Antibiotics are essential for treating many conditions in animals and people, but bacteria are becoming resistant to many antibiotics that we use in human and veterinary medicine. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop defences that protect them from antibiotic medications, making treatment less effective. 💊

Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases the risk of antibiotic resistance and can lead to side effects or delay an accurate diagnosis. It is also really important to know that inappropriate disposal of unused antibiotics could contribute to antimicrobial resistance, as they can pollute the environment by entering water systems or being consumed by wildlife. 💊

Our practice is proud to support the safeguarding of antibiotics. We would like to encourage our clients to return any unused or out of date antibiotics so they can be disposed of safely. 💊

The appreciation day was created back in 2019 and takes place every year on the 1st of October meaning it's just around the corner! In the coming weeks, (and all year round!) be sure to offer our vet receptionists a big thank you for all their hard work and care.💕

Facts about.....Canine brucellosis 🐕🌍
-A bacterial disease found in dogs, caused by ‘Brucella canis’.
-It mainly affects the reproductive organs, can cause infertility and loss of pregnancy but it can also affect the joints and spine causing lameness and back pain.
-As a profession, we are seeing an increase in cases due to the rise in imported pets from outside of the UK. The UK was free from canine brucellosis.
-A large concern is that the infection is 'zoonotic', which means it can be transmitted to humans. Hence is it very important to control the spread to protect both animal and human health, tests can be conducted to see if your pet is carrying the infection.

Antibiotics are important medications for treating bacterial infections in the veterinary field. As in human medicine, we are seeing higher antimicrobial resistance and this is a huge concern, for human and animal health alike. We need to practice antibiotic awareness, to ensure the antimicrobials we have continue to have good effect.
We as a practice audit our antibiotic use every month, and any variation is discussed 💊

⚠️TOXIN WARNING: Slug/Snail pellets 🐌

Slug and snail pellets/deterrents(containing metaldehyde) can be toxic to our pets. Ingestion of these products can cause severe and rapid clinical signs which include tremors and seizures. This can lead to hyperthermia (increase in body temperature) and result the serious consequence of secondary organ failure.

With prompt and intensive supportive treatment dogs can survive, but unfortunately without treatment this type of poisoning can be fatal.

If you think your dog could have eaten any sort of slug/snail bait, please call us for advice. Please make sure, if possible you provide us with as much information about the product. Even better, if you bring the box with you it will help us with decision making on the best treatment plan.
