Yesterday we spent the day at British Free Range Egg Producers Association Live!

Charles Macleoad, Commercial Manager Layers, was on the conference stage in a panel discussion on 'why manure matters'. He summarised the BFREPA sponsored Manure Survey - supported by St David's and suggested interventions that could aid distribution of poultry manure.

Thank you to Linda Grayson and Ben Sloan from LUBING (UK & IRELAND) LIMITED for joining us at our client event last night, sharing how their misting system can be used to support flock health and welfare, year round, not just when the weather's hot.

To complement this, vet Ben Crisp shared more information on humidity and the science behind its impact on bird health, welfare, and performance - if it’s not managed effectively – when temperatures are high or as we have now - low!

This autumn, the weather has remained unseasonably warm and overnight temperatures have remained quite high.

However, with this about to change, it’s important to check Minimum Ventilation Rates carefully to make sure that when overnight temperatures do drop, ventilation rates are adequate to keep the house atmosphere clear and dry.

E.coli infection in poultry continues to be an issue, with the source/route of infection and the options available to prevent and treat it, often confusing. Here I’ll share how our improved understanding of the routes of infection have influenced our approach to E. coli prevention and treatment and run through some of the options that are now available to producers. Identifying the source/getting to the root cause of the infection is also important – however that is a whole other article that I’ll save for another day.

Congratulations to vet Charlotte Cole who’s been awarded a Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust Scholarship and is preparing to join the 2025 cohort.

Awarded to those working in the food, farming, horticulture and rural industries, scholars travel worldwide to learn from experts and farmers in their chosen field, before sharing their knowledge, to benefit UK sectors.

Charlotte’s study topic is ‘Preparing Pullets for the Future of the UK Egg Industry’, and we look forward to sharing her journey over the next 18 months!

As current chairman of the Scottish Poultry Club, regional lead vet Matt Balfour addressed this year’s annual dinner last week.

This event, for all sectors of the poultry industry encourages people from across the UK to attend. The event also recognises a person each year who has made an outstanding contribution to the Scottish poultry industry, and a young person who is committed and dedicated to their early career in the poultry industry.
