Cold weather and lack of sunshine coming in through the windows?

Usually January has a bit more sun than we are seeing at present which is generally enough to warm seeds sown in our mini propagators but with loads of overcast weather recently our chillis are VERY slowly germinating.

If you don't have a heat mat just do this simple trick, after your heating has been on and the radiators have cooled slightly, simply pop your pots/propagators etc on or near a radiator. This will be enough residual heat to warm your compost and kick off the germination process.

Just don't forget to take them off after a short while so you don't cook your seeds and/or seedlings.

The first of our aubergine seeds has germinated 🌱 hopefully the rest should start popping up very soon.

Mrs Seed Craft loves this time of the year when I start filling the windowsills with small pots and lots of seedlings 🫣

I see it as a small (and temporary) price to pay for delicious fresh food in a few months time.

Who has planted their January seeds?

I'll be honest and admit I am behind, but it doesn't matter as there's plenty of time, you could even sow them in Feb if you wanted. January is a funny month, often fairly quiet but this year there's been a lot going on.

Mrs Seed Craft and I are busy preparing your February boxes after we have finished those I'll get out to the office/shed and get some seeds sown.

If you want to get involved in our little club and support a small business, head over to the link in our bio and use code INSTA50 for a saving on your first subscription box.

Lemongrass

The first lemongrass shoots are starting to appear after about 10 days since sowing.

These are on our kitchen windowsill, the soil is kept slightly moist and I only water by adding small amounts of water to the saucer that the pot sits in.

When they get bigger I'll transplant into individual pots for growing on. As a perennial it is best to keep lemon grass in containers if you plan on overwintering it at the end of this year.

I've been walking by this house recently and I absolutely love that they have used their front garden as an allotment plot πŸ’š

Granted it's a decent size which not many houses will have but I'd absolutely love a full plot sized front garden, I'd even plant fruit trees along the front for passers by to help themselves to.

What would you grow in a space like this?

If you ever have an excess of garlic here's a little tip to peel multiple cloves quickly and easily.

Simply trim the end off each clove, chuck them in a large sealed container and give them a good shake for a couple of minutes. Then simply pick out the peeled cloves, you might need to pop the lid back on and give it a second shake but this certainly makes life a lot easier.

With our peeled cloves we pop them in a small food processor with some olive oil and blend before freezing in to ice cube trays and then store in a sealed container in the freezer for easy use when cooking.

Rainy days are the best days to sow some seeds indoors in the warmth.

I've spent the morning getting all my chilli seeds, aubergine and some lemon grass sown.

6 varieties of chilli seeds all from recent or previous subscription boxes, aubergine Bonica from our December box and also lemon grass.

Usually our kitchen windowsill is pretty sunny and that mini propagators keep some heat in, heat from cooking also helps. Though if it's a day like today when there's not much sun and the kitchen is a bit cooler I will move these close to a radiator just to keep the soil temperature high enough to speed up germination.

You can of course use heat mats and grow lights if you have them but I always get our chillis sown in December/January with natural light and warmth from being in the house.

Chillis (particularly the hotter varieties) require a long growing season so starting them now is the ideal time to ensure the best results, though sadly even that isn't guaranteed as the very slow start to warm weather in 2024 definitely hampered the results of chillis this year and we only had real success with jalapenos which being milder are easier to grow in cooler temperatures.

- Romanesco cauliflower AMO125

Although this looks like a success, the reality is the terrible growing season this year has meant these didn't grow quick enough and are now starting to mature very late.

The issue is these are still very small and the now cold weather means they won't put on a decent size before the cold weather takes hold of them.

Chalk up the failures up and make note of the reasons, you might not do anything different the following year and the end result can be perfect.

broad bean Aquadulce

These hardy little plants have started to put on a little bit of height, they should survive most of the cold without protection but if you're expecting heavy snow I would be inclined to give them a little protection just to make sure they don't get crushed.
