It always makes me sad that people don’t take this seriously and update their details with the microchip company!

❌ PROSECUTED FOR FAILING TO UPDATE DOGS MICROCHIP ❌

On 8th of May 2024 a Neighbourhood Warden was driving on the A6076 Causey Rd, Stanley when they saw a dog next to the road with no owner present and no one in control of the dog, narrowly missing traffic.

The warden pulled over and managed to secure the dog and a member of the public told the Warden the dog lives in a nearby estate.

The warden secured the dog in the van and entered the estate of Argyll Court, Kip Hill DH9 8RD. The warden scanned the dog for a microchip which came back registered to the breeder of the dog.

As the warden was on the phone to the breeder, a woman approached her claiming to be the owner of the dog.

The warden informed the defendant she would be issued with a 21 day notice requiring her to update the microchip within 21 days.

The warden checked the microchip on the 2nd June 2024 and it had not been updated.

Kirsty Herdman, 39 of Argyle Court Stanley now has a total of £314 in fines and costs to pay.

In the UK, it's mandatory to microchip dogs and register their details on an approved database by the age of 8 weeks.

What does a reactive dog do on his day off? He chills out with one of his girlies. For a dog who is reactive outside he can be very loving indoors. Which makes it so annoying that he is bad outside. And Freya adores him. Back to the training this week!

If your dog doesn't want to go out for a walk in the cold/wet/dark they don't need* to. That is all.

Delighted to confirm that I am now working with The Wilson Veterinary Group to run their puppy classes at their surgery in Bishop Auckland. The first course starts on Sunday 9th February at 5.30pm.

The course is four weeks long and covers the basics of training as well as advice on house training, nutrition, exercise and leaving your puppy when you go out. Your pup will also learn that the vets is a good place to be and make your visits (for you both) less stressful. Above all, your pup will have fun and learn to socialise in a relaxed and controlled environment.

If you have a new puppy and want to book a place contact me by email for details. Places will be limited to ensure that each puppy and owner gets time with me directly.

Reactive Rupert Training Diary day three… video and some thoughts.

On the day that I took Rupert and Edie out for a long walk it made a difference. I posted the video and watched it back several times. Here’s what I noticed.

1. At the start of the walk, Rupert is not really relaxed. He and Edie are excited to get out. But they settle quickly and walk nicely.

2. It doesn’t matter what I am using on Rupert. I am waiting for a new Halti head collar for him. Using a harness or a collar or a slip lead hasn’t made any difference.

3. We were walking along and a man and an English Bull Terrier walked out of a side road and away from us. Even though us owners exchanged “hellos” Rupert ignored the dog completely. (See video of the bit afterwards)

4. When we did come across a group of three dogs, two Bedlingtons and a Whippet, both my two looked interested. But made no sound.

5. It wasn’t until the dogs started moving towards Rupert that he went over threshold. And when I asked him to move away he did initially but a pull on the lead to take him away set him off worse and he did start to bark and lunge.

6. He did settle back to his base line quickly afterwards.

I’m determined to help him get past this behaviour. Or at least to learn to ignore dogs. He did when he was a puppy, and when he was at dog shows so I know he can do it

Coming from the South East of England, I’m not used to having very cold weather or snow that hangs around for long so I’m having to change my ideas about Edie and Rupert’s exercise during the cold snap up North.

I’m making sure that they are wearing a coat when they go out and aren’t walking for too long on cold pavements. If they are, I’m washing their feet when they come in just in case they have walked through salt or anti freeze. My dogs have just a single coat and get cold very quickly. I’ve not used dog boots yet but it might be something I’ll try if the weather stays cold.

Here’s a few tips just to remind you that your dog can suffer in the cold just like we can.

Stay warm everyone!
