Reposting this clip for the benefit of folk in the current KC Bronze Award class . Remember to practise this exercise daily in the run up to the assessment on 25th Jan . Also remember the three 'D's Distance, Duration and Distraction - don't overwhelm your dog . Build it up slowly by concentrating on one 'D' at a time.

❌AT CHRISTMAS YOUR DOG DOESN’T HAVE TO:

🧑‍🎄 Visit Santa at the garden centre

🎄 Be around your visitors

🎅🏽 Go to other peoples houses

🎄 Go to see the Christmas lights switch on

🍺 Go to the busy pub on Christmas Eve

If they are anxious or get worried about people, dogs or busy places or if they just don’t like doing these things. It’s not a fault if they don’t like doing these things, many dogs don’t enjoy ‘human activities’ like this (some do, I have one that loves all of it and two that would be 🫤 ).

✅ Instead they may prefer to:

🚪 Be in their safe space (see upcoming post on this), a quiet room they like being in with a dog gate on the doorway when you have a house full of people who may scare them

🐕 Have an extra trip to a freedom field on Christmas morning and some extra enrichment at home while you go and visit family for a few hours if they’d find it stressful to come with you

🐶 A meet up with a dog or human friend at a place they like rather than a trip to the heaving pub on Christmas Eve

🦴 A trip to a dog enrichment centre or a 121 in an activity they love (scent work, mantrailing etc) rather than an outing to see the Christmas lights switched on

🍖 Some dog safe Christmas biscuits you’ve made them rather than dressing up in a dog Santa outfit

Loads of these Christmas ‘traditions’ that we enjoy are not enjoyed by our dogs, especially if they are anxious or more sensitive. Even the most robust dog may tolerate these activities rather than love them.

Please be mindful of your dogs wants and needs and don’t put them into situations they find stressful just because we want them to be part of Christmas. It’s your Christmas, not your dogs, they really won’t mind not being included in everything you do ❤️

Three places filled and three vacancies on this Kennel Club accredited dog training course . Ideal if you feel having an accredited course is necessary for your chosen path. Great for developing working canine- human partnerships were UK accreditation is useful - eg owner trained assistance dogs and therapy dogs . Interested? Caring for Dogs & Building Solid Canine - Human Partnerships

Do you need help training your dog , safe and secure boarding for your dog in a loving family home environment when you go on holiday or help with walking your dog when you are at work? Then look no further !

Green Wellies Gareth (me!) offers a professional dog walking and licensed home boarding service in South Anglesey and I’m also a qualified dog training instructor. I am dedicated to finding ways to help each owner have a rewarding happy relationship with their dog and peace of mind when they go away knowing that their dog will be in safe hands.

I am interested in all aspects of canine welfare and behaviour and see dogs as being cherished companions and family members. I like nothing better than to meet other dog owners and share knowledge of our relationships with them and best methods of caring for our dogs. Knowledge shared can only strengthen the well-established and enduring bonds that exist between dogs and humans.

I have over 25 years experience in assistance dog handling and training and I’m a recognised volunteer assistance dog trainer with the disability charity Dog A.I.D. Previously I was employed as a partnership support officer by Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and as an animal nutrition research scientist at Aberystwyth University. Also I’m affiliated to the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, Association of Pet Dog Trainers and Kennel Club Academy having passed their instructor and advanced instructor courses and gaining certificates. A member of the British Society of Animal Scientists and have published several scientific papers on animal nutrition with my post MPhil studies concentrating on optimal nutrition of companion dogs from puppies to seniors.
