If your dog prefers a trained professional, please message ๐๐พ
Lovely little Molly had been living feral before being rehomed by her current owner. She has no idea how to groom herself and isn't completely trusting of human contact so her owner has been unable to brush her.
This resulted in her whole coat becoming knotty clumps which were luckily loose enough to tease out with an undercoat comb and leaving it smooth and shiny ๐ธ
I think she'll be a lot happier now ๐ป๐พ
Although we go on about this every year, don't leave your dog in the car...don't walk in extreme heat...be aware of your flat faced breeds being more likely to suffer.... This still happens and I have personally witnessed many unavoidable deaths in my career that just couldn't be saved
So... prevention is obviously the key but be aware of immediate first aid for heat stroke should you ever need to use it ๐พ
Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?
One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...
We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!
But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.
You should:
๐งGet someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
๐งPour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
๐งNB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
๐งDo not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
๐งMove to a cool, shaded area
๐งPrepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car
In studies they found that:
๐
International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
๐
Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
๐
Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
๐
No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with coldโwater immersion.
๐
Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
๐
Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion
The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

This boy ๐ป๐ฅฐ๐พ
Looking forward to hearing your stories ๐๐พ
Poppy and Cookie had their 6 weekly groom last week, Yes...all that floof in just 6 weeks!
Shows how important it is to brush our cats, especially this time of year ๐ป๐พ
Gorgeous Max had a pamper day ๐ป
He had one little mat by his armpit that required clipping and a few knots in his trousers that combed out beautifully
A good de-shed was needed as you can see โบ๏ธ
He didn't want to leave the table when I'd finished, such a good boy ๐บ๐พ

Did you know that by just a year old 80% of dogs will have some degree of tartar build up and gum disease. Cleaning those teeth early will prevent tooth decay/dental extractions and a hefty vets bill in the future. I can visit, give a full dental check/clean and advice moving forward for the future ๐๐ชฅ๐พ
