Two years ago, we were getting ready to open our doors, which finally happened on 27 September 2017. Although Bunyami, had a retail background, I had never even worked in a shop before and didn’t even know how the till worked on that first day. The shop has come a long way since then.
Firstly, our product range has been refined to reflect what local customers need and want. This has meant that, our dog food section features healthy brands such as Forthglade, Canagan, Symply, Autarky, and a new grain-free range called Exe Valley, which is proving very popular. Our raw food, Albion Country Bowl has loyal followers too. Cats in the neighbourhood tend to favour Wellbeloved and Canagan.
We quickly learned that wildlife supplies were going to be in demand, in an area with woods and plantations. We always enjoy hearing about the wildlife that customers see in their gardens. Bunyami’s homemade bird tables and hedgehog houses have sold well. He uses reclaimed wood as far as possible. The first bird table was mostly made from our old front door! We buy most wildlife food by the sack and either sell it loose or package it ourselves.
One aspect of the job we love, is seeing people’s dogs and fitting them for new coats or harnesses. When we took our late, lamented retriever Honey to the chiropractor, she told us about Perfect Fit harnesses. These come in 3 parts for optimal fit, and are good for the skeleton, and also for training. We started stocking them in the spring, and people come from all over Dorset for fittings.
