๐Ÿด๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ”ŽFocus Friday! - Understanding the Glycemic Index ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ”

Some of you may have heard of the glycemic index (GI), itโ€™s usually a term used in human diets, but itโ€™s important for our horses too! ๐ŸŒพโœจ Itโ€™s a tool that can help you make smarter feeding choices to keep your equine healthy and happy:

๐Ÿ”ธ What is the GI?

The glycemic index measures how quickly the carbohydrates in feed are converted to glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. For horses, feed with a high GI leads to a fast release of glucose, causing a quick spike in blood sugar. This can be stressful for their bodiesโ€”especially for horses with metabolic issues like insulin resistance or those prone to laminitis. ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ Examples of High-GI feeds, include most grains, while low-GI feeds, like forage, provide a slower, steadier release of energy.

๐Ÿ”ธ Why does it matter?

๐ŸŒฟPerformance Horses: Steady energy is key for endurance and focus. Low-GI feeds can help avoid energy spikes and crashes.

๐ŸŒฟMetabolic Conditions: Horses prone to laminitis, insulin resistance, or equine metabolic syndrome benefit from diets with a lower GI to manage blood sugar levels.

๐ŸŒฟGeneral Health: Keeping blood sugar stable supports overall health and can reduce the risk of metabolic disorders.

By choosing feeds with a low glycemic index, youโ€™re helping your horse maintain a healthy weight, consistent energy levels, and a reduced risk of health issues. ๐ŸŽโœจ

What a fantastic few days it has been at Castle Irvine Necarne with the wonderful horses and riders attending the Dressage at Home and International camp and Gala Show! On Friday evening, I was delighted to be invited to give a short talk on the benefits of Equine Sports Massage and give demonstration on some Massage techniques.
On Saturday & Sunday I was kept busy treating lots of lovely horses ๐ŸŽ and making sure everyone was feeling in top condition for the Gala Show!
Huge thanks to Emma Hobson for asking me to be part of this fantastic event! I had a wonderful weekend and met some beautiful horses ๐ŸŽ.

Looking forward to seeing you all for my talk/demo at 5pm! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ˜€

โ€œMy horse is lame in trot, but fine in canter.โ€

No, no, no. Someone sent me a screenshot of a comment they saw on FB stating exactly this. If your horse is lame in trot, he/she is PAIN. The horse world really needs to concentrate on ACTUAL horse welfare issues, and riding a horse in canter that is lame in trot, is an enormous welfare issue. Riding a horse in WALK that is lame in trot, is a huge welfare issue.

Your horse may well โ€œlookโ€ ok in canter, but actually be in a lot of pain. Canter is a three time beat, so itโ€™s very hard to visualise a lameness, especially a forelimb lameness. If you are actually aware that your horse is visibly lame in trot, and are still riding them, this is a welfare issue (unless under frequent veterinary guidance). If you are aware that your horse is obviously lame in trot but havenโ€™t sought veterinary advice, that is a welfare issue.

If your horse is lame in trot, he/she is also in pain in canter; you just may be struggling to see it.

Letโ€™s focus on ACTUAL, living, breathing, welfare issues. People hacking out lame horses is a real thing, and a serious welfare concern.

**Cancellation Policy**
I appreciate that at times life is busy and you may not be able to keep the appointment booked. However I require a min of 48hrs notice of cancellation. This gives me the time to fill the slot. I have recently had a number no last minute cancellations and no shows ๐Ÿ˜•.
Many other therapists require a 50% deposit on booking...I do not wish to go down this route so please where possible respect this policy๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™
Please be mindful that I travel 100+ miles to treat horses all over Northern Ireland. I need a min of 4 horses in an area to make this viable ๐Ÿ™..I love my job and am happy to travel as far as I have to when it involves helping horses feel better โค๏ธ...however this is my main income and last minute cancellations and no shows (thankfully uncommon) significantly impact me financially. ๐Ÿ™ˆ
Thank you for taking the time to read this ๐Ÿ™
