MATTING SEASON 🍂

Yep. It sure is!

This time of year we have wind, rain, mud, puddles, brambles, twigs and whatever else your dog manages to get themselves into on a walk.

And what is the best thing to do… BRUSH!!
I know us dog groomers ‘bark’ on about it all the time but it’s true, brushing is the only thing that can help when it comes to matting. Try to let the coat dry first and don’t bath too much if you can help it. If there is a tight knot, just snip it out! ✂️

Make sure you keep your dog’s coat at their normal manageable length, it’s more important this time of year. Also make sure your de shedding dogs like Labradors are up to date with their grooming - if you notice different colours in their coats, particularly brown hairs in a black coat, that’s most likely dead hair and a deshed will help the skin.

Book in now if you haven’t already!

Today marks an extremely sad day

One year ago today the most incredible human left this world and I think she look a piece of everyone she ever met with her.

Her amazing family have set up The Ruby Goodhew Foundation in her name to financially help other Vet Nurses, like Ruby.

I met Ruby through horses and we became very friendly on Facebook, sharing a lot of interests and beliefs. She documented her journey with leukaemia, and I followed along, and I adored her updates, plus I cried with her.
Ruby sent me a message only a couple of months before she died to tell me what an incredible little rider Indie is. She didn’t need to do that.

Rubys story:
In 2018, when approaching her final exams, Ruby got very sick. She was soon admitted into Addenbrookes Hospital in a critical state and was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Life for Ruby after this was extremely tough and I’ve never known a bigger fighter.. Whilst undergoing intensive chemotherapy, Ruby found out she had passed her exams and, still in hospital, was proud to be a Registered Veterinary Nurse.

After two years of treatment Ruby was set to return to work as an RVN in 2020, but sadly Ruby relapsed. She did however manage to do join a vet team as an RVN between relapses.
In 2022, she relapsed for a 4th time.

After a five and a half year battle, on 28th October 2023, Ruby died at home with her family and husband at her bedside. She was only 28 years old.

To help towards this amazing cause and to honour Ruby and her family, I will be putting a tin/box in the shop. If you have any spare change or want to leave me a tip, please just pop it in the box I know it won’t equate to millions but at least I will know I’m doing my bit and I really hope Ruby knows.

Much love Ruby, you are so missed.
💚

I’ll post the link to donate on my story.

That’s it. The clocks have changed.
It’s officially the end of summer.

And with that comes MUD!

This time of year it is common for people to think dogs need to keep their coats longer but this is actually the worst thing you can do.
Dogs don’t get cold on walks if they’re kept active. The movement heats their body and keeps them toasty. Whilst they’re resting in the house, the heating is usually on in some capacity, to heat up us humans, so the dog will be warm - probably too warm in all honesty

Wet, muddy conditions leave longer coats more likely to pick things up, get knotty and even cause skin problems.

So the best thing to do is make sure your grooming is regular and you don’t veer off the normal coat length.

Keep your dogs happy with winter, your house mud free and your sanity in check.

Beautiful little Crumble 🐾

This just proves that “short” doesn’t mean “not cute”

It’s all about the detail and there’s plenty you can do with short coats to make them still look cute and teddy-like.

PS… his ear ARE level, he just insisted on tilting his head in all of the 78293748383837 photos I took 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️

Fenellas Fur Care

I have tried the set that I was sent by Fenella Fur care and I must say I’m quite impressed.

The shampoos both smell delicious and they lather up really well to get a full coverage. I was skeptical about the deodoriser but in fact it worked really well when I had a little dog in the other day who had rolled in a dead seal 🤢 if it can mask that it can mask anything!

All in all very very happy and I would happily order more 🙌🏼

The Boss.. 🐩

Those of you who have been in for appointments recently will be aware of the changes to the shop.

I have taken the decision to close the retail side of the business and concentrate on the dog grooming. With joining me and my little business forever expanding, I felt the retail was a stress neither of us needed.

However all is not lost, there will be some shampoos in the shop along with your favourite £1 treats to give your hounds after their grooms - however payment will need to be in cash only, on the days I’m not in.

Excitingly enough though, we have decided to do some limited stock in the farm shop, a few bags of food, some leads, packet treats and few other things, so please do pop in and have a look.

We are all very excited with the way our businesses are going and hope you understand the need to grow the groomer larger, quicker than I imagined!

Currently on day three of some very long busy days, so I’m off to have a cuppa!

Jake and Ria got to try the amazing .furcare spiced bark shampoo

I must say I am rather impressed. I often get asked by companies to try different products and give my opinion and most of the time I say thank you but no thank you 😜 however this was rather lovely.

-
It lathered really well and a little went a long way. I quite liked the smell, not sickly and over powering, it was just right and smelt “posh”… over all seriously impressed.

I have a few more items in their range to try so keep an eye out 👌🏼

Digby has been coming to me since a puppy and I just adore him!

Being a Sealyham, Digby should have a tight cut head and longer eyebrows but we compromise on a top knot… and I’m totally here for it 😂 he thinks he’s fab too!

Oh yes 👍🏼
I groom both blind and deaf dogs in my salon.
Thankfully since both Kate and I are 1-2-1 groomers, the salon is very calm and quiet, meaning dogs with sight loss or hearing loss have a relaxing time in the salon, rather than a stressful one.

Book in anytime, just make me aware at the time of booking so we can make allowances 🐾

Happy NATIONAL BLACK DOG DAY !!! 🎉

Did you know that black dogs are the least likely to get picked in a rescue, purely due to their colour? 😢

I love black dogs. I have a black labradoodle called Wellington, Poppy has a black spaniel called Beanie and Indie has Ralph the Whippet.
How anyone cannot love a black dog is beyond me!

Well, I must say I can spot a home groom from a mile away BUT sometimes it can’t be helped.

Here are my top tips to help you..

1) Don’t cut the eyebrows
Ok, this is half true. If the eyebrows are down to the tip of the nose then yes, they probably need a trim but if not, leave them alone. Eyebrows trimmed back too far make the dogs look like a bald bearded man. The best thing is to cut the bits of hair that stick up in front of the inner corner of the eye.

2) Don’t pull and snip 😬
Often I see some nasty cuts on dogs from owners who have pulled the coat down before snipping. When you pull the hair, it pulls the skin out and makes it harder to see. You are far better just leaving the hair/skin alone and snipping freehand. Groomers are not hairdressers.

3) Brushing out matts
DON’T DO THIS.
Brushing out a matt is torture for your dog. Many owners say they use metal combs to get matts out too - NO! Put the comb down!
Metal combs should only ever be used for checking the coat after brushing with a slicker, and matts should always be cut. Aim for the middle of the matt to break it (never underneath) and gently go over with a slicker. If you just brush the matts it will be very painful for the dog, possibly leading to them getting very angry.

Like I always say, if you need help with keeping your dog in good condition, please just ask. I’m here to help.

None of this replaces a good groom. All dogs should be on a regular grooming schedule, appropriate to their breed, with a dog groomer who knows their stuff.
