Not the best photography skills!🤣 but the cutest little clients in today!

🌟🐎Teacup and Jasper are starting to prepare for the 2026 Shetland Grand National season! Along with the occasional school run to collect their riders🫶🏻

🌟🐴Charlie and Rolo take their little jockeys showjumping, dressage and hacking🐎

These 4 have an exciting year ahead - and are kept comfortable every 8 weeks in their off-season.

When Charlie and Rolo work a bit harder outside of racing season in the winter, they are treated more often to keep up with their workload.

The same goes for the super cute shetlands during racing season - they will be seen every 4/6 weeks to keep in tip top form!🌟🌟🌟

Please have a read!! I cannot preach this enough - what you do in the time between appointment massively affects your horses ability to retain a treatment for longer, and stay comfortable!

Your horses physiotherapy appointment is only as effective as how your horse lives in between treatments.

If your horse has reoccurring poll tension, feeding from haynets, having a disharmonious contact, riding a horse overbent etc in between treatments will still mean your horse has tension in their poll when it comes around to their next appointment.

If your physiotherapist provides stretches to do and you don’t do them, the problem will continue to bubble.

If your horse is uncomfortable, and your physiotherapist recommends that they see a vet to investigate further, don’t continue to ride your horse.

If you only ride straight lines, rarely hack, and your horse is constantly sharp and spooky so they’re lunged more often than not in a training aid, your horse is going to have reoccurring rib, neck and back pain.

If your horse is stabled for most of the day, or equally spends most of the day in fetlock deep mud, they’re going to be braced and they’re not always going to feel the full benefits of a treatment as treatments will focus on alleviating the “brace” and not on improving performance.

If you’re riding in a saddle that doesn’t fit, hooves that are unbalanced, or an arena with too deep a footing… changes need to happen so that your horse is able to thrive and develop and not just survive in between treatments.

The quality of a veterinary physiotherapy treatment is arguably just as important as the life your horse leads in between treatments.

As horse riders and guardians, we should be seeing the body under the skin; the nerves, the fascia, the muscles and really envisioning caring for this in everything we do 🤍

Re-sharing this since more clients are being added to the calendar!🐎

I usually will want to see a new client 4 weeks post the initial assessment. This is to assess how well the horse has responded to the treatment, and how long the effects will last before they need to be seen again. This will vary dependent on workload, training intensity, turnout regime, etc etc!

Most maintenance cases are seen every 6-8 weeks. For older horses, or younger horses being brought into work, I recommend a 6 week rotation😊

This may not sound like a particularly long time, so to put it into perspective… horses see the farrier every 6/8 weeks and look how much the hoof grows! Regular ridden work, changes in ground conditions, and especially having ailments like arthritis mean the muscles can become tense within weeks, similar to how quickly they outgrow shoes.

On the other end of the scale, I do see some horses that only hack a couple of times a week, and cope on a 12 week rotation.

👐 How Often Should Your Horse Be Massaged? 🐴

Massage is a fantastic way to keep your horse feeling their best, but how often should they receive treatment? The answer depends on their individual needs, workload, and physical condition.

✅ Maintenance massage
I tend to say, a light, general massage can be done weekly to support circulation, relaxation, and muscle tone. This is excellent for keeping your horse comfortable and preventing minor issues from developing. This can be horse owner level massage.

⏳ Deeper, more intensive work (Professional Therapist) Trigger point therapy and deep tissue massage should not be carried out too frequently, as the muscles need time to respond and recover. Typically, every 4-6 weeks is appropriate, depending on your horse’s needs.

Every horse is different, and their massage schedule should be tailored accordingly. If you’re unsure what’s best for your horse, get in touch with your massage therapist as they can assess your horses individual needs and recommend the best approach!
