Blue-green algae are most commonly found in non-flowing fresh water such as lakes or ponds during the warm weather but can also occur at other times of the year. They can float on the surface of the water or be bottom dwelling.

Exposures in animals usually occur when they drink from water bodies where the algae have bloomed. Dogs are often affected when they swim in infested water bodies or groom themselves afterwards.

Although not all species are toxic, many blue-green algae produce toxins that can have effects on different body systems. Clinical signs therefore vary depending on the toxin(s) involved, but can include gastrointestinal signs, liver failure and neurological signs.

If you know or suspect that your pet has come into contact with blue-green algae, we recommend that you seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 3055 055.

🐾 Are your pet's microchip details up to date? 🐶🐱🐰

🐾You would be surprised how many we come across who have not been updated or in some cases, have not been registered at all!

🐾When your pet is microchipped by us, we register the chip to the details provided by you, however not all implanters do this.

🐾If you change telephone number, or move house, you need to log in to the database where your chip is registered and update this information.

🐾If you are not sure which company your chip is registered with, we can scan your pet and let you know.

It's Good Friday!🐥
Easter wouldn’t be complete without lots of chocolate. This of course means an increase in cases of accidental ingestion in pets, particularly dogs.
The Animal PoisonLine and Veterinary Poisons Information Service see a huge increase in call numbers relating to chocolate at this time of year. Chocolate contains two related chemicals that can be toxic to pets - theobromine and caffeine. The amount of caffeine and theobromine in products will vary due to natural differences in cocoa beans and the formulation of the products. Common signs associated with large consumption of chocolate in animals include vomiting (in animals that can), diarrhoea, hyperactivity and restlessness, increased thirst, increased heart rate and tremors.
Although chocolate poisoning is very common in pets (especially dogs!) and frequently makes them ill, fatal cases are rare.

🐣 Wishing all our customers a very happy Easter! 🐶🐱🐰
❗️We are closed Good Friday and Easter Monday.
💊 Please don't forget to order any food or medication by Wednesday lunchtime!
🍫 Make sure you keep all chocolate goodies out of reach of your furry friends.

If you have a Pet Care Plan with us, did you know that it includes urine and faecal testing as part of the 6 monthly health check?
🔸️The faecal test checks whether the worming treatment is effective.
🔸️Urine testing can help identify problems in the urinary tract, such as infections or crystals. It can also help identify metabolic issues such as diabetes.

Ask reception for sample pots.

29/12/2023

The new guidance from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) states that a physical examination is required at the time of prescription where a veterinary surgeon prescribes:
💊antibiotics
💊antifungals
💊antivirals
💊antiparasitics
In all but exceptional circumstances.
🩺This means that we are unable to provide prescription flea, worm and tick treatments unless the Vet has carried out a physical exam and written a prescription.
Even a change in anti-parasitic product requires another physical exam under the new rules.

We understand this change may cause some disruption to pet owners, we thank you for your patience and understanding.
In many cases, the annual booster vaccination will provide the perfect opportunity for the Veterinary Surgeon to prescribe anti-parasitics for the following 12 months.

⭐Next up on our A-Z pet poisoning campaign is the letter X⭐

Xylitol is a sweetener that can be found in many products marketed as ‘sugar-free’. It is most commonly found in chewing gums, but can also be an ingredient in some baked goods, peanut butters, ice creams and chewable/sweetened medications.

So far this year, we have taken 560 calls involving xylitol.

It is important to stress that a small quantity of xylitol can cause significant complications in dogs and we recommend that advice is sought after any exposure.

We have been notified that a poisonous plant is being used as decoration in a pot plant that can be purchased in garden centres and possibly florists.

The pot plant is Livistona rotundifolia (footstool palm; also known as Saribus rotundifolius) and pots of these plants are decorated with three fibrous balls. The balls are the skeletonised fruit of Cerbera odollam (su***de tree, pong-pong). Within each fruit is a kernel that is extremely toxic; a single kernel can be fatal if eaten and poses a risk to both pets and people. The toxic compounds in Cerbera odollam are cardiac glycosides, which are also found in foxglove, oleander, lily of the valley and other plants.

If you have these fibrous fruits in your pot plant, remove them and dispose of them safely. It you are worried your pet may have eaten the plant material contact Animal PoisonLine (01202 509 000)or your vet immediately.

⚠️It has been brought to our attention that there is a newly released film titled 'Anatomy of a Fall' (Original title: Anatomie d'une chute) that is currently being screened in cinemas across the UK⚠️

During the film, a dog is intentionally administered human medications and then subsequently given salt water to induce vomiting.

We want to stress how dangerous this can be to animals.

These methods can cause further toxicity, which may worsen the animal's condition and can lead to severe effects.

Inducing vomiting should ONLY be carried out by a veterinary professional in a safe environment where the animal's condition can be monitored, should any complications arise.
