We get asked what a typical volunteer stable work shift is like.
On arrival be met with a mix of welcoming whinnies and looks of 'what time do you call this? I've been waiting.'
Check hay bins are full and ready for shift and quick chat with Janet about anything special today.
Head to turnout areas, check they are secure, have water and turn on the electric fence (wait for the buzz)
Bring in horses, turn out horses. Fingers crossed no one gets themselves in a pickle in your shift
Select favourite tools (yes everyone has favourites) and launch into the stables. Muck out, clean water, hay and feed. All the horses have their own personalised feed. Message sponsors any updates.
Drink a beverage, hydration is important ☕ Feed cat(s) 🐈 if they appear. Talk to a pony 🐴 ,they are excellent therapists. Catch up with other volunteers and their crazy lives.
Avoid being in any FB photo shoots as by now you are somewhat grubby and have hay sticking out of your hair.
Check all the ponies have what they need and are where they should be, perhaps step up for grooming, exercising, or tack cleaning, poo picking fields and topping up field waters, laying electric fence, perhaps carrying long bits of wood with Roger from A to B for no obvious reason, or whatever other madness is needed today.
Sweep the yard, wash some feed bowls. Aim to handover having finished up with a tidy round for the next team in. Fit in a few minutes scratching someone's ears.
Go home, shower, eat, sleep, do the day job and oddly enough come back and repeat.
