☔️ MUD FEVER ☔️

As the weather gets wet, cold and dark, the the risk of mud fever increases.

But what is Mud Fever?

It is characterised by a bacterial, fungal, or combined infection of the skin of the lower limb that creates:

💉Thickening, reddening and inflamation of the skin
💉Serum oozing
💉Thick crusts (like scabbing)
💉Lameness
💉In more extensive cases cellulitis can occur

This is the same condition (known as dermatophilosis) as rain scald. However, on limbs it can be aggravated more easily by bacteria from mud and the environment.

Causes of mud fever:

🌡Leg mites
🌡Wet conditions
🌡Sand/abrasive surfaces
🌡Immune mediated conditions specifically affecting the white regions of the limbs
🌡Underlying disease causing immuno-compromise (eg. cushings)

Tips to manage:

💙Clean the legs with 50/50 hibiscrub and water, leave for 5 minutes, attempt to remove scabs, and wash once every 2-3 days. Dry thoroughly.
💙Clipping legs for the feathered horses
💙Antibacterial cream such as flamazine may be applied after cleaning the legs or as a barrier cream daily.

Prevention:

💚Leaving mud to dry and brushing off limbs
💚Sudocre, baby oil or pig oil applied as a barrier (onto dry legs)
💚Paddock management such as hard standing/stone/rollering to prevent poaching of land

If there is no improvement with first line treatment, please feel free to contact the office for a vet appointment. We can offer systemic steroids, antibiotics, mite treatment, or topical treatments to help your horse along the way.

🎂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US - WE ARE ONE! 🎂

Today we are celebrating a full year of hard work, dedication and growth! Thank you to our wonderful clients and fantastic team who have made this milestone possible.

In just one year we have grown from two individuals to a strong team of NINE!

We have three incredibly dedicated office staff who work tirelessly to answer your enquiries and get you booked in for appointments, plus a vet tech who is constantly putting the care of her patients first and goes above and beyond to support the vets. Our team of five vets cover interests in orthopaedics, sport horse medicine, reproduction and general practice with a combined experience of 60 years between them.

Without the partnership of our referring specialists we wouldn't be able to offer the best possible care for our patients. For their support and guidance we are very grateful - below to list just a few:

- James Roxburgh BVM&S Cert AVP(ED) PG(SVS) MRCVS
- Rainbow Equine Hospital
- Oakham Equine Hospital
- Chine House Equine Hospital
- Rossdales Equine Hospital
- Bryan O'Meara MVB, MVM, CertES(Orth), Dipl.ECVS, MRCVS
- Mark Bowen BVetMed PhD DipECEIM FRCVS

Lastly, we extend our thanks to Mr Bowen for entrusting us with the founding opportunity and his continued hard work and dedication to the practice.

Here's to many more years of growth, success and shared memories with our incredible clients - we wouldn't be here without you, so thank you for being a part of our journey!

Best Wishes,

Rowan and Harriet

💥 Fireworks 💥

Bonfire night is fast approaching, and whilst this is a time for celebration, firework displays and cinder toffee, it is also a notoriously tricky time for horse and animal owners alike.

Therefore, we feel it is imperative that we prepare our lovely clients and their equines.

Some of our top tips for keeping your horse safe include:

💥 Keeping the horses stabled at night a few days before to acclimatise (with companion ideally) for the weekends before and after the 5th November, as celebrations can extend throughout the week.

💥 If they are stabled, remove haynets and feed from the floor if possible, or if thats not possible tie nets up high at the opposite side to the door to avoid injuries.

💥 Keep an eye on the local events near you, to prepare for busier/louder nights

💥 We offer oral sedatives (Sedalin and Domosedan gel) which can be administered by mouth before the suspected display. If you do require this, please give the office a ring, and if we have seen the horse within 6 months, we can provide the sedative to you. If we have not seen the animal in 6 months, they will require a Prescription check which can be facilitated on one of our free zone days.

💥 Keep low grade noise such as the radio to desensitise the horses to noises.

💥 Avoid changes to management and feeding plans, or if this is necessary, please do so gradually.

💥 As always we will be on call for emergencies or available for advice

Laws about firework use:
Fireworks must not be let off between 11pm and 7am, except for 5th November, when cut off is 12:00am, New years eve, Chinese New year, and Diwali, when the mandatory stop time is 1am. (Government website, 2024) (BHS, 2024).

If you have any questions regarding preparation before Bonfire night, please do not hesitate to contact the office!

🌳Atypical Myopathy – Sycamore Poisoning 🌳

Unfortunately, last weekend we saw our first case of Sycamore poisoning and as we begin to enter the winter months and the grass disappears it is important to be vigilant and on the look out for seeds within your paddocks.

Sycamore poisoning is a severe and often fatal disease caused by a toxin called Hypoglycin A. The toxin is found in sycamore seeds, leaves and saplings.

Symptoms to be on the look out for:

❗Generalised weakness, struggling to walk.
❗Muscle Tremors
❗Lying down
❗Colicing but maintaining an appetite
❗Brown or dark red urine

So what can you do?

- Provide supplementary forage in the field
- Clear fallen seeds
- Check adjacent fields for seeds as they can travel some distance.

With the recent weather, please make sure to check your horse’s paddock. It is fatal in around three quarters of affected cases!

Let’s keep our horses healthy and happy this season!

❗Impaction season ❗

…but what does this mean? An impaction is a type of colic in equines which results in the back-up of food material into a large area occupying one of the bends within the horses intestines - primarily the pelvic flexure!

Why are we at risk?

🐴 As the nights draw in and the fields become sodden. We reach for our rugs, deep straw bedding, and extended periods of stable-time.

🐴 If a horse’s routine changes drastically, it can upset the bacteria within the gut. This bacteria breaks down the food that they ingest. They also have incredibly long intestines, (around 30 metres long!), so small changes take a long time to move through the body.

🐴 If horses change from grass fed to hay rapidly, they can struggle to digest, leading to increased pressure on the intestines and impactions can develop.

🐴 Horses aren’t moving! When a horse is stabled, they are not naturally thermoregulating, and walking, which stimulates the gut to move and digest the food. Therefore the gut slows down and can back up. Take them for walks in hand, hacks, or continue to work the horses if turnout is not possible.

🐴 Reduced water intake - as the temperatures decreases, and ice forms over the water, horses are less likely to drink. So always check your water and smash the ice, and consider placing cut apple in the water to reduce the risk of icing over.
To increase water intake further, you could add in some electrolytes (either from us as a Hestevard Effalyte), or a regulated well balanced diet in the form of a recovery mash in warm water on colder days.

Signs to watch for:

❗Flank Watching
❗Agitated, belly kicking
❗‘grimace face’ with ears back or lip curling
❗Laying down/rolling
❗Inappetence
❗Tucked up appearance
❗Reduced droppings

Treatment can include: Fluids via Naso-gastric tube (tube into the stomach), pain relief, smooth muscle relaxants into the vein, re**al examinations and more.
The vet will continue to follow your horse, and provide tailored treatment plans and management changes.

If you suspect any of these symptoms, please call the office and we can book you an appointment. As ever if you need any advice as horses make their way back to their stables this winter please dont hesitate to give us a call on - 01652 240 071

Did you know that vets have to undertake 35 hours of continued professional development (CPD) each year? This ensures their eligibility to remain a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

Today, Rowan attended and enjoyed the Sport Horse CPD event which was held locally at Osberton Horse Trials and hosted by the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) and BEDE Events.

Care of the Sport Horse has become increasingly important as we demonstrate our commitment to both the wellbeing and welfare of these wonderful creatures.
It is essential that we showcase the positive outlook for the social licensing aspects of using horses in sport.
Practicing evidence-based sports medicine is at the heart of our practice ethos and is best achieved through professional collaboration.

🏅 🐎 Burghley Round-Up 🐎 🏅

What an incredible weekend of horsemanship culminating in a win for Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo - our sincere congratulations to this unstoppable duo!

A great team of veterinary surgeons are on hand at Burghley Horse Trials and ensure that the veterinary needs of these fabulous creatures are exceeded.

Our vet, Dr Rowan Wright has been apart of this veterinary team for 5 years and is based at the finish of the cross country course.

Rowan’s specific role sees horses home safely and the efficient cooling and recovery process, whilst also being quickly accessible to the first and last fences. Some might say it’s the perfect job given that Rowan’s caseload at home is rather sport horse biased!

Now, whilst no one managed to ‘spot the doc’ on camera we did have one verifiable wave… Lisa Waterworth - YOU are our winner!
