It's all arrived! πŸ₯³ Hungry residents both here & with Foster carers enjoying their Brambles favourites, whether they prefer wet or dry...or both! πŸ˜‹

Babydog milk will be welcomed by orphaned πŸ₯Ί hoglets who love it! They have it syringe fed, then it's mixed with Royal Canin Puppy Mousse so gradually the meaty mousse replaces the milk & they can feed themselves! πŸ₯³ saving me midnightπŸ₯±, 3am πŸ₯±πŸ˜΄ & 6am feeds😴😴

Thankyou very much once again to Brambles Pet and Wildlife for their generous prize! Their food really is my 'go to' stock for poorly πŸ¦” & hoglets; they've got the recipie just right! πŸ‘ πŸ˜‹

Thankyou to Ollie Bongo's Pet Essentials for my 'Mrs Hogwinkles @ Ollie Bongo's 'day yesterday! Met & chatted to lots of lovely Faversham residents & visitors to the town. Very pleased to hear a lot of Faversham's gardens have got πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦” residents &/or visiting πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦” coming to feed! Faversham does have a decent population & it's heartwarming to hear of people's care for them to protect & encourage them to breed safely.

Also, more people are aware now of the horrific injuries strimmers & sharp garden tools can do...just look first to see who is snoozing in that quiet undisturbed cornerπŸ¦”πŸ˜΄... before you hack it to bits/level it to the ground...& massacre everythingπŸ¦”πŸπŸ¦”πŸžπŸ¦” calling it a home😭 ☠😭

Thanks everyone

It has taken me too long to post this. Last winter, when all the Autumn Orphans came in, due to Wrens Hill Hedgehog Rescue closing, I was overwhelmed with calls. Having built up our partnership & then closing down, I struggled to cope with the number of referrals.

Fortunately, Thorne Hedgehog Rescue C.I.C also was ready to take in more having really set up big time during 2022. Unlike Winter 2021, I could leave Ashford & any πŸ¦” nearby etc to Lisa. Thankyou Lisa for your support & keeping me sane! (Just!) β€πŸ‘

I am pleased to be back operating as I was, based in Faversham & aiming to cover the town & it's outlying villages. I have a shed & the back up of a spare bedroom for an 'I.T.U.' for the very small ones. That is it. I have a few secure gardens with Foster carers for the permanently disabled πŸ¦” who would not survive in the wild & a very keen Foster Carer, Sam, who runs 'Hilton Hogs' & is a very kind & supportive back up for me when I have too many or go on a break away, rare but much needed when it can happen.

I am pleased to say I again, have a new, sole bank account for Hogwinkles & am trying to fund the Rescue as I did before, successfully I might add since Winter 2017. Any donations from finders, especially when 'their' πŸ¦” is returned, are much appreciated to cover some of the costs of medicines, equipment & food. I also sell some donated items & anything I can't sell, or any food donated the πŸ¦” don't like, (not much but I gave up on huge size dog biscuitsπŸ˜‰) goes to Happy Endings (Market Stall).

I don't feel comfortable asking for πŸ’·πŸ’° all the time, anything received is much appreciated but I took on this venture as I love πŸ¦” & wanted to do something worthwhile having retired early. The initial equipment & set up was funded by me & the rescue I was training with as a Foster carer. In Summer 2019 she closed (retired) & Hogwinkles was up & running, flying solo.

Spring 2021 was the start of the partnership with Wrens Hill until last Summer.

Autumn 2022 saw the build of a new purpose-built brick shed, funded by hubby & I as we will have the use of it after I finish my πŸ¦” 'life'. (Probably πŸš‚πŸšƒπŸšƒ if he has his way!)

It's now Spring 2024...& the babies & night feeds😴 will be arriving soon so time to do the paperwork, accounts & clearing out in readiness, perhaps just for another couple of years, until I'm too old!

Thanks again to all my followers, donators & supporters. You have kept me going, especially this last year.

New πŸ¦” are coming in with issues coming out of hibernation, being found out in daylight struggling to find food & of course, the always dreaded start to garden tool injury season, especially πŸ’€ strimmers😭

If you need to use one, LOOK πŸ‘€ first, then cut a foot+ high (above where πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦” will be nesting) & then LOOK πŸ‘€ AGAIN. It's such unnecessary & awful suffering & so easily avoided πŸ’”

The photo below is of 'Garietta', found out on a country road last week when it was warmπŸ₯΅.
Dehydrated, starving (hence the dip in her neck behind her head) & starting to give up. FlystrikeπŸͺ° all over had started so she's having a medicated bath. In the last week she has done well & eaten loads, thanks to a careful driver & 2 caring young men who cared enough to stop & check her before it was too late, to see if she was still alive & then phone a rescue. Thanks so much to themπŸ‘

Thankyou again to Ollie Bongo's & their customers as your πŸ’°πŸ’· pays for such medications & her πŸ₯« of Brambles πŸ˜‹

This is 'Prickly Pete', admitted on 27th Dec @ 206g, had usual Lungworm & Capillaria (worm eggs) ...now 675g & can go home next week in this mild spell. Once internal parasites dealt with by the correct medications, they pack on hibernation weight quickly with the right food & crate rest. Pete put on 470g in 4 weeks; well done Pete!πŸ₯°

My 'ready to go home' residets πŸ¦” are so pleased to see this milder weather! πŸ₯³ More releases this afternoon & over the weekend! One of the best πŸ₯² parts of the job!

***WINTER RELEASES***

A lot of people are surprised when I call them and tell them their hedgehogs are ready to go home over the winter months!

Over wintering is no longer considered best practice.

Although there are some small variations between rescues regarding the temperatures and weather conditions that they prefer to release around, research has shown that as long as certain conditions are met, a hedgehog released during milder spells in winter (above zero day and night for roughly 10 days) have as much chance of survival as one that did not enter rescue.

Hedgehogs are instinctively wild and the stress of captivity is enormous. A big, healthy hedgehog that is ready to go back to the wild does not want to be enclosed and their behaviour changes. They trash their hutches, pace and scratch relentlessly trying to escape which puts them at risk of physical injuries. It's so stressful that they can actually develop conditions such as Coccidia and ringworm which then need treating, prolonging their stay and putting them at even further risk of other stress related health issues. It can become a vicious circle!

Every resident is monitored and tested regularly and I already have one confirmed case of Coccidia in a huge, otherwise healthy hedgehog that was ready for release some weeks ago. He will stay until he is treated and his poo samples are clear.

In addition to following the temperature and weight minimums (650g), hedgehogs released here at Thorne over winter will only go if they are provided with a hedgehog house, bedding material and daily food and water. They may choose to wander off and find their previous nests, or prefer to go and make their own but they have a warm, dry space to come back to and will know where to return to for food and water if they need it.

So if you are called to collect the hedgehog you found and are concerned, rest assured that it is in their best interests and they have the best chance of survival. We spend considerable time and money caring for and rehabilitating our hedgehogs and would never release just because we need the space and/or dont want to keep looking after them!

With all of this in mind, I am arranging the return of some 65 hedgehogs over the coming days and Ellie is the first to go home. She arrived weighing just 248g at the end of November, carrying a high burden of capillaria and lungworm. She leaves today healthy and weighing 761g ❀️

Good advice (as usualπŸ˜‰) from Lisa.
Until I trained with a rescue 7 years ago (it's now long retired ) I had no idea about parasites etc! πŸ¦” It's a wonder, with all the damage πŸ›£ us humans do as well πŸš™πŸš›πŸ›» they've survived at all! πŸ₯Ί
Poor species needs all the (trained) help it can get!

Having problems with Facebook, think linked to problem Brambles Pet and Wildlife have had for a while.
Please just bear in mind if anything odd/wrong posted or any strange contact from this page you weren't expecting.

Have tried to follow their guidance to correct then it says it's not familiar with my phone! (& that's all that's it's ever been done onπŸ˜–)

Really didn't need this after busiest weekend ever with newby πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦”!!! 😭

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be very very very careful about poisonsπŸ’€ & insecticides☠ you put out in your garden! They are LETHAL to other wildlife πŸ¦”πŸ¦”πŸ¦”& may also harm someone's pet!

I am trying to save the life of a 2nd πŸ¦” that came in with the same symptoms this week from 2 caring finders who are near neighbours. I doubt I can😭 (I have consulted my vet to check i'm doing everything possible) The first one died & it's πŸ’© sample revealed no parasite burden. Both had no injuries & were otherwise of a decent weight (200g+) & condition & should have survived.

These leaflets, together with news of the poor πŸ¦” fate are about to be posted in the area affected to try & identify where the problem originates but the message applies everywhere. Few people like🐌 & even less πŸ€ but indiscriminate & careless use of toxic substances cause so much suffering! Follow instructions, use the recommended containers/dispensers etc. Or hire a professional. I'm not an expert obviously but just please, be extremely careful!!!!

This is so upsetting 😭 for the finders & me...& we are putting the info through doors locally to try & save the πŸ¦” that are still around there before they too follow the same terrible fate☠
