🍄 Mushroom Toxicity Case Study 🍄
Meet Nevis!
Nevis suddenly started showing neurological symptoms a couple hours after a walk in the woods. He was twitching and wobbly on his legs and looked very anxious! His owner brought him straight in for assessment and when asked if he could have eaten any mushrooms she immediately went back to the area he had been walked to gather any they could find.
We sent images of the mushrooms they found to Veterinary Poisons Information Service who have a mycologist who can advise on the species of mushroom and likely toxicity. Luckily, in Nevis' case he was able to identify one of the mushrooms and inform us that his symptoms would be short lived and he would not have any long lasting effects. After some TLC in our Hospital overnight, Nevis is now back to his normal fun loving self!
There are several mushrooms which if ingested can cause serious illness in our pets and now is the time of year we see them! NB Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, lack of coordination, tremors, hallucinations, vocalisations, disorientation, agitation, and seizures. If your dog shows any of the above please seek veterinary guidance asap!
