Throwing treats onto the floor for your dog to sniff out is a great way to add enrichment to your walks! 🐶
𝐖𝐡𝐲?
🤩Sniffing releases a mood-boosting hormone called dopamine in the dogs brain, making them feel good
🤩The feel-good hormones released during sniffing promote a calming effect which is great for nervous or reactive dogs
🤩Engaging the brain in sniffing games is a great form of mental exercise
🐶It’s a natural behaviour with so many benefits!

Allowing your dog to run up to another dog is dangerous. You don’t know if that other dog is friendly or comfortable with other dogs. Even if they are…how would you react if a stranger ran over to you and demanded to play?
People will say ‘they’re just being dogs’ and ‘let them play’ but wouldn’t you rather know your dog is safe and comfortable?
Wolves will minimise their interactions with strangers, and avoid unnecessary encounters with other wolves they don’t know. So why do we encourage our dogs to interact with strangers and teach them it’s okay to run to them? What happened to ‘stranger danger’?
Play is important for development and social skills, but think first. Just because your dog is friendly and wants to play, doesn’t mean another dog does. Furthermore, running up and getting straight to it without consent is blatantly rude, even to a dog. Think if someone you didn’t know came up to you, didn’t say “hi” or introduce themselves then suddenly reached a hand out onto you. Would you like that?
Every time your dog runs up to another they do not know, you are allowing them to take a risk. It takes one time for them to run up to the wrong dog- that one time could even be fatal. Ask owners if their dog is likely to be comfortable in this situation, allow play with dogs they do know, and if you are going to allow your dog to interact with strangers, encourage your dog to calmly introduce themselves rather than charging first, thinking later…that’s something you will never regret.

Exercising your dog may require more than walks and play!
It’s important to exercise the mind 🧠 and the body 🐕
Remember- never force your dog into a situation in which they are uncomfortable. Find what works best for you and your dog as an individual 🐶💜
Easy to teach… but potentially life saving!
This is just one of the life skills included in my obedience training package.
I didn’t say a word to Nala here before opening the front door- but we both know she knows the front door is not to be crossed through without my say so. I can bring the shopping in, let guests in, nip out to the car etc without worrying about her running out because I know she has this life changing training.

Does your dog get fixated on other dogs on a walk?
Do you struggle getting your dog’s attention around other dogs?
Have a go at the ‘Engage, Disengage’ game!
Find a distance where your dog is able to look at a distraction without getting too interested.
Use a marker word such as ‘yes’, ‘good’, or ‘nice’ and say it in an enthusiastic tone seconds after your dog has looked at a distraction.
As soon as the dog looks back to you, reward them with a treat or toy.
Wait for them to look back at the distraction and repeat.
Next you can gradually increase how long your dog has to look at you before the treat! Say your marker word, wait a few seconds and then treat. Start off with only 1 or two seconds before the treat- then slowly increase!
This is a great game for building engagement, improving attention span and reducing fixation.
Recall training games are an amazing tool to building a reliable recall before letting your dog off lead. Longlines are perfect if you’re still training your dog to recall.
So let’s talk about some examples!
‘Magic Hands’ is a great, simple game that adds value to being close to you & builds focus. All you have to do is take handful of small treats, and drop some whenever your dog is paying attention to your hand, wait for them to find the treat and refocus on your hand- then drop another!
Similarly, you can throw a treat or toy away from you, but have another ready when your dog comes back to you! This is best on a longline, but is super rewarding because the dog gets to run around, while still learning that coming back is even more rewarding.
‘Backwards recall’ is where we wait for our dog to look at us while wondering around on the longline, and then walk enthusiastically backwards! When the dog follows, reward them with a big fuss, a treat or a toy.
Get the whole family involved with ‘Ping Pong recall’… this is where two or more people take turns to call the dog to them, rewarding the dog with a treat on their arrival!
Remember- unless your dog already has a good recall, they should be on a lead, longline or training lead to keep you, your dog and others safe ☺️💜
Why is teaching ‘middle’ so useful? 🌟You can keep your out of the way in crowded places to prevent people stepping on or tripping over your dog. 🌟It can put you in a better position to deal with situations such as a dog charging over to your dog or to prevent unwanted interaction.🌟It’s great for relationship building and can create a safe, relaxed position for your dog.🌟If you don’t want your dog wondering around, it can make a perfect portable boundary.
