Little Valley Animal Shelter, Exeter (RSPCA)

Little Valley Animal Shelter, Exeter (RSPCA) Little Valley is a self-funded branch of the RSPCA based in Exeter, Devon. Reg Charity No: 205154
(318)

Little Valley Animal Shelter is owned and run by the South, East and West Devon Branch of the RSPCA and is located on the outskirts of Exeter. The Shelter, founded in 1991, supports the work of local RSPCA inspectors by caring for and rehoming over 1000 of the neediest animals from our local area every year. Little Valley’s running costs are in the region of £10,000 per week and, although we are p

roud to be affiliated with the RSPCA, sadly we receive no automatic funding and we therefore have to rely totally on local support from our own community to fund our vital animal welfare work. All animals stay at the Shelter until they are adopted into caring, responsible homes. A homechecker visits every prospective owner and follow-up checks are made to ensure the animal is well and settled. The Shelter can accept a wide variety of animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, aviary birds, farm animals and equines. We also hold wildlife, pending their transfer to RSPCA West Hatch in Taunton. Animals are only put to sleep on veterinary advice or because of incurable behavioural problems.

Please meet gorgeous 2 year old Milo!
Milo came to the shelter as his owners were moving and he is a very sociable and affectionate chap who loves to play. Milo does have a bit of an anxious streak and he is easily spooked by loud noises so he would prefer a quiet home with no other pets.
Sadly, dear Milo has a long term medical condition which means he needs daily medication and regular vet checks. Unfortunately, because of his condition, he may not live as long as other cats of his age.
Ideally Milo's new home would be local to the Exeter area and we feel he could live in a family with a child of secondary school age, pending a meet and greet at the shelter.

Dear little Darwin is about 18 months old and has has had a bit of a rough start in life.
As a result he is quite nervy and wary of people. Darwin is becoming braver every day (with the help of some cat treats!) though he still doesn't lie to be touched.
We are hopeful that given time, Darwin will gain confidence and start to enjoy human company more. This sweet boy would love a new home with owners used to nervous cats who will give him the time and space he needs to settle in.
We are currently looking for an adult only home for Darwin and we'd need to get to know him a bit better to see if he could live with a dog.

Dear little Archie is about 3 years old. He is a friendly boy but is quite timid so will need a quiet new home with owners who are happy to bear with him while he settles in. Archie likes fuss and attention from people he knows well but is a busy boy so hasn't cuddled up on a lap yet. He is very active and loves to play. His toys are always in disarray in the morning, especially if there is catnip in his pen. He also enjoys a good chase game with his rod toys. He would be best suited to an adult home but may be able to share it with a quiet child of Secondary School age (as long as they all get on when they meet at the Shelter). We would need to get to know him a little better before we could decide about living with other pets.

Celebrating the Women of Little Valley – International Women’s Day

Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the incredible women who make RSPCA Little Valley Animal Shelter what it is.

From our dedicated staff to our amazing volunteers and supportive trustees, our shelter thrives because of their passion, expertise, and unwavering commitment. Whether in our animal care team, working tirelessly to give animals a second chance, or in our charity shops, raising vital funds to keep our work going, these women are the heart and soul of everything we do.

Women have shaped our shelter from the very beginning.
Little Valley was founded in 1988 by Miss Daphne Absalom, built into what it is today by our first Manager, Maggie Court, and officially opened in 1991 by Princess Elizabeth de Croÿ. Throughout our history, women have led, nurtured, and fought for the animals in our care.

Even now, 95% of our workforce is female, and 80% of our supporters are women. That means the majority of those rescuing, rehabilitating, rehoming, fundraising, and advocating for animals in need are women making a difference every single day.

To every woman who has been part of our journey—past and present—thank you. Your strength, kindness, and dedication inspire us all.

Today, we celebrate you. Happy International Women’s Day!
