I’ve delayed posting this because it’s a long one but needs to be said…Lately there has been increases in dog attacks and fatalities 😢 My heart goes out to all the families, victims and the dogs. Following these are mass amounts of social media opinions flinging around.

The thing that I see as a huge contributing factor within social media posts following these tragedies is a massive lack of education. People calling out other dog breeds because their dog ‘wouldn’t hurt a fly’, the whole it’s how you raise them and many more. Now this is a dangerous mentality to have. Let me talk about it…

So one of the last confirmed breed was a Belgian malinois. A breed me and my family share our life with. Like many Malinois he’s intelligent, loyal, loving and agile but he’s also impulsive, hot headed and likes to push boundaries. Genetic at its finest. Do I love him dearly…. Yes (well most days 😅) but do I 100% trust him…. Absolutely not, nor do I 100% trust my other dogs. That being said if my dogs were having an off day I know for sure I would rather it be my spaniel I have a bite from than my malinois….Why? Because the size, bite strength and intent would be so much less severe.

What I’m trying to say is any animal (yep that’s us humans too) can injure and kill. To keep trying to sugar coat certain dog breeds deeming them ‘Nanny dogs’ etc is where problems start. Start respecting the animal you have in your home, research and educate. To know the calibre of your dog and what they could be capable of. Yes they may never have set a foot out of place but they could! Hell we don’t all walk round being aggressive, picking fights but anyone can have an off day.

In my opinion having a dog has gotten out of control. There are huge gaps in education and many people don’t research anymore. Breeding is just a money maker for many and rescues are over run. Respecting dogs for what they are has gone to pot. Working, strong breeds are becoming more popular and spend most of their life with a daily 45 mins chasing a ball. People pick up trainers when there are problems rather than deeming training as a mandatory part of having a dog from the start. When problems do arise people lack management and many resort to rehoming their dog to be someone else’s problem.

Now before anyone comes at me for basically spelling out dogs are dogs I do love my dogs dearly, spoil them, they are family members, understand they have emotions but for me to believe they can’t or won’t ever be the predatory dog within does them a huge injustice.
