THE INTERESTING (AND CURIOUS) CASE OF MAISIE THE CAT

Maisie presented as an evening emergency a few weeks ago to our vet Vicky after her mum noticed that she was very lethargic, sleepy, not keen on her food, and generally not well.

After a quick assessment and a blood test, Maisie was found to be severely anaemic. Her PCV (packed cell volume - a test that measures the red blood cells in the bloodstream - and an indicator of anaemia) was 9%, whereas the normal values for a cat are 25-45%.

The reason for this was a condition called Immune Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (IMHA) , where the immune system is attacking and destroying the red blood cells.

This was an extremely low value, causing Maisie’s tiredness and making it difficult for her to breathe. Maisie needed a blood transfusion to save her life.

Due to the lack of availability of feline blood products and the challenges in finding suitable feline donors rapidly, the very smart, quick, and creative thinking vet Vicky looked elsewhere to try and save Maisie’s life.

In comes practice pup Elek…. a two year old Hungarian Vizsla dog…. yep. A dog.
Amazingly, a one-off blood transfusion from a dog to a cat is possible in the case of a life-threatening emergency like in Maisie’s case.

This is to increase the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood in critically ill patients.

The procedure is called a xenotransfusion.
Elek was very patient when he donated blood, Maisie received her transfusion and following this, alongside other treatment for the condition, we are extremely pleased to say that two weeks down the line, Maisie’s PCV is now 28%, so back to normal.
Although there is a fairly long way ahead for Maisie, we are very optimistic about her chances to make a full recovery from this condition.

A very well done to everyone involved in Maisie’s care 😊

To celebrate Christmas but also a year full of success and accomplishments, we have decided to do something special.
Instead of the traditional Christmas party or dinner, we’ve treated ourselves with a day trip to the wonderful Christmas Market in Bruges.
Despite the unfriendly weather, the whole team thoroughly enjoyed the experience, from the traditional food and tasty desserts with unlimited waffels and chocolate to the amazing sights this beautiful city has to offer.

They are passionate about all things nursing and they are very keen to look after all our pet friends, be it for a consult, whilst they are being hospitalised for a procedure or when recovering from an anaesthetic.

Dawn and Geri have joined our amazing front of house team and are ready to meet and greet you with a smile and a kind word, be it over the phone, email, or in person.

Please join us in welcoming our new colleagues to the Swale Barn Vets Team 😊

NEW SERVICE AVAILABLE AT SWALE BARN VETS! 🐾 🐶

We are proud to announce that after extensive training, we are now able to offer Laparoscopic assisted Gastropexy.

A gastropexy is a procedure in which the stomach is sutured to the abdominal wall to prevent twisting in the event of a bloat.
The condition called gastric dilatation and volvulus is life threatening and the risk of twisting could be dramatically reduced by performing a gastropexy. This procedure (surgical attachment of stomach to the body wall) is the most effective means of prevention. Large, deep-chested breeds are more prone to the condition and include Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Weimaraners, Irish Setters, Gordon Setters, Standard Poodles, Basset Hounds, Doberman Pinschers, and Old English Sheepdogs, however, any dog can bloat, even Dachshunds and Chihuahuas.
Gastropexy can now safely and minimally invasive be performed at Swale Barn Vets.

For more information, call us on 01795608820 or [email protected].
