In Puppy Up we spend a whole chunk on handling!
It is SO important to teach your dog that ‘formal’ handling is all good!
Today we put this into practice as Sunny needs a course of eye drops!
Thankfully he already knows this format means tasty treats!!

And remember - REWARD YOUR DOG 🥰
‘HELP, MY LOVELY PUPPY HAS BECOME A TEENAGER!’
Check out one of my top tips to help your dog get through their pesky adolescence
Rule 1:
LET THEM BE A DOG!
There is a lot of info out there telling you to pile on the pressure and restrict your dog to within an inch of its life through their teens
Try not to do this where possible! We want our teens to fulfil their need to explore (SAFELY!) so they get it out of their systems 🤓
Remember:
🔹keep things easy
🔹set your dog up for success
🔹keep them safe
🔹keep them out of trouble
And mostly…
🔹REWARD YOUR DOG!
🐶
Thank me later 😉
Flo has something to show you!!
She is LOVING her new food, @myoscarsfarm.uk . It is a high quality cold pressed food, and you can use the code KASSIE50 for 50% (yes 50!) off your first order! It’s a no-brainer!

It’s not just dogs who can learn tricks!
Here’s Jemima learning to stand on her hind legs for tasty hay treats!
How cool is she! 🐰
Let’s talk recall - especially with those pesky teenagers!
We’ve all been there at one point or another, so how do we combat cloth ears in our dogs?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments!!
If you need help with your teenager, or training recall, drop me a PM!
🐾
Let’s talk reinforcement!!
So, when it comes to reinforcing (strengthening) a behaviour, we can do this two ways:
Positively = adding something good
Negatively = removing something bad
So thinking about dinner time in my house. It usually begins with some puppy dog eyes, maybe followed by Flo’s honking noises and a shoelace from Arch. This is followed by me giving in and feeding them!
So who is training who!?
The dogs have been POSITIVELY reinforced for nagging me (by getting a tasty meal) and I have been NEGATIVELY reinforced by removing the unpleasant and rather hard to ignore nagging from the dogs!
What examples can you think of where your dogs have trained you!?
🐶
Ever wondered how they train police dogs to detect narcotics!? You know, those dogs you see in airports!? Well look no further!
This is Sunny’s first session in a ‘passive indication’ which just means to freeze.
I’m using a £1 coin as the target (use a box/bucket if your dog might eat the coin!)
The aim is for sunny to put his nose near or on the coin. Every time he does, I’m throwing a treat towards the coin.
Then it’s a case of waiting longer and longer (half second increments) to increase duration of the indication.
I’ll be posting his progress over the coming weeks/months so stay tuned!
I also teach scentwork (active and passive) for those of you would would like to give it a go!
Post in the comments how you get on!! 🐶☀️
Today we had the pleasure of teaching at The Royal Veterinary College all things dog training!
The practical sessions involved the students teaching the dogs a novel trick, and didn’t the dogs love it!
🤩
Bit of freestyle Heelwork to Music in the UK with Sunny!! What a dude! 😍🤩 #puppy #redlab #puppyfun
Morning all! Kassie here!
Let’s talk recall - puppies are usually pretty good at sticking close to us on walks. Roaming far could come with risk so they tend to check in a lot!
It’s tempting to bother a bit less with training a specific recall because of this, but trust me! You’ll need it when they hit adolescence!
Instead of only calling you pup when you need to take them home, or call them away from something dangerous, I like the idea of practicing your recall throughout a walk, even when there is nothing around!
If you can get a snap response when they are young you stand a much better chance later on!
Happy training!
Sunny’s first demonstration at DogFest! What a dude!
He demonstrated how to begin a retrieve, using fun positive training! My criteria is to bring the toy straight back and put the toy in my hand, then he gets his favourite treat!
What fun activities do you do with your dog?
Kassie x
🧡
Training a passive indication!
1) present the @kongcompany to your dog. When they sniff them Kong, reward them.
2) reward for longer and longer sniffs/freezes at the Kong
3) cut small pieces of Kong and place them in hidden places. Reward your dog for finding them and holding a short freeze
4) add distractions such as moving or touching your dog
5) change locations! Try in your garden or on a walk
Have fun!
He’s still got it!
Archie got back in the ring this weekend to demonstrate some scentwork at DogFest!
Here he is showing a passive indication for a piece of Kong.
The aim here is for him to freeze when he sniffs out Kong to indicate to me where it is, we can then add in distractions and larger search areas to make things harder!!
Arch may be retired but he is definitely a pro when it comes to scentwork! 🥰
Drop me a message or email [email protected] if you think your pooch would like to try some scentwork!
Today I got to hang out with the gorgeous dogs at Al Mayya K9 Adoptions!
We worked on some basic training getting them ready for new homes. They mastered stay, lead walking, touch and settling on a bed.
We have Star, Athena, Yogi, Teddy and Leika all looking for their new homes!
If you can open your heart and home to a rescue dog full of love then get in touch with Al Mayya!
Well done guys, you all did brilliantly!
😍🤩
Archie update!
We have good news! Archie has been discharged from neuro for being the BEST boy and not getting any worse!
We have had a few months of stress finding out he has lumbosacral disease as well as some significant tears to both shoulders as well as his polyneuropathy but he is on the mend and remains in the best spirits!
He will now be resuming his stooging duty with a BIG smile on his face! 😁🥰
Thanks so much to Jeremy at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists, Benne at Windlesham Village Vets and Susanne at Paws 4 Rehab!
