🐑 Attention Sheep Farmers! 🐑

We have received important news regarding the upcoming pre-mating season. Unfortunately, there will be no availability of the CEVAC (EAE abortion vaccine) for 2024.
We understand the challenges this may pose and encourage you to explore alternative measures to ensure the health and safety of your flocks.

The Sheep Veterinary Society has published advice for
dealing with the absence of this vaccine which includes:

🐑For flocks that have previously regularly vaccinated against EAE, there will this year be a small cohort of unvaccinated replacement ewes but the risk to them is low if the remainder of the flock is protected. They should be marked and vaccinated next year when they are not pregnant.
🐑The Sheep Vet Society also have advice available for flocks that are considered higher risk for EAE, such as those that have experienced a recent EAE outbreak.

The Sheep Veterinary Society has issued guidelines which you can read here; https://buff.ly/3SHBFjM

will be speaking to their routine flocks but if you have any concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch Stay informed and connected with your local vet for more
guidance and support. Lets work together to navigate this season successfully.

Join us in supporting our client Stephen Raymond as he gears up for his Sky Jump fundraiser tomorrow!

Stephen's father-in-law Lloyd Curtis very sadly passed away in 2021. He was a dairy farmer nr Broadwindsor in West Dorset, a longstanding client of Synergy, and one of the local community's great characters. Lloyd's family found great comfort in the support provided by the Weldmar Hospicecare team.

This local charity provides specialist end of life care for adults with a life limiting illness, and support for their loved ones. We wish Stephen the best of luck for tomorrow as he takes the leap 🛬. We are proud to support the family in their fundraising efforts.

If you would like to make a donation we are sure the family would be very grateful - , please follow the link here https://buff.ly/4daesi1

Last week we were proud to host a group of Japanese cattle vets, invited to England by Boehringer Ingelheim to discuss all things BVD 🐄!

Vets Keith and Tom are shown here at one of our dairy clients, who had made every effort to make our guests feel welcome 🇯🇵🇯🇵!
The two day visit started with a seminar about the wider impact of BVD. This was followed by a visit to a dairy farm on the Somerset Levels where colleague Nick Britten lead the delegates through the problems caused by uncontrolled BVD infection on the farm, how he had investigated the situation and brought it under control!

On the second day the group were shown around another unit where BVD has been successfully eliminated. Great importance is attached to keeping it out by the farmer and vet for the farm Tom. After lunch the group visited Bagnell Farm Butchers and Livestock - a BVD-free pedigree Ruby Red Devon herd where great importance is placed on maintaining high health status.

☀️ Smallholder Summer Event a great success! ☀️

Thank you to everyone who recently joined us at our Rampisham HQ for our Smallholder club summer evening meeting, hosted by our fabulous interns Anna and Megan. It was a great turn-out, with everyone enjoying the quiz and making the most of the opportunity to socialise with other smallholders. We hope that you all learned something useful to take back with you, and perhaps a few unexpected facts about the different species too!

Anna and Megan are finishing their internships in July, but we are thrilled that they will both be staying on as permanent Synergy vets – Anna for the Synergy Farm Health-Lympstone team and Meg for our Central team.

Watch this space for details of the next Smallholder event later in the year, we hope to see you there!

Grateful thanks to our sponsors for this event Duggan Veterinary Ltd

14/06/2024

Our vet Anna was recently called to an alpaca farm as the owners were concerned about a new born alpaca.

Colostrum is just as important for crias (baby alpacas) as it is for lambs and calves. This cria was very weak when it was born and didn't have a suckle reflex, so there was a genuine worry that she didn't get enough colostrum in the first crucial 6 hours. After 12-24 hours absorption of the antibodies in the colostrum stops.

In order to get enough antibodies into this cria Anna performed a plasma transfusion (plasma is a blood product where the red blood cells are spun out and removed). This particular farm collects blood from their own adult males to obtain the plasma, and keeps it frozen for rare emergencies like these.

She was up and standing within 10 minutes of the transfusion so a great outcome 🦙 😊

In 2001 WorldMilkDay was established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations to recognise the importance of milk as a global food, and to celebrate the dairy sector. Each year since, the benefits of milk and dairy products have been actively promoted around the world, including how dairy supports the livelihoods of one billion people 🐄🥛🌎

This year’s theme will focus on celebrating the vital role dairy plays in delivering quality nutrition to nourish the world. Dairy is an accessible, affordable, and nutrient-dense food, and an essential part of balanced diets across the world.

We are proud to support and appreciate the hard work and passion that goes into every drop of milk produced by our hardworking dairy farmers and their cows 🐄 🚜 🌾 😊 .

Here we see our vet Tom Woolacott performing a caesarean on a British Alpine Dairy Goat 🐐 !

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) continues to prove challenging, accounting for a large proportion of our obstetrical visits recently, often resulting in caesareans. Virus transmission is closely linked to midge activity, typically peaking during periods of high temperature and rainfall in late summer/early autumn. Midges biting at days 25-50 of pregnancy in sheep/goats and 62-180 days in cattle are most likely to cause fetal abnormalities. Spring-calving herds (both dairy and suckler) have been particularly badly affected this year.

APHA are continuing to offer free-of-charge surveillance testing so please do contact us if you have any animals born with suspected malformations or deformities.
