❗A quick reminder to all veterinary staff❗
As we head deeper into fungi season, we are currently experiencing a high volume of daily calls regarding mushroom ingestions.
There are more than 4000 species of fungi in the UK. While the majority cause only mild signs, certain species can lead to severe complications such as hepatic and renal failure, coagulopathy, convulsions and even death. In order to ensure an accurate identification is achieved, we work closely with a mycologist who can analyse images to ensure that the treatment advice is tailored specifically for the animal.
So what do we recommend you do if you take a call about an animal that has recently ingested a mushroom?
🍄 If within 2 hours AND/OR the patient is symptomatic, they must be seen. Please do not recommend Animal PoisonLine for these patients.
🍄 If possible, ask the owner to take a picture of the mushroom before picking it to bring in with the pet. Ensure the mushroom is picked as close to the bottom of the base as possible.
🍄 Call VPIS for treatment advice. We will be able to advise you on the best course of action and begin the identification process.
☎️ Please contact VPIS on 0207 3055 055 if you require treatment advice and identification for a case.
