*APPLICATIONS CLOSED*
Thank you to everyone who has applied for the position - we are currently reviewing all applications and will endeavour to respond to everyone by the end of this week.

We are looking for a special person to join our team at Tower Farm, Grimsthorpe. Initially 2-3 days per week with the option of more next winter. You will work alongside our vet nurse Clare in handling and caring for inpatients, assisting with veterinary procedures, maintaining the clinic, facilities and veterinary equipment and organising the pharmacy and equipment rooms.

We are looking for someone with a good work ethic, who is happy to take responsibility, show initiative and take pride in the standard of their work. Confident horse handling skills are essential and the successful applicant will work well in a lively, busy team with professional client communication skills and a sense of humour. You will be required to lunge and trot up horses outside for lameness investigations and vettings and may on occasion be asked to accompany our veterinary surgeons on calls.

In return, we offer staff discounts and benefits and the ability to work in a small, independent veterinary team with a good rate of pay and location. Please email Alex Lee for more details at [email protected].

Let’s talk teeth!🦷

Clara, a five year old mare, was found to have a lump under her jaw during a routine dental examination by Holly Grantham MRCVS. The lump was non painful and Clara was eating and behaving normally. On examination, all her teeth appeared fine. The lump was clearly not normal however and, suspecting a tooth problem, Clara was x-rayed at her yard. The radiographs showed thickened bone around the root of one of her lower molars – a sign of longstanding infection. Antibiotics alone are insufficient in such cases, and the only option was to take the infected tooth out. It was successfully removed at Tower Equine by Safia Barakzai FRCVS, our visiting specialist surgeon, who performed the operation under sedation and local nerve blocks with assistance from Alice Taylor MRCVS and Clare Feakes RVN. Clara was able to go home the same day with painkillers and antibiotics. She recovered well from her operation and subsequent checks by Alice showed the socket to have fully healed.

Clara’s case highlights the importance of regular dental check-ups for all horses, young and old.

Tower Equine offer a comprehensive range of dental services to our clients, so please contact the office to book in your dental exams and tooth rasps.

A collaboration between Tower Equine Veterinary Surgeons, consultant equine surgeon Safia Barakzai BVSc MSc DESTS Dipl.ECVS FRCVS of Equine Surgical Referrals and the team at Chine House Veterinary Hospital resulted in a successful standing left sided laryngoplasty (tie back) and laser vocal cordectomy (hobday) operation on Alex Lee's Towerequine Hullabaloo (Hugo) at Chine House yesterday.

Hugo, a 6yr old 17.2hh thoroughbred x gelding was first presented to Safia at the clinic at Tower Equine in early November. Exercising endoscopy revealed grade 3.3 left sided laryngeal function and the decision was made to refer Hugo for surgery. On 22 November Hugo underwent a successful standing left sided laryngoplasty and laser left/right vocal cordotomy and left vocal cordectomy performed by Safia under hospital conditions at Chine House. Three fibrewire sutures were placed and an excellent grade of abduction achieved, required for Hugo's intended purpose of eventing. Hugo has now returned home to Tower Farm for continued after care by the vets at Tower Equine, 4 weeks of box rest and a gradual return to full ridden work.

Thank you to Safia who provides an excellent surgery consultancy service for our clients at Tower Equine.

NEW Reduced Visit Scheme 2023

Unfortunately, due to rising costs, the Tower Equine Free Visit Scheme is being replaced by a flat rate visit charge of £15 incl vat for eligible calls within the scheme area. The same call-out days and areas apply and other terms and conditions are unchanged. Visits for single vaccinations that were eligible for a reduced visit fee of £15 will now be charged at £20 incl vat.

Although we appreciate that any increase in costs for owners is unwelcome, the charge of £15 incl vat is still significantly less than the normal visit fees within the eligible areas. Additionally, the existing reduced visit schemes in the Newark and Billinghay areas remain unchanged.

There are a number of reported cases of strangles in the Oakham and Melton areas.

Strangles is a bacterial infection that requires close contact, transmission by handlers or the sharing of contaminated water or feed buckets to spread. With sensible biosecurity measures, infection can be controlled on a yard and further spread prevented.

In addition, the new strangles vaccine, "Strangvac", can reduce both the risk of disease and its severity. Please follow the links below for further information and if you have any concerns please call our vets for advice:

Welcome Alice Taylor BVSc MRCVS!

You may recognise Alice from her student placements here at Tower Equine. Now a graduate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Bristol, we're delighted that Alice has chosen to join us on qualification. Having grown up locally, Alice is familiar with the area. In her free time, she enjoys walking her Sprocker Spaniel Nell and riding her New Forest, Blaze.

Great to have you back with us, Alice!

EQUINE INFLUENZA

There has been a recent upsurge of Equine Influenza (Flu) cases within the UK and Europe, with one case recently diagnosed in Lincolnshire.
Most of the cases tend to be unvaccinated horses imported from Europe and Ireland or passing through sales.
It is really important to keep your flu vaccinations up to date, and to ensure strict biosecurity and isolation of any new horses on yard.
All new horses should be housed away from direct contact with others and at a distance to prevent the airborne spread of droplets. An isolated stable or field is ideal. Isolation should be maintained for 2-3 weeks minimum, and those handling the new horses should change their clothing between groups of horses, use good quality disinfectant to dip boots and wash hands thoroughly.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding Equine Influenza please call the Tower Equine office on 01778 591082
