Anyone that has come to our group training classes, or done 1-2-1 work with us, will have heard us talk about this at least once. In our opinion, it can never be discussed enough. Robert Alleyne articulates the issue very well

Robert Alleyne discusses why some owner's may not think of the possible repercussions of their 'friendly' dog running up to other dogs to say hello, but they...

This video is from the owner of the 2 collies from the post link below. These 2 dogs had previously been assessed by another behaviourist, with very little useful advice on how to resolve the intermittent fighting between the dogs. The owners were told that they were just being puppies, and that things would settle in 2-3 years. The dogs were being separated indoors, which isn't an ideal solution, and not practical for 2-3 years.

The video shows the dogs doing something they haven't been able to do since March, play freely.

With the right work and support, anything is possible. Keep up the good work Karen.

This type of case is making it to court a lot more frequently now,and whether you agree with the Dangerous Dogs legislation or not, it is the law. There is a good chance that some members of the public are fully aware of this, and are actively looking for over friendly dogs to make money.

Of course, teaching your dog not to approach/jump up at people is the best course of action. Failing that, keeping them on a lead around people is a sensible precaution.

This post is doing the rounds again, but still needs a lot of coverage to educate so many dog owners. It's written in a light hearted way, but does represent a very real issue that is happening countless times every day, and is totally avoidable.
I spend a lot of my working day discussing this with clients, please feel free to contact me if you need any help with how to deal with this with your dog, either to stop your dog doing exactly this, or how to control your dog when other dogs approach uninvited.

🐕TAKE NOTE 🐕
It’s not your right to let your dogs go up to other peoples !

The other day I was at the local public park (not a dog park, but dogs are allowed there). We were walking along in a high movement area so I had my dog on a leash. Another dog, off leash, sees us and starts approaching.
My dog needs her space so we start moving away, but the dog got to us before we could leave. My dog was stressing a little so I politely said to the woman, sorry my dog doesn't want to play and ushered her dog away.
Her dog gets the message and moves on.
Quite good, right? Here comes the juicy part:
As I’m leaving the owner comes to me with a speech more or less like this:
Hey, if your dog is nervous and doesn’t even want to play with other dogs, go somewhere else! Don’t come to the park and ruin other dogs fun.
I heard this and a wave of fury started taking over, but suddenly I think I had a lightbulb moment and switched gears completely.
With the biggest, friendliest smile, I opened my arms as wide as I could and said Ohhhhh! Come here... I want to give you a BIG hug!
With panic in her eyes, she backs up, speechless and quickly starts walking away.
I said "Hey, don’t run, I’m so friendly, come on, I only want to give you a hug! I’m friendly I promise... I just want to Hug You!"
Still speechless and backing away with terror now, I said "Wait, You don’t want my friendly hug?"
She yelled No!
I said "Well neither does my dog! Have a nice day.!!!"
As I walked away, I saw her just standing there, speechless and she was leashing her dog! 😅
I think I’ll try this approach more often 🤣

Many of you will have read posts about the current trend of dog theft, and I talk about it daily when I’m working with clients explaining the need to be not only vigilant when out on walks, but also the need to have proper control (a solid recall) if you are letting your dog off the lead. I took a phone call earlier from a client whose dog was potentially targeted yesterday. She was followed then approached while road walking in the Epsom Downs area by 2 men in a large white van. The lady involved walked up someone’s drive and knocked on the door, when the door was opened, the van sped off. The incident has been reported, although no specific vehicle details or descriptions were noted at the time. Please feel free to share to raise awareness, this is happening in the local area.

Dog training in Epsom and the surrounding area.

DB Training & Behaviour is a local dog training company based in Headley, near Epsom, Surrey. We can help you with any of your more complex dog related issues, or simply help with general training. All of our work is based on building focus and a strong bond with between you and your dog. We offer the following services...

Behaviour modification. This help you resolve any issues you are having with your dog, ranging from pulling on the lead to reactivity to others animals or humans. Once the cause of the behaviour is identified, we can support you through rebalancing your dog by working with you on a one to one basis, either at your home, our secure training field or out on normal walks. We also run group classes specifically focussing on behavioural issues rather than just obedience, to deal with issues such as reactivity and over excitement.

General obedience. This is suitable if your dog hasn’t had little or no training, and can be done either in one of our group classes, or a 1-2-1 basis.

Agility. We run regular fun agility classes, which is a great way to help strengthen the bond between you and your dog.
