The 5th November isn't even here yet but we are already seeing a massive increase in the amount of dogs (of all breeds) going missing due to them bolting/jumping fences because they are being frightened by fireworks. Some of them have tragically lost their lives after running scared - often due to heart attacks. Please do all that you can to keep your dogs safe during this time and under no circumstances attend a firework display with your dog.

Please find some helpful tips below:

🐾 Keep walks to daylight hours when fireworks are less likely to go off.

🐾 Keep your dogs on lead and close to you at ALL times incase a firework unexpectedly goes off, a frightend dog can take off into the distance very quickly.

🐾 Make sure their collars/harnesses are done up to fit correctly so they can not be slipped out of. You can walk them in both a collar and harness with leads attached to both for extra security if needed. (A frightened dog will panic and try to escape their lead/harness).

🐾 If they need to go into the garden take them out on the lead. A frightened dog can easily clear a 6ft fence.

🐾 Create a 'safe' place for them to hide in the home, a crate covered with a blanket or a den between chairs usually works well.

🐾 Close doors, windows & curtains and have the radio/TV on to drown out the sound/light of the fireworks.

🐾 Act normal... if you are worried or act differently your dog will sense it and it may make their anxiety worse.

🐾 Make sure your dogs microchip details are up to date and that they are wearing an identity tag should the worst happen.

🐾 If your dog is particularly frightened of fireworks you can buy Adaptil sprays, thundershirts and snoods that seem to work well or you can get stronger medication from your vet.

🐾 If your dog does sadly go missing ensure you inform your local dog warden, microchip company, vets and rehoming group as soon as possible.

Happy Halloweeeeen 🎃
What a teeny tiny puppy with a teeny tiny hat!

So instead of a tip today we will finish with a little recipe to use up some of that leftover pumpkin!

You will need:
1 cup of mashed up pumpkin
2 eggs
2 and a half cups of whole wheat flour
A quarter cup of doggie friendly peanut butter

Combine all of the ingredients together to form a nice ball - add extra flour if the mixture is too wet.

Roll out roughly on to a floured surface and cut in to bone shapes (or any shape you like - the smaller the shape the quicker they will cook, so reduce the baking time as needed)

Place on grease proof paper and bake at 180 degrees (Gas Mark 4) for 15-20mins or until completely hardened.

It’s almost the end of my daily tips week for Halloween so I wanted to remind you of my microchipping services! Also can we take a moment and look how cute this little pup is 😍🐾

TIP 6: Don’t forget to get your dogs microchipped or pre book an appointment with me if you are expecting a new furry addition to your family. It is a legal requirement to get your dog microchipped - you also need to make sure any details are up to date, often people can forget to update their new address or phone numbers. I can easily check your pets details with a quick scan!

TIP 5: Not only is it Halloween season but we are also closing in on bonfire night. Some dogs can have anxiety due to the loud noises and bright flashing lights. Try to avoid walking your dog on bonfire night and instead keep them inside with lots of brain stimulating games/puzzles and training. Make them a safe space with their favourite toys and play classical or calming music to mask the sound of the bangs. Keep calm and happy as your pet can pick up on how you are feeling. You can also buy calming plug-ins and if you are really concerned about your pets anxiety levels then speak to your vet to get some tailored advice.

TIP 4: Make sure you and your dog are visible on your early morning or evening walks - especially if you live in a rural area with less street lighting or if you own a mainly black dog. You can buy flashing collars or harnesses/leads with reflective strips and try to wear brighter clothing. Be safe and be seen 🐾

TIP 3: Be on the look out for plants and trees that are poisonous/toxic to your pooch this time of year.

Here’s a list for you to keep in mind whilst you are out and about 🐾

• Acorns and conkers
• Needles and seeds from Yew Trees.
• Horse chestnut trees.
• Autumn Crocuses.
• Hydrangea bulbs.

Look at those little paws! 🐾

TIP 2: Now the weather is colder, making sure we clean our dogs paws after a walk is more important than ever. Make sure to clean between the toes not only to get rid of pesky dirt, but grit and salt from the road can cause irritation.

It is also good to keep fur trimmed around your dogs paws/toes - you can also apply specific dog friendly waxes for extra paw protection.

COUNTDOWN TO HALLOWEEN 🎃

Over this week I will be sharing a tip a day on how to keep your pets safe and happy this time of year - as the nights get longer, the weather gets cooler and everything gets more spoooooooky 👻

TIP 1: Look out for decoration dangers such as loose wires, open candles and stray chocolate or sweet wrappers. Inquisitive noses can often find new and unusual things in your home which if ingested could lead to a pricey vets visit!

I carry water and various other cooling aids with me but its not always a risk worth taking.

If I do need to end a walk before its time or re-arrange you will be notified and time will always be made up..
