Step 4: Comb your section with your comb
Just like the brushing step, brush every hair in your section from left to right. Start with a wide-toothed comb and finish with a fine-toothed comb.

Step 3: Brush your section with a pin or slicker brush
Using your pin brush or your slicker brush, brush each section of coat from root to tip. For longer or delicate coat, use a pin brush; for shorter coat, use a slicker brush.

To keep a consistent system, brush from left to right (or, from right to left if that floats your boat!) to make sure you brush every hair.

Step 2: Mist the coat with brushing spray
Never brush a dry coat! The brushing spray provides lubrication, prevents damage, prevents static, and can condition the coat at the same time.

Lightly mist your sections of coat, but do not saturate the coat.

Make sure to choose a brushing spray that works with your dog's coat type and texture.

Step 1: Create sections or 'lines' of coat

Create your sections or 'lines' of coat. When creating the sections, think about how you will want to brush each new section on top of already brushed coat. For example, to brush the body start at the belly and brush each section down; then, make a new layer above your brushed layer. Or, if brushing the coat up on the front legs (for volume), start at the elbow brushing up, and create a new layer below your brushed layer.

Using a parting comb can be a helpful way to 'part' or 'separate' the coat in a straight line to the skin. Each section should be 1-3 fingers wide depending on your dog's size and coat length.

For each section, after you have brushed all the coat in your 'line' or 'section', you will comb through it. We recommend you start with a wide-toothed comb and finish with a fine-toothed comb (especially for Scissored and Drop Coat types).

What is Line-Brushing?
Line-brushing involves taking small sections of your dog's coat and systematically spraying, brushing, and then combing each section. By going section-to-section, you ensure that you are brushing every single hair, from root to tip! This is the only one to have a perfectly prepped coat before trimming.

By going 'line by line', you also make sure you are getting to the root every time - also referred to as "getting to the skin". This is also the best way to prevent matting in your daily and weekly grooming routine.

This is a great technique for Poodles of all Varieties, Havanese, Bichon Frise, Bedlington Terriers, Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Afghan Hounds, and many other breeds! The tools and techniques you use may differ depending on your dog's coat type.
