❗A quick reminder to all veterinary staff❗

As we head deeper into fungi season, we are currently experiencing a high volume of daily calls regarding mushroom ingestions.

There are more than 4000 species of fungi in the UK. While the majority cause only mild signs, certain species can lead to severe complications such as hepatic and renal failure, coagulopathy, convulsions and even death. In order to ensure an accurate identification is achieved, we work closely with a mycologist who can analyse images to ensure that the treatment advice is tailored specifically for the animal.

So what do we recommend you do if you take a call about an animal that has recently ingested a mushroom?
🍄 If within 2 hours AND/OR the patient is symptomatic, they must be seen. Please do not recommend Animal PoisonLine for these patients.
🍄 If possible, ask the owner to take a picture of the mushroom before picking it to bring in with the pet. Ensure the mushroom is picked as close to the bottom of the base as possible.
🍄 Call VPIS for treatment advice. We will be able to advise you on the best course of action and begin the identification process.

☎️ Please contact VPIS on 0207 3055 055 if you require treatment advice and identification for a case.

These novelty items are readily available and often chewed/ingested by animals around Halloween and Guy Fawkes’ night. They consist of polyethylene tubing filled with a liquid mixture that gives off a light of various colours. There are normally two components to the mixture, a luminescer (mostly dibutyl phthalate), and an activator. The chemicals are of low toxicity, and the quantity ingested is usually small due to the unpleasant taste. As a result, systemic effects are not reported from accidental exposure to these types of products. The chemicals are irritant and cause discomfort, and the clinical features reflect this; typically, hypersalivation and foaming/frothing of the mouth is seen with immediate onset with possible hyperactivity and aggressive behaviour. Splashes in the eye will cause irritation.

Washing the mouth out or giving a treat to take the taste away is usually all that is required. Irrigation of the eye may be needed for ocular exposure.

In all cases reported to the VPIS where follow up data has been returned, all animals had uneventful recoveries.

⚠️We are commonly called about animals who have been intentionally given ibuprofen by their owners who are completely unaware of the dangers it may pose - we hope this post highlights those risks⚠️

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is commonly used in people for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with aches and pains, headache, cramps and for the relief of mild fever.

Dogs are particularly sensitive to the effects of ibuprofen, although other animals can be just as affected too. Ibuprofen can affect the gastrointestinal tract and the kidneys and can cause neurological signs and liver damage too dependent on the dose. The clinical signs of ibuprofen poisoning can include:

❗Vomiting (may be bloody)
❗Diarrhoea (may be bloody)
❗Black, tarry stools
❗Abdominal pain
❗Lethargy
❗Weakness
❗Tremors
❗Seizures

📞If you suspect your pet has been exposed to ibuprofen, call the Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 for advice. Please ensure you have an up to date weight for your pet. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 305 5055.

‘Mystery’ dog vomiting bug cases prompt veterinary advice."

The BVA (British Veterinary Association) has issued a statement following reports of a spike in the number of dogs suffering gastroenteritis like symptoms in a number of different areas around the UK.

No specific cause has yet been identified, and for many vomiting and / or diarrhoea appears to be mild. More severely affected pets however, may need hospitalisation and intravenous fluids.

If your dog starts to show signs, contact your vet for advice. It's also important to provide supportive home care as soon as possible, to help prevent dehydration and hasten a return to full health. This can be done as follows:

1. Give 2-3 drops of Stomach and Bowel Support hourly during the day until all vomiting has stopped. Then reduce to 4 times daily until normal stools are being passed once more. This remedy is safe to use alongside any medication prescribed by a vet.

2. Withhold food for at least 24 hours if vomiting is a feature. If diarrhoea is present, feeding lightly cooked lean meats (minced chicken, turkey, lamb, for example) plus boiled egg for a few days often helps settle the digestive system down. Normal food can then be gradually reintroduced, once it is clear all is well.

3. Give small drinks hourly if possible, using a syringe if necessary. A good homemade electrolyte solution is as follows:

1/2 (half) litre of boiled water
1 teaspoon of Manuka honey
1/4 (a quarter) teaspoon of salt

Stir the Manuka honey and salt into the boiled water, and allow to cool to lukewarm before using. If your dog is happy to be handled around the mouth, and to accept oral fluids, give 1/2 (half) to 1ml per kg every 2 hours. For a 10kg dog this would be 5 to 10ml. For the average 20kg dog, it would be 10 to 20ml. If any of this is brought back, the amount should be reduced until it is being kept down.

4. Keep warm and quiet.

5. Ensure your pet remains isolated until fully back to normal, to avoid spreading the infection to other pets,

NOTE

If antibiotics are prescribed for any reason, give The DIGESTION supplement too once they have finished, to help restore a healthy gut microbiome.

Hi folks, I’d just like to give you all an update as to where we are with opening.

It’s a bit of long one so you might want to grab a cuppa.

As a groomer we’re not on the list of businesses that must close, but are on the ones that fall under animal welfare. So essentially we can stay open, however only for animal welfare not aesthetics. It’s been difficult trying to get clarity as to what is deemed welfare, can we do regular grooms to prevent matting, nails becoming too long etc. Well many emails, phone calls, mixed messages later, we’ve been told ( up to now )absolutely not . We cannot open for our regular maintenance grooms, it can only be when the dogs welfare is at risk or at the point of becoming at risk, not a preventative groom. If we do, us as a business and you as a customer risk being fined. We must also keep photographic evidence of the grooms to prove it was essential. Our insurers will only cover us if we follow the rules of our councils, so essentially our insurance could be void if we don’t adhere to the rules exactly.
The reason they have taken this stance is to limit the amount of travelling the public are doing. So that people are only leaving their homes for something that is essential. We’ve been told all along, stay home protect the NHS and we all must do our bit.
We won’t let your pups suffer, you can always contact us if you have any concerns and we’ll do our best to help. Hopefully this lockdown won’t go on as the long as the 1st one, but if it does rest assured we’ll step in and do any welfare grooms needed.
We’d like to thank you all for your support over the last difficult year, it really means a lot to have such lovely customers and we’ll hopefully see you all soon

Take care

A groomers poem

Our tables are empty
Our salon is bare
Our scissors are longing
To once again cut fur

Our clippers are standing
On the shelf all alone
Our towels are folded
All dry as a bone

Our dryers are poised
Ready for action
Waiting for their moment
To create an attraction

Our brushes are hidden
Away In their drawers
They carnt wait to come out
To work some more

Your dogs look a mess
Their hair is still growing
But little do we mind
Just to see them we
Will be glowing

Carnt wait to be back
To clip clip away
To make dogs beautiful
And forget these days

We miss our "dogs"
And their humans too
Be gone of this virus
We carnt wait to see u!

FROM THE VETERINARY POISONS BUREAU....

We have been made aware of a post circulating on Facebook stating that hand sanitisers contain Ethylene Glycol (which is found in antifreeze and is potentially toxic when even a small amount is ingested). This post recommends that you should avoid letting your pets lick your hands if you've used hand sanitiser. This is NOT TRUE.

Hand sanitisers have a high alcohol (ethanol) content and can be harmful if ingested in a large quantity (i.e. the contents of a bottle) but if it is licked from your skin, it will NOT harm your pet.

Help needed - is there anyone with a canoe willing and able to scour the river for us (only if conditions allow)? Every option has to be considered and although we’ve no information to say what’s happened either way - and Polly was not seen entering the water, we need to rule this out
The water level was very high the day she went missing but it’s been very low since meaning a canoe wasn’t viable. However it’s risen again and if anyone is able to do this Pollys family would much appreciate it.
If you can, please message me here or call the number on the poster. Please only call if you can help or have seen Polly so we can keep the line free .. thank you SO much. X
