Just out of interest I decided to go over our exercise records today to see how consistent we've been since starting in-hand hacks at the beginning of May following an injury.

Since May Nods, Sunny and I have walked 104 miles together! That made my day πŸ˜‚

We all enjoy our walks together so much and it's definitely helping to keep Noddy healthy and mobile.

Really useful to be able to easily flip through my to review my notes on what we've been up to!

Pablo and Dolly, what a sweet friendship they have..they do almost everything together

Whilst Pablo was relaxing during his Emmett treatment with me Dolly came to doze right beside us, leaning her head on me and enjoying the vibes, I think all of us were enjoying the peacefulness together!

Pablo enjoyed a balancing and relaxing treatment ahead of a long pleasure ride on Sunday. The Emmett Technique is a safe and gentle muscle therapy which uses light finger pressure at specific points on the body to stimulate the release of tension.

Ideal vs Natural

Whether we care to admit and accept it or not, riding horses is not natural. The horse wasn't made to be ridden, or to carry the weight of a rider, or to carry more weight on their hind to engage and lift which is what most riders strive for. The body maintains as much muscle mass as needed to function normally, and for horses that means spending most of their time grazing and covering a large distance without a rider, with more weight loaded onto the forehand.

They spend most of their time walking with their heads down and noses in the grass. They run with heads high and only expend as much energy as needed to get away from a threat or fight off a rival. This, to a horse, is natural. Anything we do with them is far from it.

No matter how much of what we do with horses is for their longevity and health, in the end, it isn't natural for them and we must remember that.

When we sit atop a horse and find ourselves getting frustrated, thinking that we're asking something so simple, or making such small demands, stop and remember that you have zero right to be up there. You are granted a huge privilege and it is your duty to make things easier and quieter for the horse. You gain nothing by creating stress or being domineering unless what you're seeking is a complete breakdown of trust and willingness.
Additionally, the horse is not born understanding your cues and does not carry the burden of understanding your wants, needs, dreams, and hopes.
He knows what is comfortable and uncomfortable for him, what makes him fearful and nervous and what makes him relaxed, what is physically easy, and what is physically difficult.

Whatever answer he gives you to your ask is the correct answer, despite what your opinion of it may be. Read that again.

Whatever answer he gives you to your ask is the correct answer, however, it may not be the answer your looking for at the time. That said, it is the answer you need to better support and guide him to give you the answer you want. His answer is always right, like it or not.

Your horse ONLY knows what you have taught them, which is based entirely on what you know, and how well you know it.

It is also important to remember that our ideal is not natural, and our ideal requires much more physical and mental fitness on the part of the horse. The natural posture and physical build of a horse is not that of carrying a rider in collection, so achieving this requires more from the horse, and that cannot be ignored.
You would not demand a non-active person one day run a 20-mile marathon or enter into a weight-lifting competition, so why then do we ask too much of our horses and then punish them when they tell us they cannot do it.

Understanding the difference between natural and ideal is the first step to not placing the demands of the horse we want, on the horse we currently have.

~~~~~~~~
To reiterate, no animal, not a SINGLE one, exists for us.
Not. A. Single. One.
To Take an exert from The Outermost House by Henry Beston:
"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creatures through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion.
We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man.
In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear.
They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth”
It was lovely to meet and treat Radie recently, who was very interested in what I was doing to him and clearly loved being involved in my chatting with his owner Chelsea and her friend Wendy!
The Emmett Technique is a gentle and safe complimentary therapy which uses specific points on the body to encourage muscles to let go of tension.
It can be used to help alleviate a range of common equine issues such as tight/sore backs, restricted movement, uneven head carriage, sensitivity to girthing, arthritis and stress and anxiety.
Due to the quiet, gentle nature of Emmett it is often tolerated by even the most sensitive horses. To find out more about Emmett and how it could support your horse, have a look at my website (link in bio) or call/text/WhatsApp 07968 952662 for chat. 🐴✨
Bea ❀️ is one of the herd of rescued horses . She is in her early 20's and has been at the sanctuary for 6 years. Her exact history is unknown, but it is thought she was originally a polo pony, and she bears signs of having had at least one foal.
When she arrived Bea bore some nasty physical scars from mistreatment which have taken years to heal, she is also blind in one eye. She soon formed a close friendship with another mare, Faith, who sadly passed away 4 years ago this Christmas. Bea then became the matriarch of the herd and patiently looks after new mares that arrive at the sanctuary.
Still wary of humans, Bea doesn't like to be handled or fussed over, but at River Hart Horses she gets treated with the respect, patience and love that she deserves.
Bea has recently had a bout of lymphangitis in one leg, which is settling down again but has caused some compensatory tightness in other areas of her body where she has been carrying herself differently.
After a gentle introduction, spending a little time with her and getting her used to me being with her and touching her, I found Bea to be very receptive to my Emmett Treatment and she was very relaxed by the end. I feel especially privileged when a horse who has been so let down by humans in the past is willing to let me in. The grace of animals can be truly humbling.
