Management
One of the most important, but often least/last implemented, strategies in preventing unwanted behaviours. Often the question is how to stop a behaviour that is already established. Unlearning a behaviour is not possible. The pathways to reinforcement and building that behaviour are already there and that makes the behaviour likely to happen in situations that have reinforcer available for that behaviour.
Preventing the behaviour through management is going to be key to changing a behaviour into a more suitable (for us!) behaviour. Management can be done easily by setting up gates or closing certain doors. And management and prevention can take more thinking and changing of the environment for example clearing the kitchen counters, dining table, the floor, new areas for walking. These take more effort from the human part of the combination.
A gate in the house or an extra gate in the garden may not be as esthetic as you want but it will get the job done. It removes the need to be constantly watching for mistakes which benefits your relationship and let's face it, your patience.
The same goes for keeping valuable things out of the way of your dog by simply placing them out of harms way. Prevention of practicing the behaviour is a major step in the right direction.
Management can seem like a hassle but you are setting the environment up in such a way that makes certain (wanted) behaviour more probable and other (unwanted) behaviour less so. However management alone does not change the behaviour itself, if the opportunity arises your dog will probably still choose the behaviour you are preventing unless you have put training and practice in place as well.
