🐾Baileys Blog🐾

Poor nurse Sammie and her family have been under the weather, so to keep Bailey amused Sammie set up some activity feeding!

Bailey loved snuffling out her treats and it kept her amused for ages!

Activity toys offer mental and physical stumulation and enrichment. Directing your dog's energy into play with toys can prevent or help resolve such problems as digging and chewing on furniture, shoes and anything else they can get hold of!

We wholeheartedly agree with this! Their carrier can be their bedroom and you can always pop a gorgeous throw over it to help it fit in with your decor 🐈‍⬛😻🐈

⁉️Who leaves their cat’s carrier out in your home? 🤔

🙌🏻 We do! We make is cosy, & it lives where Olive likes to be & to rest 😻😴

❓Why? Because vet visits & occasional transport are inevitable throughout a cat’s life. Being taken away from their safe place, & taken to new & stimulating social & physical environments can be stressful 🙀

👍🏻 🧺 By having the carrier as a safe place, cats can feel confident & have familiarity around them, & this can really reduce distress 😺

💭 The carrier being freely available also provides a cosy hidey hole, which all cats appreciate ✅

✨ And it’s the first step in training for comfort for vet visits & transport 👍🏻

💡So, if you’re not making your cat’s carrier a safe & cosy permanent spot for them in the home, what are you waiting for?! Go set it up 😉🧺😻

29/11/2023

We have been notified that a poisonous plant is being used as decoration in a pot plant that can be purchased in garden centres and possibly florists.

The pot plant is Livistona rotundifolia (footstool palm; also known as Saribus rotundifolius) and pots of these plants are decorated with three fibrous balls. The balls are the skeletonised fruit of Cerbera odollam (su***de tree, pong-pong). Within each fruit is a kernel that is extremely toxic; a single kernel can be fatal if eaten and poses a risk to both pets and people. The toxic compounds in Cerbera odollam are cardiac glycosides, which are also found in foxglove, oleander, lily of the valley and other plants.

If you have these fibrous fruits in your pot plant, remove them and dispose of them safely. It you are worried your pet may have eaten the plant material contact Animal PoisonLine (01202 509 000)or your vet immediately.

We love measuring blood pressures in cats because it’s easy! They relax whilst we measure. There’s no needles involved.

If it’s higher than we would like, we will recommend a blood test to check their vital organs and we will examine their eyes like an optician!

It’s all part of getting old but with regular blood pressure checks, we are thankful we can help them before there’s too much damage like permanent blindness or longterm kidney damage.

Want to help your pets enjoy this festive season? Try some of these great tips from Linda 🐾😻

🐱🐶 Up high, down low, in a cosy corner, under something, in a quiet room…

With the festive season approaching, let’s prepare our pets quiet places to rest and retreat to! 🎄 🎁

🤔 Also, let’s make sure we are getting them used to being confined away from the action in a relaxed and comfy way - slowly & surely (rather than just shutting the door on them and leaving them inside frustrated while the party goes on without them! 😾)

Here you can see examples of:
👍🏻🐱 my cat choosing to sleep up high, where she can see what’s going on and feel safe
✅💤 my dog resting quietly in a room I have chosen for her to settle in upstairs (we’ve spent lots of time preparing for this, initially with me hanging around in the room being boring while she snoozed, then with me coming and going from the room, then with me closing the door for short periods, then gradually building up the time she can comfortably rest there)
😻 my cat choosing an under-the-bed comfy hidey-hole (actually for the dog, but, well… cats! 😹 )
🐶😴 my dog snoozing in her thunder nest, which has become her safe place, that she can see everything, but not have to engage, or be interacted with

❓How will you set your pets up for comfort & safety during the busy festive season?

💭 Top tip, for pets that have not yet been trained to relax away from the busyness:
– consider long-lasting, engaging, safe activity feeders
– foraging, problem-solving & brain games
– aim for pets to feel like they’ve got the better end of the deal by being safely confined!
– use cat- or dog-specific pheromone plug-ins
– play loud-ish relaxing/boring background music to damp down noise
– making sure guests know that pets are not to be disturbed or interacted with
- ensure that pets have plenty of time, attention, walking & resting for the rest of the time

🍷 🍫🙀 Remember, it may not always be safe to have pets present when lots of people, food and noise are around, and pets may be overstimulated or uncomfortable (but unable to use their behaviour to tell you), or you may be distracted and not notice. Preparation and setting up for success in advance is key 💪🏻 🙌🏻

🐾Feel Good Friday 🐾

This is Frankie. Rescued from Battersea in September. He was rehomed as they got a new kitten which he took a dislike to as Frankie prefers to be the only cat in the house. He now has a wonderful life as the only cat in the house with his new owners and has settled in beautifully. He came in to see vet Katie for a check over and as you can see he was very at home in the consult room! 💙

Do you remember the beautiful Tawny Owl we had brought in?

Well this is the most fabulous news to share with you today! 🦉 The owl was released very close to where it was found after the amazing team at Moyles Court had got her fit and healthy again!

A break in the wet weather gave us the opportunity to successfully return this TawnyOwl to her territory. She had originally been sent to our hospital from a Veterinary Practice having been handed in by a member of public who found her on the roadside, probably an RTC. We X-rayed and assessed the owl and found that she had sustained a wing fracture and a graze to her eye. Wing fractures require expert treatment which we at Wildlife Rescue are able to provide. After treatment, rehabilitation and reassessment she was ready to go back to her home. Release video in comments, it’s only 11 seconds as she went like a bullet !

Introducing all the weird and wonderful human happenings in the most positive way is key as soon as possible.

With fireworks rapidly approaching introducing Bailey a few weeks ago to the sights and sounds positively was crucial to make the next couple weeks as good as possible. Here she is watching the tv but there are desensitisation CDs out there too!

This approach isn’t just unique to fireworks either, got a new baby arriving soon too?! Reach out for more advice or check out https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/understanding-your-dog/sound-therapy-for-pets to find out more!

Did you know not only are our team super amazing at caring for your pets they are also incredible bakers!! 😋

In the lead up to Christmas as daylight hours reduce we all enjoy watching the Great British Bake Off 🎂🍰🧁

We each support and rally for someone on the show but when the contestants time comes to an end, it also signifies the moment we bake in honour of them!

Here’s a sneaky peek at some of the amazing delights the team have baked this year so far!!!

🐾Baileys Blog Wednesday🐾

Sickness and diarrhoea isn’t uncommon when we bring a new puppy into the home. It can be due to a change in diet, stress with all the new happenings and other factors.

Unfortunately for Bailey yesterday she had both sickness and some explosive diarrheoa so of course she was quiet and feeling very sorry for herself 🤒

She also wasn’t eating or drinking so she came in to see vet Jordan as it’s important puppies don’t go without food for too long.

Fortunately for Bailey with an injection, some probiotics and special tummy friendly food, she has responded well and today we cross our fingers hoping she continues to improve! 🤞
