๐ŸŽƒ Happy Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ

Here are some tips and tricks for keeping your pets safe and happy this Halloween:

1. Take your dogs for a walk before trick or treating beings. The Halloween outfits can be scary for dogs, even if worn by someone who they know ๐Ÿ•
2. Keep sweets/ chocolates and pumpkins out of reach from your pets ๐Ÿฌ
3. Keep candles out of reach from your pets ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ
4. Make a cosy space for your pets such as a den which can help them feel safe.
5. Keep Halloween decorations out of reach from your pets ๐Ÿ‘ป
6. If your pet is nervous of trick or treaters ringing on the doorbell, leave the sweets outside of the front door with a โ€œhelp yourselfโ€ sign ๐Ÿซ
7. Keep your cats inside once it gets dark ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›
8. Avoid leaving your pets at home alone if possible ๐Ÿ
9. Have some background noise on for your pets such as the radio as this can help to distract from the fireworks ๐ŸŽ†
10. If answering the door to trick or treaters, make sure to keep your pets away from the door to prevent them from escaping ๐Ÿšช
11. Make sure all cats and dogs are microchipped and the details are up to date.

What should they eat? ๐Ÿน

Feeding Hay & Grass - High quality, dust-extracted hay or fresh grass should make up 85-90% of your guinea pigsโ€™ diet. You should make sure this is freely available and replace it with fresh hay every day.

Nuggets - A small amount of tasty, high-fibre nuggets should be fed as a supplement to feeding hay or grass to ensure that your guinea pigs get all of the vitamins and minerals they need. High in โ€˜beneficial fibreโ€™ to promote digestive health, they also contain prebiotics to help with healthy eyes, skin and coat. Importantly, they also prevent selective feeding โ€“ unlike muesli-type foods where small animals just pick out the high starch/sugar components, leading to all kinds of health issues.

Treats - Grass-based treats can be fed in small amounts to your guinea pigs. Treats can be hand fed to help with bonding. Forage mixes are good for sprinkling on hay to help to encourage natural foraging behaviour and treats can be left around their housing to keep them occupied.

Fresh Greens - These can be added to your guinea pigsโ€™ diet for some variety and to provide additional nutrients. Examples of greens which are suitable for feeding daily include: dandelion leaves, plantain, strawberry and raspberry leaves, cauliflower leaves, hawthorn, celery leaves, green pepper, kale, romaine lettuce and spring greens. ๐Ÿฅฌ

Fresh Water - Fresh water should always be available. Change it daily and check it regularly during the winter months to ensure it hasnโ€™t frozen. ๐Ÿ’ง

It's day three of Guinea Pig Awareness Week 2024 - Nibble, Nourish, Thrive! and they're jumping right into the importance of a healthy diet for guinea pigs! Stay tuned for more tips and info throughout the week, and don't forget to show your support by liking, commenting, and sharing their posts. Let's make the best one yet!๐Ÿ’š

As exotic pets, guinea pigs require a specialist diet to meet all their nutritional requirements. Wild guinea pigs naturally eat a diet of grasses, plants, vegetables and crops.

Guinea pigs are herbivores which means that they are entirely vegetarian and need high levels of fibre to keep their digestive system working correctly, their gut should be in constant motion with two types of fibre (digestible and indigestible). They get this fibre mainly from high quality feeding hay which should make up the bulk of their diet.

If guinea pigs donโ€™t get the right amounts of both digestible and indigestible fibre, it can rapidly lead to serious health problems. Their teeth are designed to continually grow so need to be worn down naturally by fibrous, abrasive foods to avoid dental problems such as overgrown teeth which can be very painful for them. Hay is good for dental health as the gnawing action required to eat it helps to wear down their teeth.

Your guinea pigsโ€™ diet also needs to be supplemented with plenty of vitamin C, as they lack the enzyme needed to produce it. Vitamin C is important for healthy skin, joints and blood vessels. Vitamin C can be found in good quality, high fibre nuggets and certain fresh greens and vegetables.

Never feed your guinea pigs with human food โ€“ chocolate and dairy products are particularly dangerous and citrus fruit can upset their sensitive tummies. Also avoid potato, nuts, onion and related vegetables, rhubarb, tomato leaves, buttercups, daffodils, poppies and tulips. ๐Ÿน

Indoor piggies! ๐Ÿก

Guinea pigs can be kept indoors, but it is important that you gradually get your guinea pigs used to common household sights, sounds and noises.

All areas that your guinea pigs move around in should be fully proofed to ensure that they are safe and protected from hazards. For example, all electric cables should be covered to stop your guinea pigs from chewing on them and any house plants should either be safe for guinea pigs or kept out of the way. You should also make sure the flooring is non-slip as slippery floors can cause injury and stress.

Your guinea pigs should be kept away from radiators and their space should be kept well ventilated, the temperature for your guineasโ€™ housing should ideally be kept at between 17-20 degrees Celsius โ€“ some warmer areas of your house may be too hot.

You should have a toilet area for each of your guineas which is separate from their bedding area. Itโ€™s also important that you provide plenty of enrichment through toys, platforms, hay and grass plants.

Happy day two of Guinea Pig Awareness Week 2024! ๐Ÿน

Today, are sharing how you can create a thriving environment for your fluffy friends. Letโ€™s jump right into making your guinea pigsโ€™ home perfect! ๐Ÿก

Outdoor piggies ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Guinea pigs can be housed outdoors. They just need to be protected from hot weather in the summer and poor weather in the winter.

When the weather is particularly bad, donโ€™t put them in an outdoor run. As theyโ€™re so small their bodies are really close to the ground, so theyโ€™ll easily get wet. Instead, pop them inside or in an outdoor shed โ€“ all guinea pig proofed of course!

In better weather, keep your guinea pigsโ€™ housing and run out of direct sunlight and fill it with places to hide. Guinea pigs are prey animals so like to feel secure and that they have somewhere to hide away.

Keeping guinea pigs outdoors means they may encounter predators, such as foxes. Keep your guinea pigsโ€™ housing secure by using good quality wire and bolts. Also, certain garden chemicals, such as pesticides, can be poisonous. Make sure your guinea pigs are kept away from any areas that could contain these chemicals.

Guinea pigs donโ€™t like cold weather, so in winter, move their accommodation somewhere warmer, such as into a shed, porch or utility room and give them plenty of extra bedding to help keep them nice and cosy.

Don't forget to like, comment, and share their posts with your fellow guinea pig lovers! ๐Ÿน

Guinea pigs are small, but with big personalities. By understanding their behaviour, you can make sure theyโ€™re happy and have a great relationship with them.

They communicate using several noises, including the โ€˜wheek-wheekโ€™ call โ€“ a sign of excitement or to find a friend โ€“ and a low โ€˜purringโ€™ sound, which they make when they are feeling content and chilled out. They also make a series of short โ€˜putt-puttโ€™ noises when they are exploring.

They like to play, so make sure there are plenty of toys for them. Play makes them exercise, which is good for their physical health and for keeping them happy and healthy.

They are natural foragers, so hide some food and your pets will enjoy looking for it. For example, try hiding some snacks around their hutch or in their feeding hay. Foraging mimics their natural behaviour and prevents boredom.

They need constant access to hiding places where they can go if they feel scared. In the wild, they live in groups and several groups may form a colony.

They scent mark by rubbing their chin or cheeks across things, which helps keep their home smelling familiar and reassuring. This is why itโ€™s important to make sure that you transfer some of the old bedding back into their accommodation when cleaning. They also drag their bottoms across the ground to leave scent secretions as messages to other guinea pigs.

They are most active during dusk and dawn but they are awake for up to 20 hours of the day. This means they need constant access to food, water, companion guinea pigs, safe hiding places and toys to keep them occupied, as well as an exercise area with tubes to tunnel along, shelters to hide in and deep areas of hay to forage in and nibble on.

๐Ÿˆ Nurse Dematt Consults ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

This is Mia, the Maine C**n who came to us this week for a short dematting session with the nurses ๐Ÿฉท

She had a few large matts under her arms and along her tummy which were removed. She was a star for this and was loving all of the fusses โญ๏ธ

Matts can get very sore and pull on your pets skin, they can also prevent proper temperature regulation and hide nasty parasites such as fleas โš ๏ธ

We offer a short, in consult dematting session with one of the nurses for ยฃ11.56. This is great if there are a few matts which need removing and a nice brush through is required ๐Ÿถ

If your pet requires a longer session to tackle more of those stubborn matts, this would be ยฃ17.16 ๐Ÿฑ

If you have any questions regarding our dematt consults, please call us on 01394 271112 ๐Ÿ“ž

Grass Seed Season ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒพ

Itโ€™s that time of year again when we see a lot of dogs with grass seeds in places they shouldnโ€™t be!

Grass seeds have sharp pointed ends which allows them to get tangled up in the fur and burrow themselves into the skin.

The most common places to find grass seeds include:

๐Ÿพ In between toes and pads - causing lameness and soreness.
๐Ÿ‘‚ Ears - causing head shaking or tilted head.
๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿผ Nostrils - causing sneezing and nose bleeds.

From these areas the grass seeds can migrate into the body and cause major problems.

Please make sure to check your dogs coat and especially between the toes after each walk to prevent this from happening. It can also help to keep the fur on your dogs paws cut short so grass seeds can be found more easily ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒพ
