As Christmas comes ever nearer and stress from last minute gift and Christmas dinner shopping climbs higher, we would like to reassure all pet owners of Galedin Veterinary- Small Animal, Border Vets, and any other pets in the Borders this holiday season that you don't need to stress about care for your pets: E-vets will be here for all your emergency care needs!

While we hope we don't have to see you with a poorly pet over Christmas or New Year, if your pet does have an emergency, we will be here as usual with a dedicated vet and vet nurse on site and ready to help.

Galedin and Border Vets will be open as usual until 6pm on Christmas Eve + New Years Eve, at which point E-vets will take over care throughout the holidays until Galedin and Border Vets reopen at 8am on the 27th Dec + 3rd Jan.

Just phone your registered vet as usual if you need any emegency vet advice, and we will answer your call 😸

Do you know one of the most common causes of intestinal blockages in dogs that requires surgery? It's probably not what you think...

Find the answer below with tonight’s patient spotlight: Barra and the Dangers of Corn Cobs!

~
Meet Barra, a 2 year old cocker spaniel who came to Galedin Veterinary- Small Animal feeling a bit under the weather and being sick at the start of November. Initially nothing strange could be felt in her abdomen, but as the day went on, Barra quickly became dangerously dehydrated and weak. The team at E-vets continued the investigations to try and find what was making her so poorly. Initially xrays didn’t show anything indicating surgery was required, and she started to feel better with some IV fluids. But after a few hours, something firm and strange could be felt in her abdomen, and with another xray, we could see signs of gas buildup in her intestines - a possible indicator of a blockage. We still couldn’t see an actual cause of a blockage on xray, but all the signs pointed towards surgery being required.

Our vet Vicky operated, and sure enough that firm thing we could feel was a blockage in the small intestine. The cause? A corn cob!!! Vicky removed the offending vegetable, and after a couple more days of careful hospitalisation, Barra went home and is now back to full health, “tail wagging and back to turbo charge” according to her owner.
~

While corn itself is safe and non-toxic to dogs, a dog’s stomach is unable to digest the cob, so it can easily become lodged as the intestines become more narrow. Corn cobs can be especially tricky to diagnose as requiring surgery, as they often look the same as normal faecal material on xray. So please remember, as you enjoy your healthy meal with a side of corn on the cob, don’t give the leftover cob to your dog and make sure to keep the bin secure so your dog can’t steal it - it could be deadly!

⭐️our boy 🥰 Here is the link to the fundraiser for Pete/Rudi's medical care. We know this is hard a time of year for some, so we completely understand if donation isn't possible. But even if you don't have a spare penny available right now to help Rudi, a share to reach as far and wide as his original post would be just as helpful!

URGENT APPEAL - Help Rudi the Rescue Pup Shine Bright!

This festive season, a sweet dog we've named Rudi is in need of a Christmas miracle. Just like Santa’s famous reindeer, Rudolph, our Rudi was found feeling lost and alone after being injured near Kelso High School. He was likely struck by a vehicle, leaving him in pain and needing urgent care. Thankfully, the dedicated team at E-vets provided emergency treatment and pain relief, but despite their efforts, no owner has come forward to claim him.

Rudi's journey has led him to Borders Pet Rescue, where he’s safe and receiving love—but he needs YOUR help to truly get back on his paws. After X-rays revealed a broken leg, the amazing team at Galedin Veterinary Galashiels stepped in and performed surgery to mend his injury.

Like Rudolph, Rudi has faced his fair share of challenges. But with your support, he can light up the lives of a new family, just as Rudolph lights Santa’s way. With some much-needed TLC, rest, and medication, Rudi can regain his sparkle—and perhaps find a family to call his own.

This holiday season, we’re asking you to join Rudi’s reindeer crew and help us cover the costs of his veterinary treatment. Every donation, no matter how small, will help him on his way to recovery. Together, we can guide Rudi through this storm and ensure he has a bright and happy future.

Let’s make sure Rudi’s story doesn’t end with him feeling left out in the cold. Help him shine bright, just like Rudolph’s nose!

Donate today and give the gift of hope, healing, and happiness.

Thank you for helping Rudi sleigh his way to recovery! ✨🐾🎄

Excellent news everyone! Borders Pet Rescue to the rescue, they've taken on Pete's case! And in honour of winter, they've now given him an official name, "Rudi" after Rudolph the red nosed reindeer ❤️🦌

It's a bittersweet moment for everyone here at E-vets and Galedin Veterinary- Small Animal as we've all come to love having him around (especially our vet Vicky, if you can't tell by the smile on her face!), but he's off now to be spoiled rotten by more caring people until BPR finds him a new loving home.

We'll keep posting updates here on him, including once the fundraising link to cover his medical care has gone live, but go give Borders Pet Rescue a follow too for further updates about Pete/Rudi as well as many other fantastic pets needing a home!

More big steps for Pete today ⭐️Pete’s comfort levels have continued to improve throughout the day as the swelling and bruising has reduced on his fractured limb.

An update on our stray lurcher (who has now been dubbed 'Pete' after his surgeon by the staff):

Pete is recovering well from his surgery, and is now up on all 4 feet! (Though not yet too keen to walk outside, but who could blame him this week 🥶)

Meanwhile we've been in touch with a local rescue to organise ongoing care and likely a fundraiser to cover the costs of his surgery and medical care, so stay tuned for when that becomes official!

Thank you all again for your kind words and support for this guy. Also massive shout out to The Salmon Inn for the lovely bag of goodies dropped off for the team to enjoy 💓THANK YOU.

We would like to thank everyone for their concern and offered generosity for the stray lurcher that was brought into our clinic yesterday.

An update: He spent Sunday day and night being treated by our e-Vets team and spent it very comfortable and with lots of tail wags! He has a confirmed broken front leg but no signs of other serious injuries. He is currently undergoing surgery to repair his leg by the fantastic Galedin Veterinary- Small Animal team, and we will update everyone soon on his recovery.

Unfortunately no owner has come forward yet. If this continues to be the case, we will be in contact with local rescues to ensure this sweet boy has long term care planned!
