A gentle reminder:

*price increase*

Please note the price change that has been necessary to put in place due to increased costs of tools, equipment etc.

We are still much reduced in price in comparison to industry prices whilst still producing high quality grooms.

We had a visit from Wilf, a 1 year old Irish Wolfhound who is due to be hand-stripped.

Handstripping is a grooming technique used for certain breeds of dog which removes the top layer of hair, allowing the next layers to grow through.

Needless to day, Wilf is the biggest dog we have ever hand-stripped at the college but he was an absolute superstar.

The staff and students have done a great job with him and we look forward to seeing him again in the future.

*Price Increase*

As a training centre, we are fortunate that we can keep our prices low whilst still producing grooms to a high standard.
Due to price increase for all tools, equipment, shampoo etc, we will be putting our prices up by £5 from January 2024 onwards. This is still much reduced compared with many groomers.

We thank you for your understanding and look forward to having your continued custom next year onwards,

Let's talk fleas!

Reports of flea infestations have increased by 47% this year (Rentokil, 2023) with the main cause being the unusual weather we have had. Many owners who have previously not had issues are suddenly finding that their furry friends are carrying fleas and, similar to all dog groomers, we are seeing a lot of dogs coming in with them this year!

Remember:
- The most effective treatments are those prescribed by the vet. Those that can be bought over the counter, or come as part of your pet insurance, do not have the most effective ingredients.
- You will most likely need to treat your house as well as your pets. As well as being on your pet, flea eggs can also hatch out in soft furnishings, carpets, wooden floor cracks. You need to attack each part of the lifecycle.
- As well as the unusual weather, putting your central heating on can also cause the eggs to hatch.

As with all dog groomers, we will take great care in preventing cross-contamination of fleas and regularly spray the parlour. However, the most effective method is for all owners to use a vet-prescribed medication which will protect the individual animal.

Today we completed our first Canine First Aid Course!

All of the students did brilliantly and went away feeling confident that they could administer first aid in a range of different situations. Over the two sessions, we included practical elements including CPR and bandaging, and went through other vital skills such as primary surveys, TPR, and managing various common canine health conditions.

Our next Canine First Aid course is planned for the 8 and 15 December 2023 and will be on the website soon.

In the meantime, check out our other short courses including our Learn to groom your dog/taster day, and the City and Guilds Level 2 certificate in dog walking.

Tomorrow is also our first Open Day of the academic year, so feel free to come to the college to speak with our staff about all of our available courses, 10am to 3pm.

We are looking for dogs that require a 'natural trim' or 'outline trim'.

This consists of a bath, dry, deshed, nail trim, ear clean, health check, and a scissor trim of the outline of the dog including tidying up those grinch feet! Typically done for double-coated dogs that should not be clipped such as golden retrievers and long-coated german shepherds, as well as spaniels, setters, chihuahuas and other dog breeds/crossbreeds that have a long coat.

This trim does not involve clipping the body, but allows for a natural look which is tidied up, keeping the natural coat of the dog whilst enabling it to still be easily maintained.

If you have, or know or someone that has a suitable dog, then get in contact with us today! https://www.capel.ac.uk/community/dog-grooming-salon/

A gentle reminder

As a teaching college, we rely on the dogs coming in and will have planned for this in advance so that our students get the best possible learning experience.

Whilst we appreciate that things do come up, please do make sure that you try to give us as much notice as possible if your dog is unable to attend their appointment. This will then give us the opportunity to book another dog in.

Thank you for your cooperation.

😥2022 - 2023: it's a wrap!

Tomorrow is the last day of term and we have spent the week saying our goodbyes to all of our lovely students. Some will be returning next year to undertake their Level 3 qualifications, some will be setting up their own businesses or continue to work within the salons that they have worked in for placement, and others will be gaining more industry experience. Whatever they choose to do, we wish them all the best of luck and look forward to hearing their individual success stories in the future.

Here are just a few of the daft photos that we have taken of the dogs during this academic year.

Summer issue #2

🌾Grass seeds

It's that time of year where we are starting to see dogs with grass seeds in their coat.

Foxtail grass seeds have a pointy end which can pierce the skin and enter the body, potentially travelling to other areas, causing a lot of pain and damage.

Grass seeds can mainly be found in dogs paws or ears, but can affect any area including eyes or nostrils.

They can be surprisingly difficult to see so make sure you check your dogs feet carefully after every walk, particularly between the toes and in between their pads.

Summer issue #1

How hot is too hot? 🌞 🐕

Ahh, lovely. The sun is shining, everyone is starting to dig our their shorts and flip flops and are looking forward to days of warm weather.

But your dog may not be looking forward to it quite so much. Some breeds of dog suffer from the heat more than others, particularly brachycephalic (flat faced) breeds, elderly dogs and those with thick or matted coats.

Take a look at this picture to help identify when you shouldnt be taking your dog out.

Remember that some dogs don't necessarily know when to stop so will rely on their owner to make a decision to take them indoors and away from the heat.

Plan to walk your dog early on, or late in the evening to avoid the heat.

If you think your dog may be suffering from heat stroke then contact your vet immediately.
