unable to exercise as often compared to when they were younger.

Please check your pets feet on a regular basis regardless of age to prevent this from happening. If you are concerned or need some advice please give us a call on 01353 658333 and book in to see one of our nurses, who are more than happy to help with your concerns.

ITS GRASS SEED SEASON! 🌾
This time of year we start to see cases of these pesky little monsters commonly getting stuck in dogs ears, noses, and feet.
🌾Grass seeds can cause an awful lot of damage, and once they imbed under the skin they typically continue to track deeper and deeper into the tissue. This is because they are barbed, not allowing them to travel back the way they came.
🌾In worst cases they have been found in the lungs and even the brain.
🌾Look out for red swelling in between your dogs toes, snorting/snuffling, and constant head shaking.
🌾 Commonly occurs in spaniel type breeds due to their long hairy ears and furry feet, but grass seeds can effect any dog breed.
🌾Always check your dogs over after a walk and pick out any seeds from their fur. Where possible avoid walking them in places where there is an abundance of grass seeds.
🌾If you suspect your dog is effected, give us a call ASAP so that we can check them over, as intervention is required sooner rather than later to prevent the seeds from tracking too far. 01353 658333.

☀️ BBQ SEASON HAZARDS ☀️

Now that BBQ season is getting closer there are a few hazards that can cause your pets serious harm. Be sure to watch out for:

🍗 BBQ food and drink - Alcohol, corn on the cob, bones, and many desserts are particularly dangerous barbecue hazards. Foods high in fat can cause inflammation of the pancreas which can be very serious, and sometimes even fatal.
🌿 Plants - If you’re planning to be garden-ready, make sure you know which plants are poisonous to your pet. For example, lilies are particularly poisonous to cats, laburnum is poisonous to dogs, and daffodils, rhododendron, and yew are poisonous to both cats and dogs.
🗑 Rubbish - Leftovers if covered in grease or of any kind, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, matches, and kebab skewers can be very dangerous if your pet gets hold of them.

If you are worried that your pet has encountered any of these hazards then please contact our team on 01353 658333.

⭐️ JUNE PET OF THE MONTH ⭐️

June’s pet of the month is Helen, a 1 year old female Maine Coone. She came into the practice on 13th June as she was lame on her right front leg following some time outside.

On examination, Clara, the vet, noted that Helen, as well as lameness, also had signs of head injury, particularly a fractured right upper canine. There were no other obvious injuries.

Clara was concerned that Helen had been involved in an RTA (road traffic accident) and the next step would be hospitalisation and radiographs to investigate the lameness as well as bloody samples and an ultrasound scan of her abdomen to make sure there were no internal injuries.

Once admitted to hospital Helen was given some pain relief to make her comfortable. Blood samples were taken, they were unremarkable, and the ultrasound scan was clear - there was no damage to any internal organs and her bladder was intact.

X-rays were taken of Helen’s front leg which showed there was a fracture to the humerus. The humerus is the largest bone in the front leg and attached to the shoulder.

Due to the nature of the fracture, it was decided that the best option for Helen would be referral to a veterinary orthopaedic specialist.

Helen was taken, by her owner, to the referral centre and she underwent an operation to stabilise the fracture. This was done using an orthopaedic plate and screws.

Once recovered Helen was sent home on pain relief medication and instructions for strict cage rest for 6 weeks (about 1 and a half months).

We are very happy to report that Helen is doing very well post operatively and seems to be using her injured leg well. She will need a further check-up at the referral centre but hopefully no further treatment will be needed.

Helen was very brave and an absolute star throughout her treatment. Well done to Helen and her amazing owner!

🌟 MAY PET OF THE MONTH 🌟

For May we had two pets of the month!

Both have been absolute superstars, not only in the month of May, but during the whole time they have been receiving K-Laser treatment.

Our first pet is Juno who is a beautiful black Labrador and our second is Kova, a handsome domestic shorthair cat.

Both Juno and Kova come in regularly for K-Laser treatment to help with arthritic changes. Juno has K-Laser on her right shoulder and elbow and Kova on both of his shoulders and elbows.

K-Laser is a painless form of energy using wavelengths and a frequency of laser light that increases circulation to the area of the body needing treatment. It can reduce swelling, inflammation, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain that are associated with arthritis.

It can be used to:
- Aid tissue repair following surgery, we use it post operatively to help speed up the healing process
- Wound healing
- Chronic wounds such as ulcers
- Ligament and tendon conditions
- Nerve and spinal cord problems
- Bone and cartilage repair

It is recommended that K-Laser should be given as a multi-visit treatment. We can recommend a treatment plan for you that is specific to your pet's needs.

K-Laser can be given alongside other treatments and both Kova and Juno receive monthly injections to help with arthritis.

Due to the treatments nature, humans and animals should not look directly at the laser, so the RVN and owner must wear goggles. The patient should also wear goggles (doggles) if the treatment is being used on the front part of the body. As you can see, Juno is the perfect model for the doggles!

The nursing team look forward to seeing both Juno & Kova as they are both very relaxed and well behaved during their treatment - they also both love a huge fuss which the nurses are more than happy to supply!
