Don’t let flystrike be an issue this summer!
Get flystrike prevention for your bunny with the Pet Health Club!
Not sure what flystrike is?

It’s a serious condition that can be fatal to rabbits. It happens as a result of flies laying their eggs on a rabbit’s fur. Flies do this when the fur is dirty or damp, and it’s usually the fur around the rabbit’s bottom that is affected. The eggs hatch into maggots and these maggots eat away at the rabbit’s skin, which can lead to severe infection and in some cases, death. It’s preventable with regular treatment and ensuring your rabbit’s hutch is clean and their bottom is clean!

Robert is pictured here visiting a beautiful newborn foal a few weeks ago!

This foal was born to AI after a successful synchronisation programme. This involves scanning the mare by ultrasound, to establish where she is in her cycle, then administering hormone injections to ensure ovulation coincides with the timing of insemination.

Here, Robert is carrying out the first foal check, recommended within 24hours of birth, to make sure all is well with both mare a foal and, most importantly, that the foal has received enough colostrum. We have had several lovely foals born across Lochaber this year (both AI and naturally) and they are all doing well! ❤️🐴❤️

Ticks are out in full force at this time of year, and they've got their eyes on our pets. 🐶 These little parasites are disease-spreaders, capable of giving your dog Lyme disease, Babesiosis, and more. Give us a call for the best products to prevent them biting!

Due to new prescribing laws rolled out by the RCVS, our vets may need to examine your pet prior to prescribing. During the appointment we can run through the various options and prescribe the most appropriate parasite treatment for your pet.

Every year during May, the veterinary profession celebrates Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, proudly spearheaded by the British Veterinary Association. In 2024, the BVNA are celebrating 20 years of campaigning to raise awareness of veterinary nursing.

Veterinary Nurses are the heart of veterinary practices, providing vital care to our pets and support to Veterinary Surgeons.

Throughout this month we'll be posting pictures of our wonderful team of nurses and we'd love it if you could share some love with them too. 🐾💚

🎖 LifeSaver Award 🎖

Brave Tigger was an angel and lay perfectly for his blood to be taken to save a life again last week. This will be his last time as a blood donor as he is now too old to donate. Do you think your pet fits the bill?

Blood transfusions are lifesaving and we often need donors in emergency situations. If you'd like to volunteer your pet to be on a list of potential donors please get in touch, we'd be delighted to hear from you!

Our donor criteria:
For your dog to be a blood donor, they must meet certain criteria. Your dog’s welfare is always our priority and so for them to become a lifesaver, they must be:

🌟 Fit and healthy
🌟 Between one and eight years old
🌟 Weigh more than 25kg
🌟 Have a good temperament
🌟 Have never travelled outside of the UK and Ireland
🌟 Not on any medication

In addition to meeting our donor criteria, we are looking for dogs who are confident and happy being handled. They should enjoy meeting new people and be fully comfortable coming to the vets. Please call us to find out more!

🌟This months meet the team is our Veterinary Surgeon Annabel 🌟

Annabel has been with us here at Crown Vets for 5years now having moved from Angus with her husband and young family to run a small croft near Roy bridge. She has a menagerie of pets and livestock to keep her busy at home (and that's not including the kids!)

Annabel graduated from Glasgow Vet School in 2008 with her Veterinary degree as well as an intercalated BSc degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare from the University of Bristol. She chose to specialise in companion animal medicine early in her career and gained a lot of experience working in busy, city based practices. After a 2 year stint working in BC, Canada, Annabel returned to the UK to start a family.

Annabel is particularly interested in small animal surgery including orthopaedics and has a passion for pain management and rehabilitation including physiotherapy techniques and acupuncture. Annabel also runs a Behavioural Medicine referral service diagnosing and treating behaviour issues in cats and dogs. She can also often be found visiting local schools and kids groups, inspiring the vets of the future!

Last week our Vet Robert helped out with the Argyll SERC endurence ride at Nevis Range. 🐎

At the endurance ride the Vet inspects the horses prior to the competition to ensure they are fit to take part. After ther ride the horses are reinspected, asessment of the heart rate and trotting to ensure they are in good health in order for them to pass. Any horses that sustain any injury will be treated or checked over by the ride vet.

Between the beautiful weather and incredible views it made for a fantastic day out for all. 🏔️

Easter pet safety tips 🐣
🥚 We all know how poisonous chocolate is to dogs. If you're planning an Easter egg hunt, ensure that every egg is accounted for and keep your dog safe during the hunt.
⛔ Keep hot cross buns away from little paws; these contain raisins, which are highly toxic to dogs.
🍭 Sugar-free sweets and baked goods can contain xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs if ingested
🍖 You might be thinking giving your dog the Sunday lunch lamb bone to chew on sounds like a nice treat, but it's a big no. Cooked bones can cause blockages and splinter inside your dog's stomach.
If any accidents happen and your dog does eat any of the above, contact your vet immediately.
