I can reveal that we are staying in the stunning Manor Barn via East Ruston Cottages for the Dog Friendly Magazine review. I wish I could tell you all about the trip so far, but you will have to wait for the review! I will tell you though, it's stunning.

Being vulnerable is one of the bravest things you can do.

It's something I have done myself, and I've watched a fair number of women do the same - but we always apologise for crying. The circumstances are all different; feeling overwhelmed, someone has let them down or have been cruel, we have lost someone close to us (four legged or two), or, as I'm rapidly finding - for absolutely no reason at all (cue me ugly crying in my kitchen for no particular reason, thanks perimenopause!)

It's human, but we apologise for doing it. Maybe we don't want to make people feel uncomfortable, or we are taught that we have to be strong, or that we think that it's wrong for us to cry when there are people going through worse.

Regardless, being vulnerable whether it's needing to cry or admitting you are struggling and need help is BRAVE because it is so very hard to do, and it isn't something we should apologise for. And whenever I have seen someone cry, or if I have cried myself, the only thing that I have seen is an outpouring of love and empathy.

In a heavily curated world where we tend to only see the highlights of peoples lives, it's easy to think we are failing. But we are all humans, just trying to muddle through.

So to all those women who have cried in front of me, thank you for being brave.

And just remember, when all else fails, there's always dogs ;)

Does your dog do something which surprises people? Not in the 'omg that dog just stole the entire sausage box of M&S sausages' kind of surprise😂

I was chatting with Debbie from Redhound for dogs yesterday and we were talking about the incredible Bagel who is wowing everyone with his gundog expertise - not a dog you would be expecting to do dummy retrievals in with the labradors and spaniels! He also loves water (he really isn't very whippety!) and canicross with his humans.

It got me thinking though, how much we sometimes underestimate what some dogs can do based on their breed (even if it's a cross breed). Scout once won a fastest dummy retrieval at a country fair too - and I remember quite clearly the looks of disbelief. And Bertie is actually brilliant and scent detection (and not just for treats) - he's done a few scent courses and he blows my mind.

So I'd love to know - does your dog do something which surprises people??

Why is it called The Tapas Spread and what is it? Well let me explain...

When a pet brand asks to see my pricing options, I send them across a personalised pricing proposal (which has got lots of compliments!). In it there are client testimonials and work, details of how the shoot works, how I help and of course the pricing menu.

When I was creating the menu, I put together options for the needs of a pet brand based on what I have been asked to do over the years - a single big shoot isn't always needed! Because I named it a 'menu', I laid it out like an actual menu (I love going to restaurants but very rarely get to go any more so this is the closest I get!)

So you have:

🍽️The Amuse Bouche: for when you want to dip your toes in the water or just need a small amount of images for a very specific product or service. It's a short shoot with a small amount of images.

🍽️The Starter: Great if you are launching a new product or, if your social media needs a boost or for creating some amazing marketing for something like a trade event.

🍽️The Main Menu: A full shoot with a good bundle of images to boost your website or brand launch, more time and dog models as well as the possibility of two locations. This is a great one if you are starting from scratch.

🍽️The Tapas Spread: I created this last October when I listened to clients and understood that they needed something which would give them some flexibility. This option spreads both the costs AND the shoots over the year. The payments are set up over a period of time, but you can have your shoots whenever you like in the 12 months. It's now THE most popular option, I would say 90% of my clients choose this. Of course you can pay up front too!

There are also 'Side Dishes' for optional extras like a blog post or inclusion on an email to my subscribers. Are you wondering 'what about desserts'? Well surely a gallery of awesome images is the icing on the cake? 😉

Want to know more about how to work with me? Drop me a message or an email to [email protected] and you might get to see the famous(ish) Pricing Proposal!

I wasn't going to do it this year...I was umming and arring about it, especially as I'm am going to be removing the gift voucher option from the website.

I love doing private client shoots, but I haven't got time to market both these and commercial pet photography. So this will probably be the last year I do this kind of huge discount! They will be limited and it will be first come first served on the discounts. They can be used for yourself or I can send a voucher and shoots will be in the Lake District only and will be valid for 6 months.

Want in? Best set your timer! Kerry x

One of the things I talk about a lot on my masterclasses is the thing I get most exctited about in photography - light!

Getting to grips with understanding how light can effect your images is probably more important than what camera you have as far as I'm concerned.

Case and point, these two images were taken moments apart; one has drama and atmosphere, the other feels like a snapshot.

I task I give anyone on my classes is this; next time you are out with your dog and want to take a photo - move around - take the photo from different angles and see how the light changes. Don't have a willing dog? Try with something like a mushroom or a flower. Start to 'see' the light and how you think it will look before you even raise the camera.

Do you think you will use this tip? feel free to tag me if you do!

....I'm a start up and don't have the budget.

Here's the thing - if you don't ask how much it costs - how do you know?!

I've worked with multiple startups on their imagery, which means their brand immediately looks and feels professional and in turn increases sales.

I absolutely understand that professional photography can be a big investment, but it might not be as big as you think! I have created packages where you can start small with the amount of images so that you are able stand out from any competitors and attract your ideal client while you build your brand.

Believe me, the sense of pride when you see your website and social media looking pretty darn fantastic with professional images is priceless.

If you are ready to bust the myth that you can't afford a professional shoot, drop me a DM or an email to [email protected] and I'll send you over a pricing proposal. No hard sell, I want you to want to work with me because you know its the right time, not because you feel like you are being pressured! Kerry x

When I attended Edition Dog Live this year, I saw a brand called Whippa Snappa and of course the name drew me because it was similar to whippet!

I was blown away - this ingenious bandana is embedded with insect repellent to keep fleas and ticks away from your dog..

It has something called IR3535 woven into the fabric, a substance that's been around for over three decades and is inspired by a natural occurring amino acid. It has been declared by the World Health Organisation and other agencies as safe for pets and people alike so it shields your dogs without harming it’s health or the environment AND they don't harm the insects which a lot of other products do.

The bandana designs are gorgeous, they are thin, but feel high quality and have a reflective strip on them too. The repellent remains effective for 80 washes for bandanas, and 30 washes for harnesses, with no need to reapply.

I’ve had concerns about the highly chemical ways to avoid ticks and fleas on my dogs so I’m really looking forward to seeing how I get on with these!

I present to you exhibit A of working on a pet brand photoshoot - you will always have a story to tell afterwards 😂

A few months ago I had the pleasure of working with Waggy Woofers - an independent dog shop (not pet shop!) who wanted to create some personal marketing and social media materials. There were a few great stories from this shoot, including my thieving little whippet Shadow who I caught in the act here! To find out what it's like to work on a shoot with dogs, pop over to the blog to read more! I'll pop the link in the comments.

Should you ever work for free?

As I sat down to write this, I remembered that the postman had been and went to check what had arrived. I was so touched to find it was a Pawsome t-shirt from Amber Lights in Oxford with a lovely thank-you note.

The reason why I was touched is that I wasn't expecting the t-shirt - it was a thankyou from Amber for a recent photoshoot, which I had offered to do for free.

I came across Amber's page after she purchased my furdography for beginners ebook and her cause instantly resonated with me.

Part of what she is trying to do is open up conversations around homelessness, and in doing so is raising funds for Homelessness Oxfordshire.

The reason it resonated was because when I was 16, and doing my GCSE's, I was classed as homeless. I was lucky though - I wasn't on the streets, but as I was living in a women's hostel, with no fixed address, this put me under the 'homeless' banner.

I have always been very aware of how differently my life could have turned out, and try and chat to anyone who seems to be sleeping on the streets, especially as a lot of them have dogs. What is shocking is how easy it is to actually become homeless. An article in The Guardian talks about people being two paychecks away from living on the streets - these are people with a good income and a normal homelife.

So back to my initial question - should you work for free?

Personally I think if it's your considered choice, and it aligns with your values, absolutely you should. I've done dozens and dozens of free shoots just because I've really wanted too.

Knowing Amber's Pawesome range is helping the charity home people with dogs is just incredible as it is, but Amber's cause goes much much deeper than homelessness on it's own - I encourage you to go and check out her story for yourself as it's truly inspiring (I'll pop links in the comments).

And so doing this shoot for free wasn't really altruistic because it was a joy, it made me feel great doing it & meeting Amber, Chris & Ruby was just the icing on the cake.

Have you worked for free just because you wanted to? I'd love to know!

My mind was a bit blown! Having 40 minutes with the amazing Heather Kendall Lahtinen unlocked a money block around selling which I have always had, but I've never been able to figure out why.

Part of my ongoing self development means I always reflect on what I do and why - so it was a massive relief to understand this one.

What a day!

Edition Dog Live have done a great job again this year, it was pure joy to photograph the event because the love of dogs from both the exhibitors and the visitors was obvious.

I had countless puppy cuddles, chatted dog, caught up with clients & friends. A long journey home tomorrow, but well worth the trip!

Pet brands - would you love to elevate your smart photo photography for your products and services?

I'm going to be doing a series which teaches you some simple photography and camera phone tricks which will help you.

First up something which doesn't get talked about much, but it's a really effective & simple technique for helping draw the eye to a specific subject - layering.

All this means is when you are taking your photo, have foreground & background interest and your subject sandwiched between them.

This doesn't have to just be products either - if you are eg a groomer and want to take photo's of someone doing a cut, take a few steps back and add some of your environment to the foreground and details of the room in the background.

For the background, try and make sure it's further in the distance so it doesn't feel cluttered, and you can really tell what you want the focus to be.

Is this something you'll try? Have you already been doing it? This can work for pet portraits too!

These haven't launched yet but I get giddy every time I see how a client has used images to their full potential!

I loved this shoot because Bionic has a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm about how to enrich dogs lives with toys that last, and that is infectious. The icing on the cake though is the dog models had a great time on the shoot, which meant so did I.

This reel took an embarrassingly long time!

One of the things I'm often asked by clients is if I do video. So I've started to learn, but rather than do commercial style, I'm starting with UGC (user generated content) reels.

So this is the sort of thing you might see pop up on ads, or via brand ambassadors and it's blowing my mind.

I'm doing an intensive course by and I honestly had no idea how much work goes into a short video.

I'm building a portfolio and have completed one reel for a client which has now got close to 10k views for a very very niche product which is great! I know without doing the research I would never have put something like that together.

I'm testing out a few more and make sure they work, and I'm hoping to do the same sort of thing but with other dogs and people to give a bit of variety, but man oh man I have SO much respect for anyone who does great video content!

Wish me luck 😂🤞🏻

Do you love LinkedIn or is it something you feel you need to do? Or just not on it at all?

I think LinkedIn might be my favourite place to hang out 😂

Not only are there a huge amount of incredible and inspiring pet brands, I get to see cool new products and services emerge within the pet industry which I might have missed elsewhere.

When I became a dog owner, I had never idea just how much everything dog related would take over my life - researching the best foods, treats, toys, costs, collars, beds - which is probably why I love my job so much!

What's the photo got to do with this? WCF posted about these training treats on LinkedIn and they are a local brand so of course I wanted to give them a try! Small, natural training treats in a big bag - yes please!
