Fun for hours getting the ball out of the monster's tummy...

Whew what a week this one always is in town!
Ruth & Foxy are in the shop to welcome you until 2pm today... then we have our usual opening hours until the Hop Festival Weekend where we are open 9-1 on the Saturday and 10-2 on the Sunday.
Please please be sensible this weekend with your four pawed friends; we absolutely stand by you knowing your dog best and how they feel about loud music etc - but please consider how crowded the town centre can get and the risk of paws being stood on and dogs being tripped over, and just how overwhelming being surrounded by so many knees must be!

Please read Finn's story , he desperately needs a forever home and has the potential to be an amazing dog , we know the kelpie breed well as our Jacko is a kelpie ,we wish we could could help more , but with a diva collie and our Kelpie Jacko it's just a little too much at the moment .
At our anniversary pawty tomorrow we will be raising funds and will talk to anyone about the amazing work that Kelpie Welfare (rescue) UK do , please try to help this special lad and we are sure you and Finn will never look back !
A sad announcement and a plea for help 🙏
Last week we sadly saw our Fantasctic Mr Finn being returned to us. Like his lovely owners and the ones before that, we are absolutely devastated for him but there are still some issues that he is still struggling with and that need to be sorted out, it was the best decision for all concerned.
I am really hoping we can get Finn to where he needs to be but I am finding it very difficult with so many dogs in kennels long term and not being able to function efficiently due to a really lengthy and bad bout of sciatica on top of my other debilitating health issues. Next week we should start work with our trainer but Finn is really struggling with not having enough to do in kennels.
He’s an exceptionally busy boy that needs a fine balance of physical and mental activity but also quality rest, which just isn’t happening in kennels as he’s finding it stressful. Finn can be claustrophobic and panics within an enclosed space which causes him to resource guard. This can be with anything he feels is important to him his space, the car, food, person etc. He can escalate very quickly, has subtle warnings and he has bitten frequently.
He is a very intelligent and loving boy and has a wicked sense of humour but finds it very difficult to trust, especially if someone is apprehensive and nervous of him, which can cause a very tense chain of events. I realise this is painting a very dark picture of Finn but whoever takes him on must go into this with their eyes open and a plan.
Finn needs a saviour, a highly experienced person who is confident, patient, understanding and kind. Someone who will give Finn a job to do and who will work on his fears. We know 100% that this is achievable because he became extremely happy and settled when he was in foster with Jem for all those months last year.
He needs to stay with that special person forever because I’m not sure he could stand yet another move. He has been a Kelpie Welfare dog since he was 9 months old, if you include his breeder, owners, foster carers and kennels then he has moved homes 9 times, this is too much and not suprising that it has eroded his trust. I want to make it clear that this is nobody’s fault and some dogs can cope better than others, but it has to stop before he’s beyond repair and he gives up on humans all together.
I’m appealing to anyone out there who is up to the job and wants to take on a project dog, Finn needs you!! For his one big problem (resource guarding) he has a dozen wonderful qualities. With the right person he will become an incredible dog that is capable of great things, he just needs some very clear boundaries and a handler who is experienced with resource guarding. He cannot stay in kennels forever so we are praying for a miracle 😕🙏
Please contact Kelpie Welfare UK if you can help. The original post can also be shared from this page.

Don't forget to fill up lots of water dishes to go out with the bird feeders...and even if you don't have a bird feeder!
Water is so important for all the wildlife in the long hot days as everything dries out...
12/08/2024
There's no denying that it's hot today! So can I recommend a cooling bandanna.... simply soak and scrunch in water, and use the velcro tabs to secure around your dogs neck...or if they are proper fidgety and don't like something round their necks, or are too small for one to stay on...wrap it around their tummy (when walking it's especially useful to pop it under the harness to help it not fall off!).
Stay hydrated and alert to the signs of heat exhaustion - in humans as well as pets...
But you can spot signs of overheating before it becomes harmful. You know your dog better than anyone.
Are they breathing more heavily than usual?
Do they have less energy?
Are they less playful than normal?
Are they panting more?
Are they stumbling or laying down?
If so, they could be starting to get too hot. Stop moving, give them water and find shade. Keep an eye on them until they're recovered.
Simply perfect little treats for training and saying "hey, I'm home, I love you"

We will do a post with all entrants going live on our Birthday Weekend and let the public judge and vote for the winner

Special visit today from the most pawsome cuties....I'm sure they were all plotting together as the dogs of Ollie Bongo's and the best ways to celebrate at our Birthday Bash.... after all what do the humans know?!
08/08/2024
We've had a bit of a shuffle around...in this heat your dog may not want to get all snuggly in a bed...but a nice mat is still fab for increasing comfort without overheating...there are a couple more sizes upstairs; and we have many many more beds upstairs

Ollie is a 19 year old blue and white welsh collie. Ollie was taken to the vets years ago as a pup to be put to sleep after children antagonised him whilst he was hiding from fireworks, unfortunately he bit one of them! Luckily for us all, the nurse on duty felt sorry for the poor little pup and 'kidnapped' him, taking him to Butterstone kennels. Ollie stayed at the kennels for many years, rarely leaving his block until a young lad came to help out at the kennels. The lad's parents had collies and when they heard of Ollie's plight they took pity on him, deciding to visit him weekly and take him out.
This carried on for around a year until the kennels owner sadly died. Ollie's future was yet again in doubt as many people thought he was not be suitable for rehoming. The lad's parent's worked tirelessly to teach Ollie to adapt to civilian life, and in August 2011 Ollie came home to Faversham to live with his brothers Joey, Gino and Harry.
Ollie embarked on a lucrative modelling career and started baking dog treats to raise funds for other less fortunate dogs. 7 years ago Ollie moved to Herne Bay and purchased the Barkery on the Bay.
In August 2014 Ollie embarked on his biggest venture , setting up Ollie Bongo’s Pet Essentials , and in true Ollie fashion his thoughts are with other animals needing loving homes.
In May 2017 Ollie opened his Boutique in Herne Bay and in June 2017 Ollie's K9 Services opened in Whitstable .
A true beacon of light to all rescue animals needing forever homes, Ollie is proof that no matter how long you may wait your forever family will find you!
