Sacroiliac joint
The sacroiliac (si) joints are the joints either side of the sacrum, where it articulates the pelvis. These joints rely on the sacroiliac ligaments and surrounding musculature for support.

Function:
The si acts as a force transfer from each hindlimb during the weight bearing phase of each stride.

Injury to the si:
- Primary: due to direct trauma e.g. fracrure
- Secondary: often due to hindlimb lameness, weakness or other pathologies

Common signs of sacroiliac joint dysfunction:
- lack of impulsion
- reduced performance
- difficulty with the farrier
- bunny hopping movement
- reduced hindlimb stride length
- loss of muscle

Any questions about the sacroiliac let me know! If you're concerned your horse may be uncomfortable in their sacroiliac get in touch or speak with your vet!

An initial assessment - what to expect! Initial assessments will always follow a similar layout for all animals 🐴🐶🐱 and will follow these steps:

💬Discussion: We will start with a chat about your animal to discuss their history, day to day lifestyle and treatment goals

🐕Static assessment: I will assess your animal whilst they are standing to assess conformation, whether they are equally weight bearing and if there are any areas that are weaker or overdeveloped

🐎Dynamic assessment: I will always ask to see your horse/dog move to identify areas of weakness and asymmetry and use this information to build part of my treatment plan

💪Palpation: I will then have a feel of your animal to identify areas of restriction, tightness, lower/higher muscle tone and asymmetry. I will also assess joint movement to see if any joints are a bit stiffer or restricted

💆‍♀️Treatment: Using information gathered in the assessment, I will carry out physiotherapy treatment with the overall aim to improve comfort and mobility to prevent injury!

🏋️‍♀️Home exercises: I will give you some exercises / show some massage techniques to do at home to help your animal achieve their physiotherapy goals!

📞Follow up advice: I will provide advice on home environment factors and if there is anything that can be done to improve your animals day-to-day life!

📃Report: A report sent to you and your vet of physiotherapy findings and treatment!

Any questions about initial assessments please do not hesitate to contact me by sending a message on here, email - [email protected] or by phone 😊

Hip dysplasia 🐶🐾

Hip dysplasia is a skeletal condition that occurs during growth in dogs, resulting in laxity of the hip joint.

This causes dysfunction, pain and abnormal joint wear which can cause arthritis, affect mobility and cause muscular changes.

How can physiotherapy help?
