So here we are after seven and a half years of walking dogs on Ynys Mon in all weathers . This afternoon saw my last commercial dog walk . My dogs; Derfel , Ike and Perci have walked alongside many hundreds of other dogs in this time and I’d like to thank them for their patience and tolerance.

I’m closing the dog walking and boarding business now but hope to continue the dog training classes as a weekend hobby and assistance dog training too.

A huge thank you to my customers and their dogs for their support and custom over the years, especially during the pandemic . Also thank you to Helen and Ifan for sharing our home with so many dogs since I started Green Wellies Gareth and all the trials and tribulations that went with it. Diolch yn fawr iawn! ###

Many congratulations to Ffion and Vera who passed the Dog A.I.D. Level 3 assessment in Llandudno yesterday and are now an ADUK registered assistance dog - human working partnership. It is so lovely to see the bond they have .

It was fabulous to meet the new puppy class intake on Wednesday in Gaerwen. They all looked cute and worked fantastically hard , as evidenced by the little chap in the picture! He was utterly exhausted when he arrived back home! 🥰

Remember to top up your birdbath or put a shallow pan out . Let's keep these guys hydrated during this dry spell.

(don't let your dog drink from the same container - salmonella , campylobacter, bird flu etc etc).

In the last few days we have had a number of fledgling birds brought into the practice. Some of these have been the worse for wear due to heat and dehydration. Please consider putting out some shallow bowls of water your garden birds and follow the RSPB advice if you find a baby bird.

Some pics from today’s walk in Newborough Forest on a beautiful sunny afternoon. A member of the public asked if they are all mine and what are they called. ‘Not all mine , just two are ‘ and I carefully explained that they are called ‘dogs’ or ‘Canis familiaris’ for the scientifically minded.

At last! The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have published a summary of the responses to their assistance dogs and flying consultation that they conducted in 2019. I'm pleased to see my comments about hate crime and disability related harassment have been noted. It is a long read without conclusive recommendations but of interest to those of us owner-trainers with ADs who fly or intend to fly.

Clever Hans (German: der Kluge Hans; c. 1895 – c. 1916) was a horse that was claimed to have performed arithmetic and other intellectual tasks. After a formal investigation in 1907, psychologist Oskar Pfungst demonstrated that the horse was not actually performing these mental tasks, but was watching the reactions of his trainer. He discovered this artifact in the research methodology, wherein the horse was responding directly to involuntary cues in the body language of the human trainer, who was entirely unaware that he was providing such cues.

Medical Detection Squirrel being trained by myself in Newborough Forest in collaboration with Pets as Therapy and Natural Resources Wales . The squirrels' highly efficient olfactory organs can detect subtle changes in the body odour of their handlers and results in a shrill warning if the handlers are slowly going nuts. Ideally suited for clients with emotional support needs who live in high rise buildings or tree houses.

Bless Robbie Coltrane but did Hagrid ever have to sweep up when Fluffy was having his autumn moult? From his dog’s name I get the feeling that the three-headed Fluffy was double coated and that must have kept Hagrid on his toes. Meanwhile in my house it feels like the vacuum cleaner is glued to my arm at the moment as all four Labradors here are going through their six week biannual moult. Read on for the science behind this. The dogs’ summer coats have been in a state of dormancy (Telogen phase) but the shortening daylight hours and cooler autumn temperatures have influenced the production of a hormone called melatonin in the pineal gland of their brains. Melatonin is made from the chemical melanin which in turn is synthesised from sunlight hence the link between moulting and the length of the photoperiod. Melatonin activates the cell matrix in the hair follicles in the dog’s epidermis. New hairs start to grow (anagen phase) to prepare for the heavier winter coat. The new hairs displace the older hair of the summer coat, and these old hairs are then shed around the house where they gather as annoying furballs. The autumn moult is much more evident in dogs that are housed outside in kennels though. Dogs inside the home are exposed to electric lighting which means that hair shedding can be artificially manipulated to some extent. So now I need to think about economics and the cost-of-living crisis. Instead of vacuuming all the time would it be cheaper to leave the lights burning for longer?

*UPDATE - APRIL PUPPY CLASS IS FULLY SUBSCRIBED. A NEW CLASS STARTS 6th JUNE* A new KC Puppy Foundation training course starts on 20th April , 6-6:50pm at Hooton's Pick Your Own near Brynsiencyn. A six week course covering basic positions, handling and grooming, socialisation, returning when called, food manners and more. Cost: £72. Maximum of six pups with handlers in the class . Congratulations to the four dogs and handlers who have passed their Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training Gold Award today. It was an absolutely fabulous morning for everyone involved . Thank you to Margaret Booth for carrying out the assessment and providing the facilities. These are the last group of dogs and handlers to pass their assessments at Pen Yr Orsedd as Margaret and Mike are retiring to new pastures. On behalf of the hundreds and hundreds of dogs and handlers who have trained at K9 Concerns Dog Training Club since Margaret started the classes 18 years ago , we all express our sincere gratitude and appreciation . Thank you Margaret & Mike!

Looking forward to starting a new puppy class at K9 Concerns Dog Training Club next week. This is a 5 week course that leads to the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme - Puppy Foundation Award. Cost is £40 and will be outside for five handlers with puppies . Green Wellies Gareth (me!) offers a professional dog walking and licensed home boarding service in South Anglesey and I’m also a qualified dog training instructor. I am dedicated to finding ways to help each owner have a rewarding happy relationship with their dog and peace of mind when they go away knowing that their dog will be in safe hands.

I am interested in all aspects of canine welfare and behaviour and see dogs as being cherished companions and family members. I like nothing better than to meet other dog owners and share knowledge of our relationships with them and best methods of caring for our dogs. Knowledge shared can only strengthen the well-established and enduring bonds that exist between dogs and humans.

I have over 25 years experience in assistance dog handling and training and I’m a recognised volunteer assistance dog trainer with the disability charity Dog A.I.D. Previously I was employed as a partnership support officer by Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and as an animal nutrition research scientist at Aberystwyth University. Also I’m affiliated to the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, Association of Pet Dog Trainers and Kennel Club Academy having passed their instructor and advanced instructor courses and gaining certificates. A member of the British Society of Animal Scientists and have published several scientific papers on animal nutrition with my post MPhil studies concentrating on optimal nutrition of companion dogs from puppies to seniors.
