Weight awareness month 💪

One of the most commonly asked questions we get asked about pets' weight 'is his/her weight ok?'

The answer is there is no set number we can assign to each animal. Instead we follow a scoring scale, where we assess each dog/cat's body condition and assign a number.

We use this number as an indicator of how close they are to ideal body weight and can use it to calculate an estimated ideal body weight.

If your pet is any higher on the scale than a 6/9 it is likely weight loss will be best achieved using a veterinary approved weight loss diet. Follow tomorrows post to see what we have to offer and help teach you about the benefits of these foods in the weight management of pets.

Weight loss awareness 👩‍⚕️

When our pets get ill, one of the most heartbreaking things is when we can't do anything about it. 😒

BUT, obesity is a disease we CAN do something about! Start your pets weight loss journey today. Why you ask❓ ⬇⬇

The benefits of maintaining a healthy weight in our pets:

💉It decreases the risk of diseases such as diabetes. Diabetes management in our pets, most commonly requires twice daily insulin injections and regular blood tests. This is a big commitment and costly.

🩺It eases pressure on their joints, particularly as animals get older and may already have arthritis.

💓🩺 It helps promote healthy functioning of the vital organs. Obesity can put excess pressure on vital organs such as the heart and lungs contributing to cardiac and respiratory issues.

💪It helps them stay active. Owners often see an increase in activity when their pet loses weight!

The BIGGEST ONE.... it can be life pro-longing and more time with our pets is something we all wish for 💝

We will be posting more owner information for the rest of January. Please follow our posts or get in touch for some advice.

Remember ‼️‼️

Livestock worrying is unacceptable.

Even well-trained dogs should be kept on a lead to minimise stress or injury they could cause to livestock. 🐕‍🦺

‼️IMPORTANT NOTICE ‼️

Unfortunately, while this may not apply to the majority of our clients our number of missed appointments is on the rise.

Please can we kindly ask people who cannot make a scheduled appointment or feel they no longer need it to let us know, with plenty time where possible.

Each day we have clients looking for appointments who we may not be able to accommodate at certain times or on that day and then they unfairly miss out on these slots.

To let you get an idea, we have had around 12 missed appointments in the last week.
That is a staggering 48 missed appointments a month that could have helped other pets and owners.

At Grahams Road Vets we are big advocates for cat friendly practice 🐱 Which means we like to keep stress to a minimum for our feline friends visiting the practice.

One of the biggest stressors for cats coming in for an appointment is their journey to the vets. Please read our post designed to help owners understand how to pick a suitable carrier for their cat to help make them feel as secure as possible.

Please note if you feel your carrier isn't suitable or may need replaced we do have a selection of donated carriers here at the practice which we happily give out for a small donation to charity.

Please LIKE and Share we would love to help educate cat owners on safe and low stress travel 🙏💕

Brrrr... it's a cold one this week 🥶 Whether your pet is snuggled up inside or wrapped up to brace all weathers, here are some of our top tips to keep them safe this winter ⛄️❄️💨

🐶 Wash/clean your dogs feet after pavement walks to remove any salt/grit which may irritate them.
🐱 Beware anti-freeze is extremely toxic to cats, while it's taste is appealing to them-ingestion can be fatal. Please be mindful when using/storing such products they are kept well away from pets. If you suspect your cat has ingested anti-freeze please contact us immediately ‼️‼️
🐰🐹 For small furries kept outside normally, please ensure their housing is free from draughts, wind and rain. Insulate and protect it appropriately and use pet safe bedding and heat pads to create a cosy environment. Otherwise consider moving their house to an outbuilding or indoors where they are protected from the extremes in weather.
🦮 Choose safe walking areas for the weather, don't allow dogs to play on frozen areas of water- as the ice can break very easily! Avoid areas where you and your pet may become stuck if the weather changes suddenly.
🐈 Outdoor cats may sneak warmth from vehicles under cars and their wheel arches, please check this area before driving off if you have outdoor cats in your neighborhood.
🐰🐹 Offer your outdoor small furries some more hay than usual, keeping warm uses calories!
🐕‍🦺🐈‍⬛ Please make sure your pets are microchipped: if they do become lost or in danger in this weather this gives them the best chance of them being reunited with you. There is lower visibility in bad weather, the nights are darker and cats may seek warmth in peoples sheds/outbuildings where they can become trapped.

🥶 REMEMBER- HYPOTHERMIA CAN KILL: make sure pets aren't inadvertently shut outside for long periods, use pet coats/jumpers as appropriate (breed specific), time and plan your walks- so you don't end out longer than planned in extreme temps.

Please LIKE and SHARE this info and spread the word to fellow pet owners ☺️
