As part of the EU-wide GrASTech project, researchers at SRUC’s Dairy Research and Innovation Centre have modelled the effect of precision livestock farming technologies on improving fertility and milk yield and the subsequent impact on carbon footprint. For a 225-cow average Scottish dairy farm yielding 8000 litres/annum, introduction of an automated heat detection and health monitoring system was expected to reduce the calving interval from 410 to 390 days and increase milk yield to 8500 litres/annum. Total emissions from milk production fell by 2.5% from 2,520,977 to 2,457,829 kg CO2e and in terms of emissions per kg of output, the carbon footprint fell 8.27% from 1.33 to 1.22 kg CO2e/kg fat and protein corrected milk, demonstrating that improvements to technical performance can help lower a farms carbon footprint and increase profitability. SRUC’s Crichton Royal Farm recently invested in four calf verandas to help accommodate increasing numbers of dairy heifer calves.
Verandas are a low-cost, flexible and easy way to solve housing issues, without the requirement for planning permission. These roofed, mobile pens can house up to 14 calves and are used in combination with an igloo, providing shelter from adverse weather, fresh air and a snug, draught-free lying area. Groups of calves are housed separately, ideal for managing the risk of disease between different age groups. The verandas are on wheels making them easy to muck out. They can be moved to a clean area on the yard with the calves still enclosed to muck out the existing site.
Each veranda came at a cost of approximately £7,500, with an addition £5,000 cost to lay a solid concrete base. With calves remaining in the verandas for a total of nine weeks, that means each veranda rears 80 calves per year and over a 10-year period the investment works out at £15.60/calf. A small labour cost should also be factored in for assembly which was about 8 hours per unit.
Farm Manager Hugh McClymont says “It is an excellent system that anyone could manage without complications of high-tech equipment. When feeding the calves twice daily, you immediately see who is drinking or not as the case maybe. After nine months of operation the verandas have performed extremely well and are easy manoeuvred to allow frequent cleaning out”.

SRUC’s dairy farms have been embracing selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) since 2016. On average 75% of cows across the three herds are now dried off with teat sealant only, a saving in antibiotics of around £9/cow. Cows do not receive antibiotics at drying off if their last three milk recordings show a somatic cell count ≥11,000 and ≤99,000 cells/ml and there has been no clinical mastitis in the last three months of lactation. Mastitis cases of dry period origin (those occurring during the dry period and first 30 days of lactation) are only around 1%, well below the 1 in 12 target or
