Spring 2024 will be here before we know it!

Here are some of our top tips before Calving 2024 kicks off!

👉 Make sure you have your calving area clean and disinfected. This is the first contact newborn calves will meet after birth. It is vital to prevent hard navels, joint ill and scour in young calves.

👉 Make sure to have your calving essentials prepared, clean and on hand:
Lubricant
Clean calving ropes
A calving aid (only use if required!)
Colostrum substitute in case of emergencies
Iodine
A stomach tube

👉Vaccination to prevent and reduce the incidence of calf scour is invaluable. This vaccine must be given no sooner than 3 months to 3 weeks prior to calving. The calf must receive the dams colostrum to benefit from the vaccine. Give us a call to discuss implementing this on your farm!

As always, we are here for advice and assistance when needed 🐮

‼️BVD-Bovine Virale Diarrhea‼️

Hi there,

Hope you’s are all enjoying the lovely weather today! As you can suspect from the title we have to talk about BVD today. In the last two months we have had to put down 7 calves due to BVD. Some of them were in closed herds. As it is devastating for the farms effected, we will do a farm talk about it in the near future. For now, here are some facts about BVD.

1️⃣ BVD is spread via bodily fluids like faeces, blood, semen etc.
2️⃣ There are two kinds of infection : passing infection and persistent infection
3️⃣ Persistent infected or PI’s are calves that got infected in the first 4 months of pregnancy. They will always spread the infection and will eventually die.
4️⃣ BVD lowers the immune system and can cause all kinds of infections like diarrhea, pneumonia, joint ill, infertility in cows etc.
5️⃣ PI’s have to be put down due to being highly contagious.
6️⃣ Vaccination is the best prevention.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER HAD BVD, YOUR COWS WILL HAVE NO IMMUNITY. ONE CONTACT WITH AN INFECTED ANIMAL OR OBJECT AND YOUR HERD IS AT RISK.

If you guys have any questions, give us a ring.

‼️Bull/Ram fertility testing‼️

We are proud to say that we are able to provide fertility testing for your rams and bulls.

❓WHY fertility test?

Keeping a defective bull or ram can be very costly. While completely infertile animals are rare, sub-fertile ones aren't. (About 20% of rams and bulls)
The sub-fertile bull/ram will get some animals pregnant but not as many as he should. He will leave your farm with more empty females at the end of the serving period and will spread your lambing/calving period. So get those boys tested!

Any questions give us a ring!
