The future of our sport lie in the hands of these wee people!
One of our aims at Strathmore Highland Games is to support, develop and encourage the next generation of young athletes. This has been a long term commitment that the committee has been dedicated to for a number of years.
On Games day we are delighted to encourage youth cycling and running on the track. In partnership with Elizabeth Low School of Highland Dancing our highland dancers start from little t***s age with their Pas de Bas. Our junior solo piping competition is a great starting platform for young pipers to build their confidence and experience, and we’re delighted to continue to encourage the next generation of Heavy athletes tossing their slightly smaller, lighter caber.
This week sees the start of our School Highland Games programme which we run in partnership with Active Schools Kirriemuir. Over the course of the next two weeks a 1000 school children will get the opportunity to join in with Highland Games activities and four different events. This week we welcome 15(!!!) tug of war teams from 9 schools in the local area to our school Tug of War competition at Glamis Castle. This is living proof that what we’re doing is working, the enthusiasm in the children is huge this year as many of them have been taking part in our events since Primary 1. The skill level is also huge, which shoes they’re learning, and listening and have a drive to be Highland Games athletes!
Watch this space to see who comes out on top, and remember to shout even louder for our young competitors on Games day….let’s keep Highland Games going for future generations!!
