πŸ’œ Fergusson πŸ’œ

Fergusson was referred to me after his owners observed some behavioural changes and a noticeable disliking to wooden flooring. Following a comprehensive assessment, various areas of pain, weakness, and restriction were identified, especially throughout his iliopsoas muscles, and subsequently treated. He underwent regular physiotherapy, which included laser therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, manual therapies and therapeutic exercises. I am happy to report that Fergusson is now back to his lively self, with no behavioural changes and is much happier on wooden flooring! πŸ₯³

Well done Fergusson 🌟

πŸ’œ Blu πŸ’œ

Blu has monthly physiotherapy appointments after his hindlimb amputation. With only three legs, his gait pattern and posture have had to adapt, putting additional strain on soft tissue structures as well. Physiotherapy helps him manage the change, addressing compensations, reducing pain, improving balance, and enhancing overall strength🐾. He also comes in with a different themed bow tie each month πŸŽ€

Did you know?
A four legged dog supports approximately 60% of their weight on their forelimbs and 40% on their hindlimbs. After a hindlimb amputation, it shifts to approximately 74% on the forelimbs and 26% on the remaining hindlimb πŸ’œ

🌟 Coco🌟

I’ve been working with her for a few weeks now after she became non-weight beating on her right hindlimb. She was diagnosed with bilateral patella luxation, stifle joint effusion and osteoarthritis. Coco is receiving weekly physiotherapy and laser sessions with the aim of reducing pain, encouraging weight bearing and range of motion, reducing effusion and strengthening 🐾πŸ’ͺ🏻

πŸ’œ Bodza πŸ’œ

In 2022, she started physiotherapy with me after a diagnosis of degenerative lumbosacral stenosis. She was in pain, hesitant to run, jump, or climb stairs, and experienced hindlimb lameness, among other challenges.

After regular physiotherapy sessions and with dedication from her mum Ildiko, Bodza is now pain-free and back to jumping and being her lively self without needing any pain medications. Over the past few years, she has continued to benefit from monthly maintenance physiotherapy sessions to monitor her condition and ensure she stays happy and healthy. 🐾πŸ’ͺ

Well done Bodza and Ildiko πŸ’œ

πŸ’œ Scooby πŸ’œ

Little Scooby has unfortunately not had the easiest time. He was referred to me by Uxbridge Vets after a femoral head arthroplasty (removal of the ball of the femoral head), and then he had an intervertebral disc herniation.

Scooby received regular physiotherapy, laser therapy, and therapeutic ultrasound treatments, along with a personalised home exercise program that his mum, Sarah, has been diligently working on.

Scooby has made brilliant progress and continues to have physiotherapy sessions twice a month for maintenance. Last week, he even managed a 6-mile coastal path walk with his sister and mum.

I am so proud of Scooby and Sarah. Well done! πŸ’œ

🚫🎾 Why Ball Throwers Can Be Harmful for Dogs 🚫🎾

As a veterinary physiotherapist, I see a large number of injuries caused by ball throwers. While they might seem like a fun and convenient way to play with your dog, they can lead to serious issues such as muscle strains, joint problems, and even more severe injuries due to the high-impact and repetitive nature of the activity.

🐾 There are safer, low-impact exercises that offer excellent physical and mental stimulation for your dog. If you're interested in learning more, feel free to message me. I can recommend activities tailored to your dog's specific needs.

🎾 If You Absolutely Must Play with a Ball:

First, please get rid of your ball thrower.
Warm-Up & Cool-Down: Just like humans, dogs benefit from a good warm-up and cool-down routine, which should be at least 15-20 minutes.
Limit Sessions: Keep playtime short to prevent overexertion.
Rolling the Ball: Roll the ball a few times rather than throwing it long distances.

Your dog's health and happiness are worth more than a few extra fetches. Play smart, stay injury-free! 🐢❀️

Well done Scooby and Sarah! πŸ’œ

The results of the April Bravery Awards are in .... Congratulations to Barney Tattersall and Scooby Beckwith!
Both boys have been absolutely brilliant recently receiving their treatment, like real troopers and have been exceptional patients.
Our boy Barney presented to us a couple of weeks ago with a swelling under his eye following an injury. Barney had knocked the side of his head on the banister at home and in a matter of days the swelling appeared.
Following x-ray's to check for structural damage and a fine needle aspirate, our Imagyst scanner determined that the swelling was in fact a lipoma - a fatty lump which may have formed as a result of his accident days before. They are usually slow growing but can appear more rapidly following trauma.
Barney had his surgery last week and we saw him today for his final check. Both Barney, his Mum and Wispa are very pleased with his progress.

Then we have our poor little Scooby, he was first seen at Uxbridge Vets 2 years ago as a second opinion case. He had presented with lethargy, shaking and unable to stand or get up onto the sofa. Scooby's case was rather complex, involving a referral for an MRI, lots of rest, pain relief - the works. Veterinary surgeon Faye, performed a femoral head arthroplasty ( which is when we surgically removed the ball of the femoral head) to relieve the pain and discomfort from Scooby's terribly arthritic hip.
The road to recovery was long....very long. Scooby received multiple laser therapy sessions with us and also a personalised rehabilitation programme at Squirrels Chase Veterinary Physiotherapy by Beth.
Scooby has come such a long way and is now pain free and is currently not in any long term medication, which is fantastic news - a special mention to his Mum Sarah, who has nursed him all this time.

Well done to both our winners, I think you'll all agree that they are most deserving of their awards.

Dolly visited us for laser therapy following an unfortunate encounter with another dog. We're pleased to share that after just five laser sessions, her wound has healed remarkably well and is barely noticeable now.

I had the pleasure of meeting gorgeous Mia the border terrier for her initial physiotherapy consultation a few weeks ago. She presented with a history of dog aggression, suspected to be associated with underlying pain. Following a comprehensive assessment, various areas of pain, weakness, and restriction were identified and subsequently addressed. Mia now attends weekly physiotherapy sessions, encompassing a tailored regimen of manual therapies, laser therapy, and therapeutic exercises. I am delighted to report a notable improvement in Mia's aggression since commencing treatment.

Dog aggression isn't always what it seems. Sometimes, it's a silent cry for help, a way of expressing discomfort or pain.
If your furry friend shows signs of aggression, consider looking beyond behavior and exploring the possibility of pain.

It's easy to think our dogs only express pain through vocalisations, but that's not the case! 🐢Pain can manifest in a large variety of ways. Some signs to keep an eye out for include decreased activity, changes in appetite, excessive licking or chewing, holding a leg up, behaviour changes and even unusual aggression or withdrawal. Remember, our pets can't always tell us when they're hurting, so let's stay vigilant and give them the care they deserve!

If your dog is showing any of these signs or you are interested in laser therapy, please contact me to book an appointment 🐾
