Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?
Exposure to blue-green algae can cause long-term health problems in pets and can even be fatal. By drinking from or swimming in contaminated water, pets are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill.

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.
If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.
Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

It’s important to keep your pet hydrated all year round as it delivers lots of benefits to your pets health, but especially during the warmer months. Cats and dogs both sweat through their paw pads, so as they’ll do this more now it’s hot, they will need to be provided with more fresh water. 💧

Say hello to another brave soul, Millie 🐾
Millie recently had a dental as her owner noticed that she was struggling to eat. During her procedure, the vet was able to get a good look at the extent of the dental disease resulting in Millie having all of her teeth removed!
After a little TLC and time to recover, Millie returned home to continue her recovery and has continued to do well and eating much happier 🥰

Bruno recently visited us for the day to have his teeth filed back as they were getting a little long and causing him to have issues eating 🐾
This is a common issues with these small furries and can cause more serious illnesses 🐹
Luckily for Bruno, we corrected the problem and he has been doing much better at home ❤
Charlie was recently with us for the day to have his castration surgery 🐾
He was such a brave and well behaved boy for us and was already back to his normal self only 24 hours later!
We all wish him a speedy recovery and hope he can get some rest before his post operative check! 🥰

Susie was brought in by a local rescue centre as she had developed diarrhoea and was lethargic. After some fluids and cuddles with our nurse Nicole, she was feeling a lot better and continues to improve at home 🥰

Here at Medivet Enfield we carry out lifesaving surgeries overnight with our dedicated night team.
One example of the type of surgeries that we do is surgery for splenic torsions and gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV). This is when the stomach twists on itself and is a life threatening emergency as it blocks the entrance and exit to the stomach.
Fortunately this patient recovered well from surgery and is doing much better at home. 😀🐾

Sunny is a regular visitor to the hospital due to his heart condition, Luckily however, Lottie and Milo get to stay back home in the garden (unless accompanying for moral support) 😍

We have watched Casper grow over the last few months from a small baby to a large one!
Thanks to our Medivet healthcare plan, this means that we get more opportunity to see his gorgeous little face and spoil him more regularly!

We have had a female tabby and white cat brought in to the practice already passed away. She is micro-chipped but it is not registered and not on our Medivet database.

Luna was recently admitted for gut stasis (slowing or stopping of movement of material through the digestive tract).
For bunnies, this can be very serious and sometimes fatal.
Luckily Luna was brought into us in time to allow treatment and a little TLC to work its magic, allowing Luna to make a full recovery 🐰
I think we can all agree that Biffy is looking very beautiful wearing her pride flag this month 🌈

Sunny was recently brought in by our SVN Eve to be checked by our vet Kelly to reassess his heart murmur. Sunnys little sister can also be very anxious when being separated from her big brother so Lottie came along for the trip also 💙

This poor fellow was found on the N279 bus at 6:30am this morning in a cat carrier. We believe he's been left behind by accident! He is an entire male, very friendly. Please share to reunite us with his family 🐾

Pets can develop skin allergies at any age, so it's important to make sure you know the signs and symptoms. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.
The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis, and although it's a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life. Treatments may include medication, supplements, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments.

The law is changing - from 10 June 2024, cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old. The penalty for not microchipping your cat could be a £500 fine. A microchipped cat has a much higher chance of being reunited - please microchip your cat. Dogs can pick up kennel cough multiple times throughout their lives, but in most cases, they can recover in a few weeks.
During this time, you should encourage your dog to rest and avoid collar and lead activity as it could put more strain on their respiratory system. You should talk to your vet if your dog’s cough persists, or if you notice any changes in behaviour such as a reduced appetite or less energy.

Hey everyone, we had a stray black and white cat handed into us this morning. He is probably over 10 years of age (but may be younger or older), not microchipped, male entire. He is underweight. Is your rabbit protected against Myxomatosis? This highly infectious viral disease has a very high mortality rate and can leave your rabbit prone to other infections.
The best way to protect your rabbit is to vaccinate them, especially as there is no cure if your rabbit becomes infected. There's also ways to reduce the risk of your rabbit catching the virus.

Whether the sun is out or hiding in the clouds, your pets will want to be out in the garden this spring. Did you know there may be some hidden dangers in your garden that can injure or poison your pet?
Pets can develop allergies to certain plants, pollen, and insects. If you notice any hay-fever like symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes or sneezing, contact your vet for advice. They can help you identify the causes and ease your pet’s symptoms.

🌼 DAFFODIL UPDATE 🌼 Many of you have been asking how Daffodil’s recovery is going. As you can see, she is doing amazing! Her wound from her surgery has completely healed, and she no longer has painful sores on her other limb. She is coping extremely well as a tripod! She is now in her forever home with our head nurse Nat, so will continue to receive all the love and care she deserves 💕

We want all your new pets to have a good experience when they come into see us for the first time! Here at Medivet, we offer FREE puppy and kitten health checks 🐶🐱 Our Vet Jake performed one of these checks on our nurse Kadi’s new addition, Marshall 💙 he was the purr-fect patient!
Introducing you to Django, Remy, Charlie and Gus Gus 🐭❤️ we recently rescued these lovable boys and they live with us at the hospital. They get plenty of interaction and socialisation with all the staff. Our nursing team (particularly our Holly 💜) love trying new enrichment activities for them and she recently came up with their own paddling pool to keep them cool during this weather 😎 Very easy to make! Simply fill a shallow tray with water and add some frozen peas and sweet corn…. The boys love it! Why not try it at home to keep your rats cool?
⭐️ UPDATE ⭐️ The lovely stray kitten that was handed into us yesterday has now been taken to a local rescue centre (as you can see he is settling in so well ❤️). If no owner comes forward in 7 days then he will be rehomed to his fur-ever home as per protocol
