Cold weather colic awareness

Cold weather colic awareness

Cold weather colic awareness

With the sudden cold snap, we are seeing a rise in patients presenting with impaction colic.
Horses prefer to drink warm water, and where drinkers are frozen or water is cold, decreased fluid intake can lead to impaction colic. Additionally, reduced exercise associated with cold weather slows down the digestive system, increasing the risk of a blockage.

Signs of impaction colic include:
Decreased droppings
Pawing the ground
Flank watching
Restlessness
Sweating
Rolling repeatedly

Avoiding dehydration during the cold period is essential. To encourage water intake and decrease your horse’s colic risk, you may:
- Ensure your horses have access to a bucket or tub of water- horses are more likely to drink from a bucket than an automatic trough.
- Add a kettle of hot water to your horse’s water bucket- horses are more likely to take in tepid or warm water in cold conditions
- Soak hay if appropriate to do so
- Soak hard feed to increase the fluid content
- Consider supplying a salt lick, or adding a small amount of salt to feed to encourage water intake.

If you are concerned your horse may be exhibiting signs of colic during this cold period, please contact the practice for advice.
