Merry Christmas! -

It’s my first local newsletter since I moved up to Durham and I’m emailing you because during 2024 I’ve either talked to you, worked with you or just met you randomly at some of the events I’ve been to this year.

When you are a dog trainer you meet lots of dogs. All breeds, shapes, sizes and temperaments. You meet them as puppies or young dogs and you follow them through their lifetime especially when you become friends with their owners. Over the course of the years you see your doggie friend get older and slow down. And you love them like your own.

Today, my dear friends Julie Archibald and Daz Smith said goodbye to a dog I knew very well. I met Perry as a tetchy young Jack Russell living with his staffie x mate, Spike, but hating any other dog he met! I started my social sessions in Worcester Park and Perry quickly became my go to stooge dog! He would show owners what it was LIKE to meet a dog like him and also how to LIVE with a dog like him. I called him my Lieutenant as he really did patrol the group with vigour. Edie and he always acknowledged each other but she never got in his face and they seemed to work well together.

Despite moving away, I kept in touch with Julie and always knew what Perry was up to. He got promoted to Admiral as he got older but to me he was my little lieutenant, the dog that I didn’t change because he was FUN no matter what he did.

I may be a trainer. I may work with your dog for a short while or a long time. But I can tell you that I remember them all. And I miss them as much as anyone when they are gone.

Thank you Lt. Perry for being a one in a million dog. For helping so many owners and dogs. I send my love and sympathies to his family and I know that he and Spike will be reunited over the rainbow bridge. 🐾❤️

Due to the weather warnings we’ve taken the decision to postpone our Santa Paws event until 30th December. Yes it means Santa will have to hang around until after the big day, but come along and have some fun during that “between” time before 2025 starts!

Meet the Greyhounds from Greyhounds Going Home too!

Dog Walking Etiquette 101: 5 Essential Tips for Happy Walks! 🐕

1. Respect Personal Space
➡️ Not every dog is social! Always ask before letting your dog approach others. Look out for yellow ribbons or gear that indicate a dog needs space. 💛

2. Leash Up in Public Areas
➡️ Even the friendliest dog should be on a leash unless you're in a designated off-leash area. This ensures safety for everyone, including wildlife.

3. Pick Up After Your Dog 💩
➡️ Always carry waste bags and clean up after your furry friend. It's courteous and keeps the environment clean for everyone.

4. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings 👀
➡️ Keep an eye out for other dogs, wildlife, joggers, cyclists, or kids. A quick reaction can prevent unnecessary stress or accidents.

5. Control Excitable Behaviour
➡️ Keep your dog close when passing others to prevent jumping or barking. Reward calm behaviour to reinforce good manners.

Come along on Sunday!

Our hearts are broken for little this little man, and his family, tonight 💔… WE NEED AN EARLY CHRISTMAS MIRACLE FOR 14 YEAR OLD RODNEY 🙏🏻🎄❤️

We have had to pick up Rodney today as a total emergency - his dad is very unwell and can no longer care for him 😔💔

⛔️ There’s NO way that we can put him in a kennel - we literally cannot do that to him 💔

💫❤️ SO! We need the power of our community, especially our Staffy lovers, to come together and do your thing to find Rodney an urgent 5* senior Staffy loving foster home!!! 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

🐱This time, we DO know that he has lived with a cat previously, so we WILL consider homes with dog savvy cats for him!! ✅ He has never lived with a dog, or children, so we want to keep things as familiar for him as possible to keep his stress levels down, so a dog/child free (under 10) would be best for him 💫

He will need lots of company as this is what he’s always been used to ❤️

We will provide all you need, and cover vet bills (he’s in the vets tomorrow - any donations for his care are so so appreciated) ❤️

We just desperately need to get this lovely little old boy into the right home who can give him the love and TLC he needs ❤️🎄❤️

This article is written by a dog owner not a behaviourist. And he’s so wrong. These sort of articles just make owners feel guilty for having a dog that can’t go off lead. He should have written about people who DON’T have their dogs on lead.

Do what’s right for your dog!

❄️ Winter tip ❄️
Check your dog’s paws and dry them thoroughly after they've been outside. This is especially important with long-haired dogs, as they are prone to snow compacting between their toes and turning into ice balls, which can prove very painful. If they are agreeable, you could trim the long hair between your dog’s toes to help prevent this.
