Meet Bobo🦄

We welcomed Bobo to the family approximately 4 weeks ago. She is 14 years old and 17hh 📏

With her previous owner, Bo has hunted, competed at riding club, clinics, hacked - had a go at pretty much everything!

She hasn’t been worked for a little over two years, so at the moment lacks muscle tone and stability. Bo will have a McTimoney chiropractor, saddle fitter, farrier and dentist out to ensure she is in optimal condition to begin retraining. It really does take an army to get a horse to optimal functionality💪 As you can see, I am already working on her!

Bo will recieve a relaxation treatment once per week or as needed for her anxiety, and maintenance treatments in which I can focus on problem areas.

For her, the focus at the moment is the hind end musculature (particularily the semitendinous and tensor fascia latae) and her neck musculature (brachiochephalic, cervical and thoracic trapezius, omotransversarius, and splenus). We are hoping to increase the extension of her hindlimb and overall range of movement.

Bo is settling well and enjoying the pampering♥️ tonight we saw lots of positive reactions to treatment, such as licking and chewing.

🦄 Did you know I am beginning MSc Animal Chiropractic at McTimoney College in January?

So what is the difference between what I do now, and what I am training to do?

I am currently trained as an ‘Equine Therapist’ which covers massage, stretching, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the muscles.

💪 Horses are no different to humans, and are prone to muscle ache due to;
🐴 Cold & Damp Weather
🐴 Increased Workload
🐴 Intense Workload
🐴 Stress and Anxiety
🐴 Old Age
🐴 Lack of Movement (i.e being stabled in the winter)

I help to relieve the above issues by increasing elasticity, flexibility and strength of the muscles using various techniques. This allows for more movement, increased performance and keeps your horse comfortable.

A McTimoney Chiropractic Practitioner treats inbalances and abnormalities in the spinal system, for example if your horse is exhibiting a ‘wonky pelvis’ 🦴

Both theraputic techniques are equally important, as one system cannot be stable if the other has imbalances. The muscles can pull a freshly- treated spine out of place, and visa versa.

As of right now, I recommend that I work alongside treatments from a McTimoney Chiropractor. By the end of my Masters at McTimoney, I can offer both specialties in one appointment😊

The duration between appointments, by both a massage therapist and a McTimoney chiropractor, is fully dependant upon age, workload, physical condition within each appointment, to name a few factors. As a general guidance, I recommend 6 - 12 week intervals between massage and maintenance treatments🦄

⭐️Please do not leave an appointment until your horse has an issue - theraputic appointments can PREVENT injury and ailments, as well as help rehabilitate them.

Did you know I am fully insured and registered with AHPR? 🐴

How does this affect you?

AHPR is a regulating body, ensuring that practitioners on their register follow a strict set of rules to protect your horses.

It allows peace of mind that, if your practioner is registered, they are staying up to date on the latest research (completing 25 hours of CPD), treating your horse ethically, and within their scope of practice.

You can search for practitioners in your area on their website, you’ll find me there too! 🐴

Meet my sponsored rider and pony…

✨Olivia and Skye!

Skye (7 year old connemara) and Olivia have been a great team for the last two years. They compete showjumping, cross country, dressage, and take part in hound exercise.

⭐️Just last week, they completed their first 80 Hunter Trials - going clear!
⭐️They recently got their new PB of 66.7 at the British Riding Club Dressage National Championships - getting a Team 3rd🏅🏅
⭐️Next season, they plan to compete in the ODE’s🐎

As you can see, they are both very good at their jobs and regularly come home with ribbons🐴🏅

Skye has regular treatments before competing to ensure her musculoskeletal system is at optimal function, increasing her performance. We have seen an increase in flexibility, hind limb stride length and muscle quality after just a few sessions.

Skye is a great example of why maintenance treatments are so important.

I have availability in evenings and weekends throughout October and November, message to book🐎

I see a lot of people recommending chiropractors and pemf and excluding massage therapists. I want to give you a few reasons why I believe a massage therapist should be used regularly at times in a horse’s life:

We all have different skills to contribute to your horse’s care. Bodies need different kinds of help at different times.

Remember that it’s the muscles that create tensile strength and hold the bones and organs in place. They are also what pulls the body out of optimum, by strength or weakness, which combine to create imbalance and potential unsoundness. This is especially true and important when a horse is coming into increased work, coming back into fitness, or when a horse is older and needs a little help staying loose and comfortable. You can be a great trainer, your horse will still build strength unevenly, it’s simply what happens when out of shape horses are put into exercise. It’s natural, normal and expected.

By being proactive and working with a great massage therapist you can help your horse be more balanced and comfortable and so sounder, more mentally balanced and train more easily. We can help the horse through the process by manually suppling, helping him learn his body, improving awareness and letting him use himself the best he can while he works to build and become, hopefully, the best version of himself.

⭐️DISSERTATION⭐️

With dissertation due date rapidly approaching, I’m buried in statistical analysis and thought it was time to introduce my topic!

I am investigating the use of equine water treadmills, particularly the effect on range of motion of the carpometacarpal joint (the knee) and the metacarpophalangeal joint (the fetlock).

🐴 I have had 4 wonderful horses that made my dissertation possible, all different breeds and ages, some with ailments such as osteoarthritis.

The hope is that we will see an increase in fetlock and knee extension and a decrease in flexion of these joints over a 4 week period.

So why is this important for the industry?🤔

Water treadmills are widely used as a theraputic tool. Unfortunately, there is a very limited range of scientific studies that support water treadmill use for more than one session, despite water treadmills often being used weekly as part of training. The aim of this study is finally to provide indisputable evidence that it can help increase range of motion, even after a week of no treadmill use. This will help to ensure that long term use of treadmills has scientific, rather than just anecdotal, evidence to support inclusion in training regimes.

Please give my page a follow to keep updated on my findings!
